Wow, I've never heard someone speak so highly of kneippbrød before. I guess it's because we consider it as a really generic type of bread.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing when you praised "kneippbrød", because it's the simplest, cheapest bread you can buy :D Such a great video, you're so passionate in the way you tell about your experiences, and have this great charisma. Really enjoyed watching it.

Reindeer is much more "gamey" then red deer. I think you was thinking about pinnekjøtt (traditional norwegian dish) That is made from lamb or sheep. Not reindeer. Some places in the north of norway where Im from, we do make pinnekjøtt from reindeer, but that is low volume and special interest food. And it is very gamey in taste

Just for the information - pinnkjøtt is made from ribs of lamb, salted and dried - sometimes also smoked. You water it out av slow-cook.

Nice video. The good gentleman seems to be talking about when he was in Norway in his teens. He mentions grocery stores closing at four in the afternoon. That was like in the 1980s. Already by the late 1980s the at the time ruling conservatives changed rules so that shops could finally stay up late and by the 1990s it was common for more and more supermarkets etc to stay up late in the evening. Nowadays my local grocery stores opens at 06 in the morning and close at midnight six days a week, so a lot of what is described here was only true back in the old days. Same goes for the amount of cars. It is now common for a lot of families to own multiple cars. Not so much 30+ years ago. Other than that he is spot on about most stuff. I hope he gets to revisit the place. Peace.

Lutefisk is not a fermented food, it is Lut as in caustic soda. So fish filet treated in an Alkali bath.

Regarding how long stores have open, that has changed over the years. For a long time it used to be common for them to be open 8/9AM-8PM (6 on Saturdays). But now they are open much longer. Many to 10 or 11PM, but some also 2AM. As well as some having smaller stores open on Sundays. Gas stations and stores like 7-Elen might have open 24h.

LOL kneipbrød is the cheapest bread you get, my mom used to buy it when I was a kid.

Pinnekjøtt usually is made from lamb and not reindeer. Lutefisk is mostly eaten in winter. Norvegia is nice, but Jarlsberg is better ;-)

Pinnekjøtt (literally STICK MEAT because the meat is prepared with birch sticks in the water to add flavor) is not from reindeer, it's from regular old sheep, and is one of the two most traditional dishes for Xmas - that and Rib (from pigs). Some do have Lutefisk for Christmas. The best dish you can ever eat from reindeer is Finnbiff - it's like a forest pot /stew, but with reindeer. Is one of the best dishes you can eat.. period.

Pinnekjøtt is not made by reindeer. It is made by lamb. It is smoked, salted and dried. Somebody may make something similar of reindeer, but I haven't heard about that. And I have a large family spread through out Norway. But a stew or a steak made of reindeer is really tasty.

Regarding the word for girl you were referring to, I guess you're talking about "pike"?🙂 I know what other word you're talking about which means something very different indeed😂 You could do yourself a favor and use another word for girl so you don't have to worry about getting in an awkward situation. The word I would suggest is "jente". Means exactly the same as "pike" and lets you avoid any misunderstandings👍 Oh, and by the way: you do sound like an American speaking Norwegian, at least to me, but less so than a lot of other Americans I've heard through the years😉

17th of may isnt our independence day but rather ouer constitution day, the union with sweden was technically abolished on the 26th of october when the king of Sweden (Oscar ii) renounced the Norwegian crown. The dissolution of the union was approved by the Storting on 7 June. So the confusion is totally understandable

The 17th of May is the constitution day of 1814. So, it has nothing to do with independence day! As you know the union with Sweden (1814 - 1905) was just a personal union where we just shared the same king with Sweden. Everyone speak English in Norway, BUT if you speak Egnlish you are a foreigner and will never come that close to people, and the different kind of friendship you mention.. "Grocery stores open from 8 to 4?" hmm.. I can`t remember ever seing a shop with such short opening hours .. I go to REMA1000 and KIWI quite often, and they are open from 7-23, (closed on sundays)

Kneip is nice fresh. But really the least good of all the nice bread we have.

hehe yes our bread is good, but don`t go for the "kneip" bread. Kneip bread is the cheapest bread both in prize, quality and taste. But on the other side, if you love our kneip bread, you will really love the quality bread we have. :) And just to be clear about this thing about troll`s, there is not a single Norwegian that use them to scare away evil spirits.. lol Yes, troll`s comes from a old traditional folklore, but nobody actually believe in it. But we do think they are funny and cosy, and they are part of our culture, so we love them. :) And when you see a lot of our landscape it is easy to understand how people believed in them in the ancient times. ;)

Where does your friend live? It must be very desolate. Grocery stores and department stores are open from 06 - 24. Even in small towns 06-23. On Sundays, only smaller grocery stores are open - many of them 24/7. Now in December, all stores are open - but there is freedom of choice.
