Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a country which attracts fewer backpackers than its Thai and Vietnamese neighbours however still lures in tourists largely because of its history and magnificent temples.
However, when I visited for a week in August 2023, I really didn’t fall in love with the country in the way I did for Vietnam and Thailand. So, as part of a new travel tip series, here’s 9 things I wish I knew before visiting Cambodia.

Lived here for over 6 years, this seems a pretty fair appraisal. There is a huge disparity between life in the city and life in the countryside. I know what you mean about the buses but they are the best way to travel here in lieu of much of a rail system and inexpensive, or you can take taxis from city to city. In my experience, some buses are just horrendous, particularly the cheaper night buses, but others aren't too bad - select your company carefully! If you're really brave you can rent a car or moto. I've heard the borders can be a nightmare and I wouldn't consider leaving the country except by plane. Being ripped off - par for the course, it's not exclusively reserved for foreigners and even locals have to bargain. Eventually you get to know local prices and learning a few suitable words in Khmer can also go along way. It does get tiring though and I sometimes find myself taking the easy way out and using the more expensive supermarkets with pre-determined prices. Angkor Wat - the first time I visited I was, to be honest, disappointed. The tickets are, in my opinion, expensive though once you've lived here for two years, you receive a free pass to all the sites which is great. I think the best way to get the most out of this beautiful place is to visit the museum in the town to learn as much as you can and employ a knowledgeable tuk-tuk driver who can take you to several different sites (there are many, many if you have more time) and tell you what you are looking at. The official guides are generally pretty knowledgeable as well. Just visiting the building is, for many people, a bit of an empty experience. However, for those who are interested, there's a stack of excellent videos about this place on KZfaq so a little prior research goes a long way. There's also masses of amazing wide-life - if you know what to look out for. It is what it is. I'm, hopeful especially with the new Prime Minister, it's a country on the way up. Enjoy your travels.

Oh my god how annoying is the cash thing in Cambodia!! This got me so many times but eventually worked it out. Definitely something people need to be aware of before they visit!

My introduction to Cambodia was a clown of a tuk tuk driver who took me from the airport to the center of PP but wouldn't take me to my requested destination. Instead, he dropped me off in front of a hotel paying kickbacks for travelers and wouldn't go further if I didn't stay in "his" hotel.
