There's a lot of both Dark Souls III and Sekiro in there, mechanically speaking.

Even if hand animated, unless he is used a lot more than in this one fight it still woudn't even be that bad to animate individual fingers in most animation software, annoying yes, but we'de be talking an extra week or two for one artists to go over all likely animations and polish off the fingers after the fact tops, and most likely less than a day or two even honestly. Just pray there's no issues that require changes to its rigging/animations/mesh/skeleton making you redo it all. That's the biggest reason to have the rig set up right the first time since unless its a simple short animation sequence or so for him, you'll save time in the long run on any redos or stuff and sadly those always come up in development. Right now doing those on dragons myself... damn wings and their membranes not all being finely enough weighted between the different bones...

True that man. I tend to get really really invested in the lore of video games and one of the things that intrigues me the most is the setting of a once great kingdom/nation that has fallen into ruin and is now a shell of its former glory(Dark Souls and Hollow Knight both immediately come to mind but there are probably other examples too). They’re as vast as they are awe-inspiring, and yet, they’re far past their prime lore-wise. It’s as if the player’s entire journey merely takes place in the epilogue of the kingdom’s story and you just can’t help but wonder how incredible this place used to look before everything went down. Elden Ring seems like it’s taking place the slightest bit before the story’s epilogue, which I think is going to make it very unique among these sorts of games

I'm not going to know where to begin when I can finally dig into this game. After the troubled development of Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III, it's great to see so many things in Elden Ring that they had planned to do that didn't make it into those games. For as human as the arachnid ladies looked, they were stoic and silent, largely defined by their relationships. @@theguitarhero333 Fromsoft has a nack for elaborate and showy boss cutscenes that often employ clever techniques to function in engine. Zullie has covered a number of them from each game but the best example that come to mind would be the ds1 O&s fight where instead of Super Ornstien actually growing they made a copy of the boss room and shrink it to make him look bigger. In the case of this transforming boss it'll be interesting to see if the two phases will just be different boss models or if From will use the trick of having the dragon arm as a separate paired npc that is either always there but hidden (like the Bloodborne frenzy enemy Zullie has a video on) or otherwise hidden away somewhere waiting to be teleported in. (another common trick From uses for cutscene assets) The cutscene itself will probably be quite over the top considering the boss is already fairly heavy on the body horror with all the extra limbs and fingers. Likely tearing off his own arm to attach the wyvern head since the statue is seen missing it's head in phase two.

About Godrick, it is entirely possible that his bone count is not as high as it seems. While every arm does need at least two bones, hand movements for the superfluous hands don't seem very complex so they could definitely just be cycling between two shape keys. @@itsprod.472 yes, it's very obvious that they're not only using the same engine but even a good bit of the same codebase. I don't know if any animations in previous games use shape keys though. It'd be a lot more than just two or so, since when the cloak comes off you see them gradually opening up one finger at a time slightly out of sync, so that'd be at least on per finger... and likely for each hand or in groups of the hands... but that all relies on them having made the initial mesh with all those fingers in different states anyway, likely done via bones and skinning so they would have a version of the model with the extra bones anyway. And the reality is... at least in all engines I've used, morph targets/mesh weighting/shape keys, etc... are for simple things like this, much more expensive than just adding extra bones are. If you have facial animations where you'd need like sixty bones to replicate that, and all of these facial morphs affect that same head mesh bit, then it's worth it arguably, but using a morph for a finger that only saves maybe three or so bones? Not worth it performance wise I'd say. And it'd also limit your abliity to reference the bones in engine if you want to stick particles on the fingers or hands or rings or other items. The only reason I can think of them doing that would be if they have a hard limit on the number of bones they can support for their skeletal meshes... And while I'm certain they do, normally it'd be much higher than what I'd expect to see on him even with every finger getting its own bone, and numerous bones on his cloak and other stuff to help with all that smooth animation. So my money is on it just being lots of normal bones in this case... If it was like dozens of hands randomly opening and closing, then sure, make them instanced meshes maybe using a blend mesh or bones itself... but these looked more tightly mixed into the main mesh and acted more in line with his animations and actions so that's not really an option here.

@@terricon4 There could be a quiet model swap between cutscene and battle to shift from an intricate bone-heavy model to one that isn't so detailed. That would allow for the cutscene to do things the boss can't do in battle but which wouldn't make sense in battle anyway. Just my 2 cents. We'll have to wait until the game is released to get into details like this.

