About Handmaid's Tale: The Handmaid's Tale is an American dystopian tragedy television series created by Bruce Miller, based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. The series was ordered by the streaming service Hulu as a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes, for which production began in late 2016. The plot features a dystopia following a Second American Civil War wherein a totalitarian society subjects fertile women, called "Handmaids", to child-bearing slavery. The first three episodes of the series premiered on April 26, 2017; the subsequent seven episodes were released every Wednesday. In May 2017, the series was renewed for a second season; which premiered on April 25, 2018. In May 2018, Hulu renewed the series for a third season, which premiered on June 5, 2019. In July 2019, the series was renewed for a fourth season, which is scheduled to premiere in 2021. In September 2019, it was announced that Hulu and MGM were developing a sequel series, to be based on Atwood's 2019 novel The Testaments. The Handmaid's Tale's first season won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. It is the first show produced by Hulu to win a major award as well as the first series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series. It also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama. Elisabeth Moss was also awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actress. Season 4 of The Handmaid's Tale is premiering in 2021. Originally, the new season was scheduled to premiere in fall 2020, but production came to a halt in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Six months later, in September, production resumed in Toronto.
This time around, viewers can expect 10 episodes instead of the usual 13, one of which will be directed by actress Elisabeth Moss (June Osborne). According to showrunner Bruce Miller, the decision “was 100% creative,” allowing the show to focus on a smaller part of the story instead of multiple story arcs. "Some storylines just seem to shake out as a 10-episode story, in my eyes,” he told IndieWire. “It gives us a little more freedom because you can rely more on one propulsive element." The teaser for season 4 shows the last time we saw June and hints at what's to come. "I can't rest. My daughter deserves better. We all deserve better. Change never comes easy," June says in it. "This war isn't going to win itself. We're just getting started." Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale will feature the show’s regulars - Elisabeth, Max Minghella (Commander Nick Blaine), Bradley Whitford (Commander Joseph Lawrence), Joseph Fiennes (Commander Fred Waterford), Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy Waterford), Alexis Bledel (Dr. Emily Malek Ph.D.), Samira Wiley (Moira), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), O-T Fagbenle (Luke Bankole), Madeline Brewer (Janine), and Amanda Brugel (Rita). In addition, Sam Jaeger who portrayed American representative Mark Tuello throughout season 2 and 3 was added to the main cast for the latest installment. Viewers will also spot a new face from Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House. Actress Mckenna Grace will play Mrs. Keyes, described as “a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence.” The new character will show duality with a “calm and pious” exterior but actually suffers “with turmoil” and “insanity” internally. Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Joseph Fiennes, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Alexis Bledel, Madelaine Brewer, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, Nina Kiri, Sydney Sweeney

I don’t see anything revealing in this video. And some things made no sense like claiming Joesph orchestrated the bombing. What Joseph orchestrated was using June’s daughter against her. Nick probably was involved too. Nick is not what he seems. He’s a bad boy and is becoming more and more powerful.

The song “fix you” was written by Chris Martin (Coldplay) for his then wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, after her father passed away. It was meant to support her through her time of loss. I think the song was chosen as June was faced with the devastating realization that she may have lost Jeanine who was like a daughter to June.

When June was screaming at Serena "Do you understand me." was not only was that a call back to season 1 for it's wording but also the colour of top June wears is the same blue that Srena was wearing. It is total role reversal, Serena is the one on the floor crying and June has the power.

Watching through the series the second time, I noticed that you can watch as Gilead actually trains the Handmaid's to be fighters without realizing it. By making them execute people in many ways, Gilead made them capable of killing; by beating and torturing them, Gilead taught them to handle pain, hunger, fear, etc.; by making them witness the torture, rape and murder of their friends, Gilead taught them to stay strong and keep fighting, even with broken hearts; the more alone they try to make the Handmaids feel, the stronger it makes each one of them, and the tighter it brings them together.

Another "mirroring moment" - when June leans in next to Mrs. Keys ear and says, "make me proud", it reminded me of Aunt Lydia saying that to "her girls". Oh, and the color of June's clothes when they destroy Fred - the deep, powerful shade of red they used for her coat really added a gut level vibe to the whole scene. Unlike all the other reds they've used so far, this red looked like a deep pool of fresh blood.

We also saw similar circles in other Salvagings, in the funeral for the Handmaids who died in the bombing, surrounding the Handmaid who had the stillbirth in an earlier season, when they were being reviewed by High Commander Winslow. Here's one. When the handmaids were summoned to perform an execution, aunt Lydia always used a whistle, be it, a stoning, beating or hanging. So, Waterford should have known he was going to be executed no matter what, and he should have especially known he was going to be brutally executed by handmaids if he chose the whistle. I mean he helped Gilead make the rules.

They also state that Lydia is a sadist due to the way she chooses to punish the hand maids. The commanders determine when the punishment is given but Aunt Lydia decides how, so he quite possibly could have been so ignorant as to forget what his fate was.

I didn't see red columns in Fred's cell but I noticed his furniture seems more harsh and ascetic than Serena Joy's. A few things you missed: 1. The puzzle the semi-retired Aunts are completing is of a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary surrounded by child-like angels. Mary was often depicted in a rose or red gown (Handmaids) and a blue veil (Wives). Throughout the show, we've seen how the Aunts put together various pieces of puzzles to "create" the artificial families of Giliad. There's even a quote about handmaids being like jigsaw puzzles in Atwood's The Testaments. Not only does Holy Mary represent the ultimate power of women (Holy Mary is the first woman to ascend into heaven, speaks to angels, was the only one to stay by Jesus's cross to face the darkness of the crucifixion, etc.), but she was never defined by men during her lifetime. She is free from original sin (and all sin), and represents of all of the virtues. Lastly, in Luke 1:38, Mary spoke to the angel Gabriel, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." 2. "You Don't Own Me" was also played over the credits of Season 1 Episode 1 ("Offred"). The irony is hilarious, particularly after June's talk with Fred about missing Offred and Fred's regularly referring to June throughout the season as "Offred."

