One thing that bothers me about female main characters in fantasy (and other genres) is that they never mention their period. It's a weird pet peeve, but it's just soooo unrealistic if they try to survive or are travelling or wathever for months and they never mention their period. I mean...how do they survive in the jungle without tampons? Just a little unrealistic. Another thing is typos, they irritate me so much!

You should read "The Gift" by Alison Croggon. There is a chapter where the main character has her first period and its funny but at the same time really well played. And throughout the rest of the book she states that she needed to bring pain medicine and how her cycle was aligned with the moon cycle. I really enjoyed the book.

YESSS! I am reading The Forest of Hands and Teeth series by Carrie Ryan and literally the first book, nobody mentions a period. I'm like "helloo! You live in a village with no modern medicine or real women products! How do you deal with a period?!" It drives me nuts. When I first read The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, I was surprised. Literally the first chapter is about the main character starting her period and it's this big thing and I'm like "girl, same." It's refreshing when characters are relatable. Periods also happen every month? How can a girl skip talking about it?

Starlit Unicorn for me, I don't like love triangle resolution. I don't feel like there's ever a good way for them to end. Either both love interests are likable, in which case I just hate the main character for dragging them both along because they deserve so much better. Or, one love interest is obviously better than the other, in which case I just want the main character too forget about the loser and go be happy. In cases where the main character picks the "wrong one" it seems really wrong that this amazing person got their heart broken, and it gives the main couple's happiness a bitter edge. I hope that helps, just my personal opinions, others probably feel differently.
@firebow2810
@firebow2810 6 жыл бұрын
Starlit Unicorn its cliché and overused. It doesn't give the story something interesting and makes it very common. It's the same thing over again: should I chose him/her or him/her? It gets really repetitive and adds nothing interesting. That's my opinion anyway

I do the exact same! That's one reason why I enjoy books that don't usually describe what the character looks like. I literally just create this picture of someone by hearing their name and they have a face. The worst for me is when they put a face on the cover of the book........... I hate it. I love creating my own character and when they put an actual face (on the cover) to the main character, it ruins everything. Because then I can't see anything but the face on the cover and I'd rather my brain do it than the covers.

I highly dislike it when the main character is just realizing how 'magical' they are. Unless its explained like a random magical girl type thing, but I mean they suddenly find out that their parents have been hiding this huge secret. Here is why: most of the time, the main character just accepts it. There is no realistic reaction 99.9% of the time. If I found out that my parents were hiding that I was some secret supernatural being or powerful, I would be freaking out and questioning why I had never noticed before, not accepting it immediately. Also, I don't care for OP characters.

Can we take a moment and respect Harry Potter once again: An extremely refreshing lack of conventional beauty He fell in love with Ginny BECAUSE she became strong a confident in her own time, his love didn't CAUSE her to become brave and intelligent out of no where.....also she weaved Harry falling in love with her so slowly into the story that it just felt right when it finally came along-insta love was just not even a thing at all (ok except with Mr. and Mrs. Weasley but "when you know, you know") The Hermione/Ron/Lavender "love triangle" was done so subtly and briefly that I wouldn't even really call it a love triangle, it was just the characters maturing into who they were meant to be with Also I hate when characters just automatically either have "straight As" or a "B average" and that just defines them as a human for the rest of the series and then they never bring up school again, HP and Ron literally uniquely struggled through their course work in every single book and that's real life ok Also Harry is hardcore angsty teen in book 5 but then you find out that he literally was being influenced by voldemort's soul and it wasn't just for the aesthetic..... Anyway I have lots more to say but you see my point long live JK Rowling and her perfection

Hey, I know I'm really late, but I wanted to say something First of all, I completely respect your opinion. I'm not trying to force moments on yours or anything. I love Harry Potter and all, but there's definitely some aspects I don't really like. 1.) There isn't much diversity. There's like barely any black people in the school. I've only seen like two in the movies. I think there could be a bit more. 2.) I know this is really picky, but basilisk fangs are supposed to destroy a horcrux, right? And Harry has a horcrux inside of him. In the chamber of secrets, he gets stabbed with a basilisk fang, and it doesn't destroy the horcrux. What? 3.) This is a personal one. I personally prefer some other books to Harry Potter because Harry Potter is just so popular. I prefer to read books that, yes, are popular and are good, but not as popular as Harry Potter. I'm sorry if I offended you with any of these points. And sorry I'm very late

@@igglepiggle8447 yeah almost exactly the same for me. I do love it and all, it's a really good book series, but sometimes I just get a bit sick of it being so popular. Looking up through lashes usually looks like something like this: The character sitting down so that they have to look up at someone, their head slightly lowered and tilted because the character being unable to hold direct eye contact makes them look shy and coy.

