People say Nagoya's a boring city - but is that true? There's actually lots to do there - the video includes well-know, famous places as well as less well known, hidden gems! It's very quick and easy to get to Nagoya on the bullet train - it's on the main shinkansen line between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, so it's a convenient location to add to your Japan trip. There's lots to do in the city, and it's also a good stopover before heading to Gifu, Takayama or the Japanese alps.

i just spent 6 days in nagoya and i agree -- nagoya is NOT boring. there are loads of things to do there! but i wish i saw this video first, cuz i missed a bunch of options that i could have added to the list! next time, as i only visited 1/3 of ghibli park, so i'll be back.

Thanks for the video, Nagoya was definitely included in my next Japan trip. I honestly prefer places that go unter the radar or are considered "boring" to tourists, I think there you can enjoy Japan the best and most authentic way.

Absolutely agree! You can have such a better experience if you go somewhere less crowded. I'm sure more people would want to visit destinations beyond Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka if only they knew more about them!

This video came just in time. Going on my first trip to japan in 2 weeks and also visiting nagoya (mainly for the ghibly park) and staying for 2 nights. Really looking forward to exploring nagoya and those really cool recommendations. Hi Amy, great video about Nagoya. I finally ordered the "Your Guide to Japan" book. It will come in handy in my coming travels to Japan. Me and my wife are going to Yokohama in November. We're staying at Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel in Shin-Yokohama, it's a highrise building with great view to Tokyo. I'm looking forward to read your book and find things to see as we're new to Japan, it's only our third visit, all to Tokyo. As we learn more about Japan we will travel around the country for sure. That Night-time Factory Boat-Tour would be right up my street. It would also be interesting in Tokyo and Osaka, with all their man-made islands.

The two Toyota museums, Toyota Automobile Museum in Nagakute (subway trains to the Linimo line), and the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology (Sako station on Meitetsu Line, a couple stops from Nagoya station). Seeing some of Toyota's history from loom maker to car builder between the two places.

Great video, exactly the kind of information I've been looking for. I made my first Japan trip earlier this year and Nagoya was one of the places I skipped due to its "boring" reputation, but now I've started planning for the future and hope to add Nagoya to future travel plans!

We are actually planning something similar to the end of the video (Kurobe Gorge, Takayama, Kanazawa, etc.). It's my partner's first time in Japan so we still wanted to start in Tokyo, but we plan to avoid the hordes in Osaka and Kyoto completely this time around. We were going to make Nagano the first stop but this video convinces me that this city seems more our thing. Even though I'm not really into the Akhihabra/gatchapon/etc. side of Japan, your videos still helped me out a lot too back when I went the first time in 2018.

Just been to Nagoya for the first time and have been quite impressed. I particularly liked the Endoji Shotengai shopping street, so much character! I also did trip out to the pottery town of Tokoname as well as a daytrip to Gifu and the onsen town of Gero. Will definitely be staying longer next time as there is so much more to see and do.

On my two week Japan trip next year, I'm really excited for my couple days around Nagoya. One day is for Nagashima Spa Land park and onsen. The other is for Inuyama just north of the city where they have one of the few remaining historic castles high atop a hill and a huge open air architectural museum with a Frank Lloyd Wright building.

❤I I'm just here to say that I've trawled KZfaq for weeks watching almost everything I can with regard to Nagoya trying to make up my mind on whether to visit or not I have to say that this clip the format and the information you shared here knocked it out of the park by a country mile . I think the only positive thing to come out of the JR pass price increase is that more tourists might visit these types of cities, when normally they would just zoom past them on the shinkansen to Kyoto.

On our trip we stayed in Kyoto and did a day trip to Nagoya for the Ghibli park and a baseball game. With the 45 min train from Kyoto it was great to be able to not have to change hotels and still experience Nagoya. Now you have us wanting to go back 😂

Just came back from Nagoya and watched your video! There are a lot of things in my bucket list!!! I would add eat miso ramen, and then lunch at Ootoya, a hedalthy teishoku chain! Didnt go to Ghibli park on this trip, i went when it wss just “Mei adn Satsuki conmemorative old house for Nagooys exhibition” and loved it. Guess ill wait until they organize better the tickets offer. There is as well a Disney, Ghibli and Rilakkuma store at Nagoya eki to get nice stuff! Thanks for the video!!!!

So glad you enjoyed Nagoya! Ootoya is on my list, as they have vegetarian teishoku options (rare!) and I'd love to try a traditional home-cooked style meal like that.

I was planning to go to the Studio Ghibli Park while I'm staying in Nagoya for nearly a week in April, but since I was working when the tickets went on sale, by the time I had a chance to buy them, the day I'd planned had sold out for the Premium Pass. However this has been helpful to think of ideas of things to do in Nagoya now that I have a day there with nothing major planned.

I'm Japanese so I'm familiar with the Co Co Curry shops, but I didn't know that it originated in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya until I watched this video. As always, thank you for your accurate introduction to Japanese things.

@@cakeswithfaces Japanese short lesson: "Coco" (or "koko" in Roma-ji spelling) means "here" in English, and the shop’s full name is ”Koko ichiban ya" in Roma-ji so: Koko ichiban ya = Koko + ichiban + ya = Koko (Here) + ichiban (Number one) + ya (Shop) = Here + Number one + Shop = "Here is the best restaurant (where) if you (want to) eat curry." Makes sense, right? English speakers often call the shop Coco Curry (or simply Coco in short) as you do and it sounds "Here Curry" to me btw :)

Nagoya is also famous for their Tebasaki chicken wings.. my favorite chicken of all time.. Yamachan, Tsubasaya, Furaibo chains are good places to get them all over Japan

Yes, the Hozugawa Cruise is definitely coming up at some point, I don't have a schedule of when it'll be, but I'm looking forward to editing the video! Are you planning on going on it soon? I'd definitely recommend it - lots of people love the Sagano Romantic Train, but in my opinion the cruise is even better!

@@stuartstripling3495 There'll definitely be fewer people in that area. Take a look on Google Streetview, the Saga Torimoto preserved street and alleyways around there are lovely. Most people go to the bridge, bamboo forest and monkey park so if you wander away from that area you can find some calmer spots. If you wander into the Arashiyama Park Kameyama Area (it's on Google Maps) or even through the paths after the main part of the bamboo forest, it's a lot quieter as most people don't go wandering and exploring, they just get their photos in the forest and leave!

It's open year-round, and different flowers bloom at different times of the year.

Unfortunately Nagashima onsen (mentioned in the video) doesn't allow tattoos. It's quite rare that they do - although there are lists online of tattoo-friendly onsen, like this one: travel.gaijinpot.com/japan-sightseeing-essentials/30-tattoo-friendly-onsen-in-japan/ Or, if you stay in a ryokan that lets you use the bath privately, that's usually ok.

Compared to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, Nagoya is less well known. But I don't think the charm of Nagoya is small at all. Nagoya gourmet is called "Nagoya-Meshi". And, Cafe culture has taken root in Nagoya, so visiting the cafes is fun.

Be careful if you're going to Nabana No Sato. Even if it's part of Nagashima Spa Resort which also owns Nagashima Spa Land, Nabana No Sato is the only of those establishments that DOEST NOT accept credit cards, IC cards or any form of payment except cash. I know it's Japan but it's nuts that a place like that only takes cash taking also into account that the entrance fee isn't that cheap either.

Thanks for the tip. It's always a good idea to carry more cash than you usually would on a trip, when you're going to Japan, just in case!
