Disney's "Encanto" is the story of a large Colombian family bound together by love and service to their community. But the Madrigals are no ordinary family. From the ability to heal to astonishing strength to speaking to animals, each Madrigal child's gift makes them exceptional -- each child except Mirabel, who for some reason was denied the magic that makes the rest of her family so special. "Encanto" is a heartwarming film the whole family can enjoy, but it's also filled with little touches that might go over the heads of the youngest in the theater. Here are a few things only adults noticed in "Encanto."

I feel like frozen and up are like the best Disney princess movies cause it’s not mainly about falling in love and the classic stuff it’s more fun and some of these songs like surface pressure ,waiting on a miracle, and what else can I do talk about not feeling special or you don’t have to be perfect, and that people get put under pressure, a lot of these songs behind them explain things kid or other people go through and maybe will help them realize things if that makes since but I’m just saying I love these Disney heroines so much it’s more realistic but with magic but this is all just my opinion

People calling Bruno or Abuela the villain really didn't get this movie at all. The only villain is generational trauma. Mirabel's mission was to reunite her uncle with the family and help them all overcome the trauma and pressure they put on themselves due to their gifts.

Most people must think Bruno is the villain because of how he is not on the family tree, showing the viewers that the Madrigals no longer consider him one of them. Also, in the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Pepa said that Bruno actually predicted that on their wedding day, there will be rain, the way Pepa states this, it makes us think that Bruno actually caused the rain, which he didn't.

I think this is why Mirabel didn't get a gift in the same way the others did. All she's ever wanted is to help her family and she was able to do that by saving the family from itself. Then she is gifted with a repaired, better version of Casita and becomes the new heart of the family.

there’s theories of how the first children got their powers through what they thought about their old town’s destruction: Bruno being anxious about their future and him wishing the ppl of his town knowing about the fire beforehand , pepa thinking that if it only rained that day that the town would’ve been saved , and Julieta thinking that if someone stayed behind with the injured, they could’ve been saved
@cerealann2952
@cerealann2952 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, yes, definitely. All of the characters have a big attachment from their powers to their personality. Pepa experiences her emotions a little harder than anyone else, she gets angry or panics fast. Julietta is caring and loving, and she shows this by healing the ones she loves. Bruno is super super superstitious and while this may be related to the trauma of always being blamed for bad things, I think it's still worth a note. Isabella is mentioned to have been considered the perfect child ever since birth. Luisa deeply believes that if she doesn't help every singld way she can she's worthless, and like Bruno, this could be caused by previous expectations from her family. Dolores is shown to be a bit "gossipy" so her hearing power suits her well. The only one that I'm not really sure about is Camilo; Because while he does play a few tricks and is shown to be sarcastic at times and that could relate to his power, he is actually shown to care so so much about his family and even the village, and this is more the centerpiece of his character than being "mischievous" My personal theory is that he might be genderqueer and that's how it's interpreted, but I have nothing to back this up, so it's really just a theory. Anyways, their personalities, identities, beliefs, trauma and interests are definitely in relation with their powers. I'd also push it and say that Mirabel's gift would be a lot like Abuela's; it's not explicitly said that Abuela has a gift, but the creation of the house is definitely on her. I think that Mirabel's gift is a very close bond to the house's magic and it stems from her desire to protect her family, like her Abuela did. (sorry for this whole think piece lolol)

@a.murdoch5446
@a.murdoch5446 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like Mirabel's gift was always the house. In the movie, Mirabel is the only one that the house listens to. I always thought Abuela's gift was the candle and the ability to give gifts to others, it's even on her room door. Mirabel didn't get a "door", because she got the whole house. When everyone runs for the candle, they all use their powers....Mirabel used the casita
@paisleighyt6153
@paisleighyt6153 2 жыл бұрын
It would make sense that her gift is in her connection to Casita because if you pay attention to how the character’s act with Casita, Mirabel seems to have the most love and respect for it. During the opening song, she says the names of 3 parts of the house, and Casita responds by moving those parts. Maybe she has influence over Casita? Maybe not. I also like the idea that she didn’t get a room because she has the entirety of Casita. But would that mean that *she* runs the *house* while Abuela runs the *family* ?

I understand but also that’s nothing new. Plenty of Disney women have gotten to have “masculine” traits while still being feminine, which is good for diversity but not when we don’t really have any super masculine women because then it’s unbalanced. Having so many female characters with strong “masculine“ traits have feminine ones too sort of sends an idea that women have to “compensate” for deviations by being feminine.