From’s decision to call them dragons and not wyverns specifically probably comes from George R. R. Martins giving his dragons four limbs instead of six because he wanted them to follow real world biology. Wyverns exist in the world of ice and fire, but are different creatures entirely. Most terrible of all are the wyverns, those tyrants of the southern skies, with their great leathery wings, cruel beaks, and insatiable hunger. Close kin to dragons, wyverns cannot breathe fire, but they exceed their cousins in ferocity and are a match for them in all other respects save size. -The World of Ice and Fire

also, about the NPC instanciation on the flight : it is specified that summonable spirits are equipped at a bonfire, so there might be some trick going on with that, maybe they have an NPCs pool with all of them disabled (hidden basically), and once you use your item or whatever to summon spirits it draws the chosen ones from the pool, activate them, and disable them once they die so they can return to the pool of summonable NPCs. That's how game devs handle complex autonaumous bullets in shooter games for example.

@@Whodjathink I will admit, I _have_ always enjoyed finding ways to make magic work effectively in pvp in From's titles, due in no small part to the playstyles that has led me to, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I can also see, at least in Dark Souls 3, that they at least seemed to acknowledge that there needed to be spells specifically designed to be used in pvp such as the Farron darts and lightning arrow spells. However, trying to fight primarily with magic in pvp in Soulsborne has almost always been a fool's errand. You can kind of pull it off with pyromancy in narrow situations using specific builds, but outside of the Dark Souls 3 dueling arena, pyromancy's effectiveness falls off hard, as does the effectiveness of healing spells. What's more, there's not a whole lot of good magic can accomplish in pve outside of 'blow it up.' Yes, there are rare, niche situations where something like fall control or hidden body/hush can be useful, but when was the last time anyone remembers using, or seeing someone use, Undead Rapport? It's just faster and easier to fireball the thing and move on. Even a lot of the damage spells in Dark Souls have serious problems. Again looking at pyromancy in Dark Souls 3, every pyromancy they introduced with the DLCs are just trap options. It's literally more damage per second to just spam your best direct fireball nuke, and Bursting Fireball (the fireball shotgun) is similarly useless, which is a tragedy because it's a cool spell. It's the kind of thing that _should_ be a great frontal cone AoE for when you get rushed by multiple enemies. . . but you're still better off hucking the biggest fireball you have and hoping some of the enemies get caught in the blast. I've been talking about pyromancy, but all forms of spellcasting in From's games have these issues. Don't even get me started about Bloodborne. I don't need every spell to be good, I understand there will be some trap options no matter what they do, because not everything can be equally useful, but surely, a majority of the available spells should have their moments to shine, moments where the player will feel like they've made the right choice by going with that spell over a more 'standard nuke' spell. Unusual spells in pve have to be more than just unusual, they have to be good, and if magic is ever to be viable as a primary fighting strategy, as opposed to a supplementary toolkit, my opponent must be forced to do more than just roll directly at me and through the effect, by the spell I cast. Not asking for an 'I-win' button, but I was one of the first people to come up with the iron flesh / sacred flame combo, and when people started getting wise to that, I switched it up with black flame. The Scott Jund put out a meta-dueling pyromancer build, that basically used fire surge to provoke someone into doing something stupid and charging into black flame, or to just slowly, aggravatingly, burn someone down if they were using an ultra. Sure, it's fun when that's an _option_ , but not when it's just about the only way to make pyro good in duels. The possibilities with things like a combination of ranged AoE effects like the arrow rain, and the ability to summon spirits, makes me cautiously optimistic, but I still need to be convinced. Just once, I'd like to not be _as handicapped as I am_ when I play pure spellcaster builds in pvp, and I'd like to actually have more cool and interesting options for spellcasting in pve.
@Whodjathink

@@stupidanon5941 I read this all and I completely agree. Certain spells like Fall Control end up being useless (and a waste of a slot) when rings can do the exact same thing. And I hate how it feels like you're fighting an uphill battle when it comes to spellcasting in a souls game. Bloodborne I give a slight pass because they were more about guns and hunting. Like if a "normal" person went up against monsters kind of thing, so at least thematically it works. But in the other souls games where they have enemies and bosses' spells be more effective than yours, then yeah it's a major problem. People will bring up how it'll be difficult to balance magic yet having low health/stamina and a much higher requirement to even wield spells doesn't seem to be "balanced" in their eyes. While I'm on the topic of requirements, it's outright ridiculous some of the requirements to use some of the spells/miracles/pyromancies and the amount of damage you actually get out of it. It's almost never worth the investment to ever use anything outside of a straight/greatsword half the time

2:30 Mind is Attunement which increases the FP and adds additional Attunement Slots aka. Memory Slots. Luck in DS3 is basically replaced by Arcane which basically increased the character's Item Discovery but here Arcane might have additional benefits like for example, increasing the time spirits can be summoned.

