The inside of the battery case has to be plastic. If the batteries ever go into thermal runaway, they need to melt through the case to vent, so the case doesn't become a bomb.
@GoGeorge
@GoGeorge Жыл бұрын
i would really doubt that to be the case. some screws and silicone sealant is not going to create any kind of serious seal that a battery fire wouldn't melt away immediately. it would easily blow out a section welllllll before it explodes. it also has cable holes on the top and bottom that would act as vents.
@Roskellan
@Roskellan Жыл бұрын
@@GoGeorge No, he's right any attempt to contain, that is gases have to escape faster than they are building up (and in a fire they will build up ridiculously fast), will turn combustion into explosion. The solution is that plastic inner side to the battery box which offers no resistance under that heat or pressure. It's the gunpower burning on a piece of paper thing, just a flash and a lot of smoke. Contain it and you have made yourself a hand-grenade. Thought of another example, pre-ignition, pinking, detonation, in a petrol engine. When the gasses build up faster than the piston can get out of the way, instead of combustion you get detonation and blow the crowns out of your pistons.

@@Roskellan if thats the case then what difference would the plastic make? its still going to last much longer than the thin silicone seals around the edges and at the wire entrances allowing for rapid pressure build up if the silicone doesnt fail fast enough or the rubber around the wires

@@GoGeorgeI can't remember if it was WW or the Eevees teardown video that mentioned the back plastic plate was likely meant to melt and release heat in the event of a fire. If it were metal though, I imagine the plates are gonna fit pretty snuggly against one another and then screwed in keep them tight. The seals are there as an extra layer of protection against water intrusion, but if they're melted, would that give enough of a gap to vent the tremendous amount of heat/pressure a burning li-ion cell/cells put out in a short period of time? Not sure about that. I'd also assume the screws are metal and wouldn't melt so quickly; plus they could be farther away from the cell that starts on fire. Sure, the cable holes could be used to vent, assuming the holes are big enough, but the wires aren't going to melt instantly, so there may not be much of an air gap. If that plastic is thick enough to not almost instantly burn through at the temperatures li-ion cells burn at (doubtful), then it's also probably thick enough to avoid any real damage from impacts to the inside of the wheel and isn't a problem anyways.
@Roskellan
@Roskellan Жыл бұрын
@@GoGeorge Hi George, I think its a given that a plastic container would give before before detonation took place, entry points for cables etc are not enough I think. During the dam buster raids the bouncing bomb had enough power to rupture the Möhne and Edersee dams, this was only possible because the bombs sunk first. If they had gone off near the surface they would have done no damage at all, it was the water pressure, the water not willing to instantly get out of the way that caused so much damage to the structure. In a detonation the energy will go somewhere it will not be contained nor disperse through small openings.

Some notes: Handles are nylon, not metal. The nylon material can absorb small impacts and are designed to snap off in huge impacts so the force isn't transmitted to the rest of the wheel. The metal shell/chassis is a magnesium alloy. I also heard the inside of the battery cases are plastic to allow easier venting in the event of a thermal runaway, so they don't explode like the S22 batteries did. The High Speed mode shortens the lifespan of both your batteries and controller, so LeaperKim/Veteran doesn't recommend using it all the time.

eevee's brad & lukas explained that the interior shell is plastic as a design for good reason. imagine a fully enclosed explosive device wrapped in full metal, sounds like a grenade right? there needs somewhere for all that energy to escape in worse case scenarios. He's out and about making EUC videos (I put lasers on my Master by the way - cheap and fun), you do know it's Christmas in just over an hour right? Maybe Xmas comes another time in the States, its entirely possible. Anyway, Happy Xmas and New Year, look forward to watching your channel in 2023. If you didn't get your Xmas shopping done you will be in trouble, EUC videos don't count with loved ones :-) Magnesium, by-the-way, will combust, burns hot and is incredibly difficult to put out. If they get fires in these things they will be spectacular. The reason they use it is the same reason you get magnesium wheels, they are light and they are strong.

My personal no go line is a >30 kg wheel. Many athletic women are in the 60 kg range, so the wheel would be half their weight. This is not a problem at speed, but mounting a heavy wheel around obstacles and hazards is dicey. Shibby uses this suspension to the max, but do the rest of us need that much? How much suspension do you need for gravel roads and cobblestones, and to keep your quads from complaining too much while taking the buzzing out of your feet? Will we get active suspension like luxury cars? Perhaps our biggest obstacle with state legislatures is stopping distance. Cars are required to stop from 60 mph in 125 feet. Try stopping in 125 feet from 40 mph on a wheel! Mathematically, with a 120 kg (264 lb) total weight rider and wheel, starting at 40 mph (65 km/h) with the wheel able to absorb 2000 watts continuously during the stop, it takes 295 feet (90 meters), and that doesn't include reaction time or shifting your weight. .

They won't lower the price simply because the suspension alone, and if they did then the SherMax would become more obsolete causing less sells overall. So pretty sure the price won't drop anytime soon unfortunately, especially considering the popularity this wheel is going to have selling

I totally agree with you both, i was only stating that 4k and over is driving a lot out of an already small market! Not to many are going to consider 4k, and the ones that do, will pick the one with the best specs! And since the S doesn’t have that, the should set themselves apart buy selling at $3800 and make the max $3500!! But maxing out their profit margin, will keep sales minimalized

Unicycle industry and market went to wrong direction making getting modern EUC useless. EUC used to be compact relatively lite city vehicle, that is better than scooters in terms of size and weight, but still capable to provide good mileage and wheel big enough to ride in some comfort. Nova days EUC is pointless. It is super heavy to lift, it is big and cost a lot of money, takes hours to refill the battery. If you want something really fast and something that can go over hundred miles for some non logical reason - why wouldn't you just get a motorcycle instead?? EUC should be city friendly, not some highway speed demon with 150 miles range. So far I haven't seen EUC better that KS18XL in terms of practicality and everyday usage especially the trolley handle on that wheel - so comfortable, yet it has enough speed for most cities, more than enough range for city ride, 18" and all that in 24kg slim compact body.
@GoGeorge
@GoGeorge Жыл бұрын
id have to disagree with you there. the 18xl is a great little wheel, but its to slow for street riding. your in a dangerous spot riding on the side of the road. you need something that can safely handle 40 mph so you can ride with traffic in the city comfortably and not be teetering on cutout or being a road onstacle constantly

Having both a Master and the Sherman S, and ridden the S22 I can say it's less about the voltage and more on how it performs. The Sherman S is faster and has more torque than the 126V S22. And only slightly less than the 134V Master. I know it SHOULDN'T be that way, but the efficiency and quality of the Sherman S holds its own next to the other, higher voltage wheels.

@SlowenLow yes however a big part of me feels safer having the extra if I should need it. I have had low voltage cutouts and I would rather avoid.
@SlowenLow
@SlowenLow Жыл бұрын
@@dirt.surfer You have to remember that the low voltage cutout pictures because the voltage of the individual cells in series drop too low, and they sag when attempting to draw more to stay balanced. This happens on the higher voltage wheels too, though to your point you have slightly more headroom because of their combined voltage. Cutouts suck, so I get your concern.