I loved that Louisa was a female character not just because it's refreshing to see the physically strongest character be a lady but also because her internal struggle (fulfilling impossible expectations, pressuring herself to be the "responsible woman", keeping the family "up", maintaining a strong facade no matter what) is something a lot of women battle with everyday. Men deal with pressure too, of course, but the self- inflicted expectations of being able to carry every emotional, practical, and mental burden for yourself and others is very real for most women, who end up feeling like they aren't good enough. It meant a lot to be able to see these kinds of nuances in the film, especially since it's about my country!!! Thanks for reading :D

I'd argue that is still more of a guy thing. I mean, the fear of being seen as weak and being scared of opening up because of that is pretty much the story of most guys suffering under toxic masculinity. Especially when they have to "Protect the family, do the work, be the strong one" that's very much a masculine stereotype. That isn't to say that women don't feel that way. They do. I do. But I don't think it's true to say that it's more a woman than a man thing. At most it's equal.

Except there are some deeper aspects of Elsa’s character, like how she is ostracized, and isolated, and believes her powers to be bad/evil. The thing you pointed out actually lies within the real gift she has: she is the only one who can and who will succeed Abuela as "leader" of Madrigal family, that's why she is so in tune with the Casita. She indeed is a integral part of it, the real core and essence, just because of the role she will be charged of and she is destined to. The whole movie is about change, transformation ( the golden butterfly ) and , most of all, about the dualism between tradition ( represented by Abuela) and innovation ( Mirabel, of course ). That's not to say that you're wrong, I just wanted to explain the reason of the connection between the casita and the main character!

A thing I noticed when watching Encanto while pregnant: the flashback where Alma is seen giving the news to Pedro that she is expecting triplets via an origami is super cute, but how would she know? It happens in a village 50 years prior to the main setting of the story, where the most advanced technology we see is an analogic alarm clock: there is no chance she got an ecography. In old times it was probably not impossible for a skilled obstetrician to determine how many babies was a woman expecting, either by the heartbeat or the fetal movements, but only in an advanced stage of pregnancy, and it can be seen that Alma's belly is still flat in that scene, so no way she would know so early on.

This was the most human relatable movie Disney has ever made! The message behind Luisa's song is so powerful! And it was a perfectly fitting metaphor for the unseen weight and pressure women carry for their children and family...It's often not talked about but it's there. I LOVE that the villain of the story was not a person but rather a conflict between people because that is real life!

Luisa is strong because women in Colombia usually carry hard task regardless, they are roll up sleeve strong because a lot of times they were the ones carrying the entire weight of the family. As an older sister she had the generational obligation to keep together the younger siblings. I loved how this movie portrait my family jow we often Forget that we are not alone and carry so much weight for our family. I go on and on but all I can say is that this movie went beyond and also show Colombia as a big family that needs to heal and rebuild. This movie works on sooo many leves. That would also make for a more novel version of a sequel. Instead of the obligatory few months/one year later style with the characters being more or less similar to their first movie roles, we could actually have it set maybe a couple of decades later with Mirabels generation now the elders and the new generations making their marks again. Possibly even with an intrusion from the outside world into their magical refuge (reflecting more intergeneration troubles).

Here are my thoughts: Alma (the Abuela) was sorta the movies antagonist (not going to say villain). Before anyone argues about it please take note of this: there can be people in families who are essentially the bad guy a lot, even if they are meaning well. Through most of the movie, Alma is more harsh with Mirabel than anyone else in the family. Mirabel brings up during the celebration that the house was breaking and the candle almost went out, Abuela takes her seriously at first, but after it seems everything was okay she decides to pull the "My granddaughter is tipsy" card. She was told by Julieta to be easy on Mirabel, then after the ruined dinner engagement party she's told by both Julieta and Agustin that she's too harsh on Mirabel. Great example being Isabel and Mirabel bonding before Alma gets mad at only Mirabel saying she ruined her sisters. Alma knew the magic was starting to fade before Mirabel did, but to keep up her reputation she (as we see towards the climax) blames Mirabel for everything because she's the only grandchild that is different. Only after Mirabel tells her grandmother off that it's actually her fault and not Mirabel's does Alma finally see how she's been to everyone, especially Mirabel. That's when she stops being the antagonist. While she's not a villain, she still did a lot of things to her family that hurt them.

