One thing I hate is how quickly they just kinda... sweep away concepts I'd love to see more of. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon alone opened up both entire civilisations of alternate universal beings, as well as alternate timeline merge shenanigans with Team Rainbow Rocket. But then there's just... no mention of them again like??? I wanna know MORE!

I remember first playing Diamond as a kid (my first pokemon game btw) and wanting to try out contests like the anime Only to find out that there's only a single contest hall instead of multiple towns each having their own And yeah that's right, a lot of mons aren't good for battle (at least outside of competitive but some even then) but could at least shine in contests, giving them use that way Plus it gives people another fun challenge they can try since it's very different from battling

I agree with the 'opening up the world to more than just battling' point. In SV, they had these really fun new storylines aside from the typical gym badges and elite four, but Arven and Penny's stories still ended with a regular boss battle, like they always have done before. Why could we not have had a huge Team Star base as a final area, or some kind of other test or dungeon to complete the Titans' story? They pushed so hard in pre-release to showcase the different types of exploration we could do, only for it all to end up being just ordinary Pokémon battles like always

Yeah capping off each storyline with a standard battle kind of defeats the purpose of them being different. That's why I liked some of the quests in Legends Arceus, because some of them were just see a Pokemon eat or something totally different!

Actual open world. In Gen 9 you can fight any gym in any order, but it’s really just the wrong order. You’ll be overpowered if you come to fight the grass gym 6th so it’s just a chore at that point. Each gym leader should be programmed with the same team at various levels and stages based off the number of badges the player has.

And when Team Skull was introduced, even if it was pretty obvious to most people that Aether were the real villains, Team Skull was a sort of red herring that hadn't been done before. It was a sort of plot twist, and at that point was an original idea in the series. And they do definitely cause problems for people. I think the games do a pretty good job establishing when the stakes are a lot lower (heck, in Sun and Moon a Skull grunt lampshades that they aren't out to conquer the world or anything like that), and it arguably makes more sense for our character to be involved in these lower-stakes conflicts as a new trainer. I haven't gotten to play the switch games yet, but I did personally like Team Skull. Even if the writing around them and the Aether Foundation was kinda predictable (this is a game for kids after all), the framing of them as the initial main villains, in part by calling them a Team, acted as a red herring, and helped with the (again admittedly predictable) twist reveal of Lusamine and Aether as the real main villains of the game. It is entirely possible that that's overused at this point or that the newer ones don't work like that (again I haven't gotten to play them yet), but at that point this was an original type of storyline and they were at least better than Team Flare imo. yes but the alternative is plowing through with your lead pokemon and being unable to handle anything once they go down. using only one pokemon is always the optimal strategy. especially without the exp all. anything else is a waste that leaves the entire team under-leveled, not necessarily underpowered as using only one does leave you as a glass cannon without coverage, but glass canons are better than mid-tier nonsense where you have to burn several days all the time to keep up with the curve. grinding is an unfun waste of time.

All encourages putting Pokemon in boxes more and using more random Pokemon rather than keeping a core "team" to avoid over-leveling (which I guess is why boxes are more accessible than ever beginning in Gen VIII). I like that the EXP Share is permanent and shares it between all of the Pokémon in the party. I hated the old lead and switch method from earlier games, and this way I'm incentivized to try out more than just 6 Pokémon (which is what I do to counter being too overleveled). I do wish that NPC teams were stronger and had more Pokémon, because I've been noticing that a lot of recent games the NPCs always have just 1 or 2 Pokémon. Barely any have 3 and scarcely do they have 4 or more. One thing is heavily dislike is the switch back to breakable TMs. I never used TMs before Gen 5 because I was always worried that I used this one-in-game item (at least the non-purchasable ones) on a Pokémon that didn't really took advantage of it. Making them infinite use was great so that multiple Pokémon in my party could have it, and then for Post-Game use such as for VGC matches. The TR system them made in Gen 8 where some were breakable was a feature I liked because a lot of the moves were very powerful ones, but farming them again wasn't a hassle. I also dislike how Gen 9 made them worst by having to farm several different Pokémon parts as materials to construct the TMs again. Feels like such a hassle

I actually like the breeding system we got in Scarlet and Violet. It's way way faster in producing eggs we want and need, especially with food and sandwiches that we can buy and make. We can also breed a ton right out the bat with strawberry ice cream in Los Platos. Idk, if we're talking about the freedom to explore and time: I'd argue that taking a minute or two of a picnic anywhere (that's flat outdoor land, of course) is much better than travelling all the way to a daycare center, go on an adventure, then go all the way back to a day care center that's out of the way is just more time consuming. I do agree about the pokejobs though. That would be an excellent way of giving more fun for less.

I've put literally thousands of hours into breeding for various things since the mechanic was introduced in gen 2. I feel like the people saying "you could adventure while breeding" in past games are only breeding for the dex. If you're actually breeding for a purpose like IVs or shiny hunting, all you're going to be doing is driving back and forth in front of the daycare on your bicycle/ride pokemon. For example, when breeding for a shiny Kangaskhan in Omega Ruby, I spent the better part of a month doing nothing but holding the button down to drive around the Battle Resort, punctuated by occasionally pressing the A button to grab a new egg or drop a few hatchlings in the PC box. Not exactly compelling stuff. At least with the picnic breeding I can set up hatching power and make myself a cup of tea, and then come back to an nearly full box of eggs ready to take out and hatch. I don't think picnic breeding really stops the flow any more than past breeding did. The pokemon community just likes to constantly complain about anything changing while simultaneously whining that nothing changes.
@AliceNichy2013

@@lostfelinepiesh6917 I agree with you. I can't stress how long and tedious it is to get a Pokémon you want from breeding by going back and forth to a daycare, get eggs, cycle up and down cycling roads, routes, or even around cities just to hatch the wrong set of eggs, return, see if there are any new eggs, repeat, etc. Meanwhile, Scarlet and Violet offers us the easiest and fastest way to get eggs. Make an egg power sandwich, leave switch on for a while, come back and yeah, have a full box or two of eggs. The effect is timer based too so it's easy to switch out pokemon for breeding. No need for PCs or paying (while both are not really a problem, that's a lot of time save too).