These were some good ones, but personally I'm really getting tired of the trope where there's a really pretty female main character who just has really low self esteem so whenever some random guy comes along who becomes a prospective love interest tells her that she's beautiful, she can't even take a compliment so she can't believe he thinks that of her so she just falls in love with him for it, sometimes even regardless of what his personality is like. So if that trope was gone out of books forever I'd really be okay with it! 👌

Since when do windows have pain? Is it in their stomachs? Their ears? Um. . .yeah. No. If you're a writer. . .you should know better than this! Granted, sometimes our fingers hammer out odd spellings, and we can confuse ourselves with when to use different spellings. But the info is all there online! True, a spell check would not catch this. But rewrites, rereads, beta readers, editors. . .SOMEONE should catch this sort of thing. lol

What I hate is when one character blames themselves for something they could not have foreseen. Like: Character A invites character B over for dinner. On their way to the house B gets into an accident and is severely injured or even killed. Then A will blame themselves forever for inviting that person over and I just CAN NOT STAND IT, does anyone use common sense in these books, ever? Don't you have enough issues without blaming yourself for something you by no means of interpretation had any control over?

If it's used as a vessel to guide the characters along, and not just as something the author kind of said happened at the beginning and then uses it as one last attempt to keep the story going when we've all forgotten about it, I think it's fine. One example I can bring up is the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, which I have a lot of issues with, but the prophecies were done very well.

Most of the YA writers these days shove in love triangles to create unnecessary drama. Hardly any of the writers write love triangles that are worth reading. Most of the time it is obvious who the girl will end up with, and it seems like the second guy is only introduced to make the first guy look good . ( I gave the example of a love triangle with one girl and two guys , just became this kind is awfully common.I'm not saying that Love triangles with one guy and two girls don't exist) Besides all this it seems like the writer's twisted attempt of trying to banish the main characters insecurities and no to mention writers come up with this conveniently when they are running out of ideas .

Hi Jesse! I love your vids. Something I personally HATE in books is when the author falsely describes characters. Like when they try to make you think that eg. this person is ruthless and doesn't have emotions, but those things don't describe their actions and in reality they are this emotional sweet and kind person. It just comes off like they are trying to show that this peron is changing but we didn't see the process of them changing.

I feel you on the heavy-handed “important message” bit. I️ certainly don’t mind characters having specific values and naturally living them, so you can just see what they stand for in an organic way. But it drives me bananas I feel like I’m being preached to by the author (and not the character) about their politics/ideology/whatever message they have. And makes me even more frustrated that the author does this and must think it’s subtle enough that we as readers won’t pick up on the fact that they’re giving us a values lecture.

Dude, I was yelling, "PREACH!!!" the entire video. Lol. Love triangles has to be my #1 pet peeve. And repetitive writing is the #1 writing sin I commit myself. 😅

Starlit Unicorn I think a lot of it has to do with bow overdone they are in YA at the moment. I do actually like love triangles when they're well done and they contribute to the plot in a significant way (think the Hunger Games where the boys represent Katniss' old life vs. her new life). But often the second love interest seems thrown in, a lazy attemptbat drama when there are SO many ways to create drama between two people.

+MargaretTheWordN3rd Yes same, sometimes I repeat the word however too much or I put too many gasps or groans or things like that but think am definitely getting better at it! Am currently studying Creative Writing at university and am working on two scifi short stories for an assignment portfolio :)

I love sarah j maas books too, but w hers specifically i dont like how possessive the character ships are of each other. Like they are constantly dominating each other saying "you are mine" and making like they own the other person. Idk i dont find that romantic at all maybe its just me lol

One that really drives me nuts in Sarah J Maas novels is the description of someone being “feral.” Like, what does that even mean? How can a human look feral? And why does every single person look feral at some point or another? Why did she use feral twice on the same page? IS FERAL THE NEW FAD?! 😂

I never noticed it while reading any of her books, because i'm so emerged in the world that it feel real, so the writing just sort of floats. Maybe I should do a re-read and see if I notice it :D

The only love triangle I'll accept is Jem, Tessa and Will. I think the main reason for it is the relationship between Jem and Will - they were so close and one of the thing I mostly notice in love triangles is the 2 people who like that one person are always super jealous of each other and hate each other. Both of them only wanted the best for Tessa and it was so wholesome and sweet.

I don't like when books throw you shovels and shovels of information about characters, relationships between characters, events that happened to those characters or any backstory from characters you don't even know who they are because is the first time they appear, and which by the way, sometimes don't even appear again, in a single chapter for you to remember and be able to understand and follow the rest of the chapters that will be about all that pile of info. I'm talking about The Passage. I'm lost half of the time and have to go back to remember who they are talking about too often.