A little correction would be the “tocar madera” or knocking on wood ain’t to wish good luck but to cancel the bad luck you just called into yourself or others such as “knowing my luck, I’ll fall down the starts, oh no, I knock on wood, may it not happen”. In a similar fashion, salt is sprinkled over your shoulder as a way to prevent bad luck since it borrows the idea that we all have a devil looking over our shoulders along with an angel. By throwing the salt over the left shoulder you are essentially blinding the devil for the time being and preventing it from any bad intervention on their side.

"The middle sister Luisa" Luisa literally has a whole musical number about her struggle to be the eldest daughter.

She actually is the middle, she's 19 while Isabella is 22 and Mirabel is 15. She just says she's "older," as in older than Mirabel.

the line is “give it to your sister your sisters *older*” not the oldest. and from what we see from isabel, she isnt giving her problems to luisa. she keeps them deep down and doesnt talk about it. either way luisas song is about how shes under so much pressure because thats what they expect from her.

Madrigal literally means voices singing together and overlapping in song. Also, this movie really drives "home" how important healing your home environment is. It reminded me of a study, where they sent juveniles to therapy to see if that could change their "descending path to crime" later in life. It didn't. However, when they sent their parents/guardians to therapy, that's where they saw improvements. This needs to be talked about more. Loved the movie!

I disagree on a few things. First, the Madrigals founded the village, mayoral at best. Second, if somehow Encanto was made those years ago, Luisa would be dainty and comically strong. That's the point of Luisa, the troped "take all the pressure" Hispanic/Latino middle daughter. Miranda uses, shocker, Latin/Spanish styled music. Superstition is common in Spanish culture. It's well known that it TAKES PLACE IN COLOMBIA. It's advertised as such. Most of this is stuff kids would already know. And weirdly juvenile. EDIT: YOU EVEN SAID THE NAME WRONG??

LOOPER DO BETTER. The real unique thing about Luisa isn't the strong woman angle, it is the recognition that she takes on too much and can't carry it all, and how important it is to be honest with yourself about your lack of boundaries. Protect your gifts, you don't have to be the backbone of the family.

rewatched encanto and wondered if the doors were made with the grown-up versions of the characters or if they grew up with them. if you look at the pictures taken during every ritual, everyone has a door with their grown-up version on it. antonio, on the other hand, has himself as a child on his door. nothing deep, i just thought it was funny

"Knock on wood" isn't an action meant to bring good luck but one to ward off bad luck. Because of how the villagers and family interpret his prophesies and non-prophesy statements, he's come to view himself, and his gift, as bad luck. He is trying to *help* Mirabel, by doing his best to make sure his bad luck doesn't attach itself to her - which he perceives he's already failed, since the day he read her prophesy after she didn't get a gift - and thus means he has to try harder.

I think the important message is that people are more than their gifts, the gift themed rooms are more about cementing the sisters and aunts identity than seeing beyond what they are born to and seeing their personality, it's basically an indictment of hiring or seeing people purely as one thing be it super strength, precognition, skin colour or gender, or sexuality.

None of the other people in the house actively talk to the house and have the house do things for her upon their commands. The house does things for other people, sure, but not because they're asked to - it's usually on the house's own accord. With Mirabel, the house both does stuff for her on its own accord AND does stuff at her order as well. Also, Encanto might be one of my favorite Disney movies because the songs are not just 'filler' between the dialogue. They're an active and integral part OF the dialog and the story. If you removed the songs, you remove key pieces of information that the rest of the dialog simply does not cover.

I like the lack of an antagonist being pointed out. It really highlights the large shift in the programming being instituted in culture. There is no good or evil, just mis understood. You can see this in the changes in the malevent movies as well. She is not evil just miss understood. Unfortunatly the real world does have evil.

For the part about Lin I was actually lucky enough to fall in love with his work when Hamilton came out! I started listening to music via KZfaq and was recommended Candy Store from Heathers, and then came Hamilton. I was like, 10 in 2015/16(around that time) and I've almost always watch movies with music written and composed by him ever since. I was ECSTATIC when Hamilton came out on Disney+.and bawled through the entire thing. 10/10, watch it if you haven't already! Make sure to bring tissues lol.

She says in the end of the movie that she knew he was in the walls and didn’t say anything. There is even a small hint to the reveal he in the the walls in We Don’t Talk About Bruno. When Dolores has her line about Bruno’s vision of the man she pines for would be betrothed to someone else, her next line is “I can hear him now.” Which when listening you would think she means she is repeating his words in her head, but in actuality she probably could hear him at that moment with the rats that she earlier in the movie said they talk a lot in the walls