Unpopular opinion probably but...: The Picnic-Way to get egg IS superior for so many reasons. Sure the only thing is that you need to stop with exploring but then again you can be in any location where you can set up a Picnic to make eggs. You also still have access to your box so it is easy enough to get in and out Pokémon for breeding and you can choose to make a sandwich with Egg-Power to make it even easier to get and hatch egg. So no I hope they let this be a thing so I do not need to travel to collect a Pokémon from a nursary...I can just have my specific Pokémon ready to make some egg and when I am done I just stop and get back my team again.
@emperorcubone
@emperorcubone Жыл бұрын
Being "in any location" is pointless if you're only allowed to do one thing in that location; they might as well all be the same spot if there are no other capabilities outside of eggs. And if I need to play a sandwich minigame beforehand to make it easier, that doesn't exactly make it "easy" does it? I'll give you that remote access to withdrawing eggs or Pokemon would be nice, but those limitations aren't any worse then an overall pause button...
@Skrattmas
@Skrattmas Жыл бұрын
@@emperorcubone But to be fair...When anyone is hatching eggs they do just that until they don't want to anymore. So in a way you do pause what else you do weather you are in a daycare or not. This is just another way to not need specific places to go to just to fix with eggs. Now you just open up Picnic and fix with it rather than locking yourself to a location with a nursary. And not needing to talk to a NPC to get your eggs feels, for me better. Do I say the Picnic-Way is flawless? No but it is in my opinion a step in the right direction of independence in when you want to choose to breed Pokémon and when you want to do something else. In Sword and Shield you could get only one egg at the time and then wait and then another etc to get eggs. Now with some patience (Which you need anyway with breeding for specific Pokémon like shinies) you can get 5+ egg at the same time. That to me is great. I only see one downside and that is that I can't access my box DURING Picnic but need to pack up and then go to box to do stuff if I forgot stuff with my Pokémon. Otherwise I do love not to be locked to a location to get my eggs.

And yes to character customization coming back! I get that Scarlet/Violet had a unifrom, and in theory that's cool, but somehow I wish they had come up with a way to make them more unique. At least let me take the tie off and look a little rebelious.

you probably were the only person who left the eggs on the nurseries and left the area, most people just ride by the area until the egg was laid. just as now with the picnic like... the change is non existent, they just made it passive so you can leave to do something else in real life and let them breed

sure... but that doesn't explain how that's better than doing it passively in Both the real world and game? You can leave to do something in life now, when before you do that, or leave in the game itself, so how are less options better?

@@emperorcubone egg chances were based not on time spent on the nursy but the number of steps you took, and in the case of SwSh you also had to be away enough to allow the nursery to be reloaded by the game. The only way you could afk while breeding was by literally putting something to automatize your movement. now with the current method you literally just leave and within less than a minute you already get eggs. I've gotten 10 without waiting more than a minute or using food for that matter. It's not hard and it's not time consuming, unlike before when trying to get eggs for shiny hatenna that took me hours and hours of walking, piling up eggs, sure i was opening eggs at the same time and that felt like accelerating the process but eggs do hatch within the basket too without moving. That's an improvement.

Honestly there’s so many things under this umbrella. To give a few examples: -follow Pokémon -regional gimmicks -gts/wonder trade -affection bonuses -exp share -general technical performance -evil teams -victory roads -many, many more

If I'm honest, I don't think that an "evil team" is always needed. IMO, Team Skull was one of the best of them, simply because it was a bunch of unruly teens who wanted to mess up others' island challenges. You know, something that teens tend to do. I think keeping it more on the lowkey side with Team *insert name* is probably healthier for the game overall on the condition that the rest of the story feels involving enough. But maybe that's still Team Flare's plans of basically creating some sort of global annihilation of anyone outside of their group still leaving a sour aftertaste in my mouth ever since.

Yeah, I'd rather just deal with the Poke Mafia, or troublemaking teens, than "We're going to destroy the world because it's not beautiful enough", or "I'm going to create a pocket dimension with just me in it, because I can't stand other people".

It isn't always needed but we haven't really gotten one since gen 3. Having an actual enemy every now and then would be nice instead of the "bad guys" just being regular teenagers and your rival just being some friendly nerd.

@@emperorcubone If it helps anything, according to some (hopefully real) leaks, Team Flare was originally way different, more similar to Men in Black. The fact that they ended up the way they did in the final game is probably due to time constraints or something.

I will praise the Wild Area in Shield when it comes to early ice type access. At the first wild area, it was snowing for me there within the first three gyms and I managed to catch a Snorunt, and as soon as I could access the next segment of the Wild Area to pick up a Dawn Stone, I had myself a Froslass - a sure help against Allister and vital team member. Essentially, if there’s a weather/season system, snow or hail should bring out a few ice types for us to catch.

The way to offset the EXP share is not to train only one Pokémon at a time, it's to train more than just a single team of six. I mean, seriously, there are over 1000 Pokémon now, sticking to the same team of only six for an entire playthrough makes less sense than ever. With EXP share a player can easily train a dozen or more Pokémon, rotating the active members of their team as they go along.