Interesting that they said pvp AND invasions like they were 2 separate things. Maybe that means that we'll also get some sort of arenas.

Sounds good to me. I dunno if I'm the only one out there that dislikes it but I hated invading people only to invade into a world setting up a fight club while there's arena's you can go to with 2v2's and such.

The "soul greatsword" used in the godrick fight isn't cast with a spell, so I think it might actually be a weapon skill that requires high FP cost and some intelligence (so perhaps weapon skills have stat requirements themselves)

I’ve heard on a discord server that spells can be cast potentially with melee weapons, but are nowhere as good as through a staff or other catalyst.

@@kanseidorifto2430 I highly doubt the authenticity of that, just because it seems so weird; and we can't really say if the "soul greatsword" here is an actual spell or not. looking at the stat screen: VGR, MND, END seem to be the stats for HP, M/FP, and SP. Arcane might just be our summoning/luck stat. Equip load being laid out clearly has me hopeful that they'll be more informative a la DkS2 rather than DkS3's stat screen and numbers being unclear. Also hoping that since STR effects equip load, they don't tie cast speed to DEX again lol

It's so weird to me, someone who played Armored Core games before Demon's Souls was even a twinkle in its father's eye, that people know From Software for their melee-focused action-RPG games. Armored Core had its rough patches as a series, but I think I can solidly recommend Armored Core and its two sequels, Armored Core 2 and its sequel, Armored Core 3 and its sequel, and Armored Core 4 and its sequel. (Yes, I know how weird that looks. It makes sense if you look up how they named/numbered the games.)

Tbh I wouldn’t judge the game until the hype dies off a few months after release. We still don’t know if magic is any good, what the meta would be like, etc. to make any claims on if this game will cover every complaint. It’ll probably be really good, but I doubt it’ll be the perfect game you’re hyping right now.

Stats are pretty clear: Vigor = HP Mind = FP + Memory Slots Str, Dex, Int, Fth = same as DS, scaling stats Arcane = Item Discovery (base is 100 as usual + 10 from Arcane), Luck, other minor scaling (e.g. like bleed / hollow in DS3)

I think I'm most excited for new weapon types, personally I like the flail weapon type and the small showcase we get on that last summoned npc (with the new onion armor, pumpkin armor) its also nice to see the return of twinblades and possible power stance?

Power stance would be interesting but it would be hard to have weapon arts as well, While i think it is a possibility that maybe weapon arts just wouldn't be avaliable while power stancing Knowing dark souls its probably just not there, but one can hope.

so many interesting this we can take away from what they've shown. The standouts for me so far are: - obvious Soulsborne assets - Sekiro stealth and assets - BotW Map and waypoints - BotW/HorizonZeroDawn crafting system - casting/magic arts looks lit - there a spell that is cast in the original video that is the same as the terror beam Shichimen warriors use in Sekiro - they've SOMEWHAT improved the jumping animation from the leaked clip we recently saw

If I had to guess, I would wager that Vigor is health, Endurance is stamina/equip load,Str and Dex are probably classic weapon types, The split between Faith, Intelligence, Mind and Arcane is a little less clear though. I would assume due to it's positioning in the list that it acts similar to DS3 attunement. Faith is probably classic fromsoft miracles, however int/arc is confusing. This might be a stretch but I have to wonder if there is a third type of magic, int covering sorceries and Arcane covering the summoning of creatures/phantoms of enemies that we see in the video. As for how the spirits work, since it is an open world map, I wonder if there would be ds1 style nearly no loading gates and that the NPCs would just be hidden offscreen, with only a few sets covering vast swathes of the map each. Beyond that I find it interesting that it looks like they might be continuing the whole greed=bad physical change. Godrick seems really corrupted and warped, something that also applied to previous mimics (if I remember correctly greedy humans became mimics.) I'm not surprised that they are bringing back chargeable magic, it doesn't seem to bee too much of a stretch going from chargeable heavy attacks and the old moonlight spell to many more chargeable magic attacks. Overall I can't wait to see Zullie chop this thing up and figure out how it ticks. Especially how it deals with NPC ability to follow the player and whether the world will be 'zoned' or if it will be considered by the computer to be one massive area

if they streamline int to be both pyros and sorceries, i expect arcane, along with being a luck stat, will allow us to use certain tools like the dragon head stone we see the other coop player use, and possible things not unlike hunter tools in bloodborne. i could be wrong tho
