and of course many in Wales, especially in the West, speak Welsh. The language has survived despite centuries of persecution and systematic attempts to eradicate it.

No. 5 -- Scram is used in the United States and is Oscar The Grouch's big slogan. Scram is essentially "take a hike" or "get outta here"

4:04 *Scram* : This *is* used outside of Wales - in Liverpool and Cheshire 'Scram' - meaning some food.

In the US, "scram" was colloquial/slang for "get lost," "get out of here," "go away." It's not used much anymore.

I gotta admit, the part in Gaving and Stacey where they're like, "what?! No KFC?!!!" Was like the biggest truth ever at that time when it was on tv! Cx kfc was such a tradition!! Now it's going to maccies or a cheeky Nando's.

Welsh people are more likely to say 'is it' at the end of a sentence that 'init' eg "we're going to the pub, is it?".

In California, we say "like" a lot. Like you know. Valley girls are notorious for it.

4:31 *Ta-ra* : This *isn't* 'a Welsh phrase' - you'll here this used quite commonly in the north of England. One Welsh trait used in this video that hasn't been mentioned - and one that this girl uses throughout: dropping the 'g' from every word ending with a 'g'. Example: " *Annoyin* " ( 2:54)

I'm from Wales and IDK if others from Wales say "who's coat is that jacket" or "who's boots are those shoes." They don't make sense but sometimes we don't realise we say it, Proud to be Welsh

Correct. However, "cwtch" as in secure/safe place is possibly a remnant of the now rarely-heard English verb "couch", which means "To lay in concealement; to hide, conceal; to lie hidden, to lurk". Alternatively, it might be a corruption of the Welsh word "cwt", meaning (amongst other things) pig-pen, shed, cottage, kennel or cubby-hole. The mutation of cwt into cwtch makes sense to me: I have a Welsh dictionary which translates "coal shed" as "cwt glo", but we used to call it a "cwtch glo" when I were a lad.

Words can enter a language at any point, and Welsh has certainly borrowed more from English than the other way around. For example, the Welsh word for funnel is "twndish", from the rarely-heard English word "tundish"; the Welsh for tray is "hambwrdd", from the equally obscure "handboard"; the Welsh word for yeast is "burum", from Old English "beorma"; the Welsh for rabbit, "cwningen", from Old English "cony". There are more recent borrowings like "teliffon", "fforc", "brecwast" (breakfast) and "hofrenydd" (helicopter: the Welsh verb "hofran" derives from the English "hover"). I could give many more examples ("esiamplau"), but these should give us a reasonable ("rhesymol") taste ("tast") of the phenomenon ("ffenomen").

I liked your explanations. I wish you would have used the words/phrases in full sentences as examples. I would like to know more of the Welsh language and culture. Not criticising just wishing. Maybe for your next Welsh language video.

Scram probably comes from Dutch and not an English word - The Welsh is crafu. So, 'scram' isn't Wenglish - 'Dutraeg' perhaps? Could've come via Scandinavia or German ports - like scouse in Liverpool - which may have come from Bremen area? Many of these Scando/German words may have entered Wales through northern England - which has many Scando words.

Nice video! I don't think 'init' is particularly Welsh. For example the English footballer, Rio Ferdinand, is infamous in his early days for saying it.