3. The circle created at the Salvaging - throughout the series, circles (and especially circles of Handmaids) are prevalent - circle of life, eternity, fidelity, purity, perfection, etc. - at births, at deaths, in grief, in celebration.

@juliascott8370 3 жыл бұрын
Last bit about the circles - kind of funny how June states earlier to Tuello, "Weak men, huh? They make the world go 'round." Fred did make the world go 'round and it killed him - and in No Man's Land to boot.

Street spirit is also about the fact that, in the end, we all loose. Death wins. Tom York says he likes to sing that song in last because it drains all his energy, and he feels like he is watching a tragedy when the public euphoric sings that song, like they don't get it. It's the Eleventh Hour, which carries a similar meaning to "the last minute", suggesting that something major is about to happen. There's also a biblical reference to the Eleventh Hour which implies that those who converted to Christianity later should be treated the same as those who converted early on. If that applies here somehow, though, I'm not seeing it.

The first thing I noticed watching the whole season 4 is the "You Don't Own Me" track was the first ending track used in season 1 ep 1 and used to end the last ep of season 4. Also, the "DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!" scene already happened in season 1 when June told Serena she had her period and she's not pregnant & told June she will not leave her room, it happened again but in reverse in season 4 & it was the coolest thing for me. and the aerial shot of the handmaids torturing Fred was made similarly to Gilead's salvaging (not ceremony).

"You don't own me" was played in the end of the very first episode. It's basically June's leitmotif and the showmakers aren't that subtle about it. So not only it meant that June was taking her agency back from Fred and getting her revenge - I think it meant that June truly believed that throughout her time in Gilead, getting punished for it, being forced to hide her true spirit, and finally she could act on it.

Luke walks in and sees Nichole with blood on her face, inadvertently put there by June after murdering Fred (and we won't ask how the blood stayed fresh that long). This would be traumatic for any (step-)parent to see, and indicates that June isn't in a healthy frame of mind to be raising a child right now. June realizes this and also realizes that Luke's instinct would be to immediately remove Nichole to keep her safe, but she asks him for five minutes with her first, presumably to say goodbye.

I believe it comes from the death penalty in the USA. On the day of execution they have til midnight to call it off. So 11pm is the last hour you can call it off and if you get a call from the governor to pardon them. They say the call came at the 11th hour.

In society the 11th hour is the last amount of time before something happens that is generally considered horrible. In Chrisitan doctrine it is when Jesus will come back as a "thief in the night". Fred's death was imminent so hence it was the 11th hour for him.

@thesleeper7080
@thesleeper7080 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. That has already been debunked by the showrunner and the actor. In fact the show runner said there is no way a detail like that would be kept secret from the audience. He said there is nothing going on between Tuello and Serena, but now that Fred is dead, Serena may use her wiles on Tuello to try to save her ass.

It is a double entendre: 1) revenge on Serena's behalf for Fred cutting of her finger in Season 2. 2) a fuck you to Serena for all the horrible things she has done. June kept the ring on to signify her husband, Fred, is dead.
@kateyjanson4774

I agree with JC but… I always like to play the what if card. What if the finger was like bringing the broom of the wicked witch to Oz? What if Serena was in on it? Serena’s part in the revenge? What was the zoom meeting about? Was it canceled as the finger scene was happening? Or was it a secret confirmation from June that the deed was done? Da da daaaa lol. Why weren’t Fred and Serena put in real jail (Canada’s jails are nicer than ours but not as nice as that). Was it because Serena was already given immunity and it was all a sham to get Fred to turn into an asset? I hope it’s not some vanilla answer to all of this and it becomes a predictable scenario. I hope they turn on Serena too and she has to go back to Gilead and her baby becomes someone else’s child. I think Serena was way worse than Fred because she was the ultimate gender traitor. She knew what she was doing was wrong all along but she did it anyway. Whereas Fred knew that part of what he did (as in his statement, I know I did SOME things wrong) was wrong however part of him believed in the culture of Gilead and that men were supreme and women were there to makes babies and serve them. He knew in the beginning it was all smoke and mirrors so the wives accepted them screwing the handmaids ( calling it a ceremony) but somewhere along the way he became a man of Gilead and started believing the rhetoric. He became power hungry.

It is not Delilah (who was reviled) but the image is of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God. It's a depiction of the Holy Mother's ascension into heaven as she is lifted up by angels (often painted with her as small children)

What about Fred calling Nick "son" ??!! Are they actually related?

Nick looked up to Fred during the beginnings of Giliad. Fred sort of mentored him. So, by calling him son he tried to get that long gone respect from Nick. Like Nick would owe him

The word Son can both be a term of endearment or an insult. One being of familiarity and the other of talking to a man to insinuate he is not yet a man and is still a boy.

Puppy toes, I kind of get that. The closeups and the (what’s become) standard looking down and then looking up with half hooded eyes has become over done. They even had Serena do it. That was a little cringy bordering on campy. They need a new sound track too. Same sounds of doom for 4 seasons! And those songs…those songs are trying too hard to be pithy. It’s so irritating when they end the episode with some song they think is so “hip” lol. It’s a bit convoluted at times and heavy on the corn. ***But all that said, for real fans, every morsel of emotion, every look, every gesture, is like eating an ice cream cone in slow motion. You just want to spend as long as you can experiencing it, savoring every feeling. I think that’s why they drag it out. But I do think last season, as fabulous (and the best yet) a season it was, they went a little too long on the closeups and storyline. They could have done so much more with that extra time.
