this is the first KZfaq video I cut fully in resolve...
I see a lot of pincushion distortion and inaccurate aspect ratios with footage shot on anamorphic lenses these days. if you do the things I mention in this video you may notice an improvement to elusive cinematic look we all chase. also, wise to put the proper frame line on your camera monitor. hit me up with any questions and join the discord: / discord
also rotating anamorphic lenses sideways on the camera is kind of cool. try it!
footage in this video was shot on the arri alexa mini LF in open gate, with the great joy 50mm 1.8x anamorphic lens. edited and color graded in davinci resolve

I used the bulge tool for years before trying lens correction in resolve. There is also lens correction in fusion. They are all similar, but usually one comes out on top for each different lens.

We are in an amazing time for cinematography! With the current offerings from camera manufacturers, we’re able to mount lenses which ever way we wish and dial in aspect ratio while still being able to deliver within specification. For example, I’m able to leverage the larger-than-S35 image circles of the CookeMiniS4s by shooting 8K with the R5C and export in 4K DCI with pleasing results.

Always very value content! Just love shooting horizontal with the anamorphics. Gives you this 4:3 vibe and 9:16 is also cool! Actually in Davinci you can just create a vertical timeline, calculate your horizontal pixels times your anamorphic desqueeze (for example 1.5x) and then tick the box for aspect ratio (1.5x) in your Clip details. Drag it in the timeline and done. No need for playing with the scales.
@BlaineWestropp1
@BlaineWestropp1 10 ай бұрын
Thank you! Will need to test this, but isn’t the squeeze in resolve only working for when the lens is mounted properly? I’ll have to test. When I was shooting the footage came in desqueezed bc I left it on in camera.
@RicoStein_
@RicoStein_ 10 ай бұрын
@@BlaineWestropp1 to make it work you have to shoot vertically but mount the lens normally (horizontally), also to keep the horizontal flares and bokeh. For example: Shooting in 4k vertically (2160x3840) with an 1.5x anamorphic lens, you will end up in a pixel ratio of 3240x3840. When you create the vertical timeline with this ratio and tick the desqueeze box of your clip (1.5x) it will automatically desqueeze it correctly when you drag it into the timeline. I hope my explanation can be understood correctly :) This is an example for 16:9 sensors. If you have a 3:2 sensor and shoot vertically with a 2x anamorphic lens, then you end up with a 4:3 image, which is even nicer actually!

great info as always :) I also discovered recently that some s35 anamorphics will cover the 1:1 area on the mini LF which creates a cool 2:1 ratio with 2x lenses, and opens up a lot of different lens options! Recently did this with the Lomo round fronts and it created a really fun look

Always a pleasure. Aviascope 1.5 twisted to create square image is nice too. Anamorphic focus breathing just one reason why deakins dislikes them. Tested the cooke anamorphics and couldn’t believe the barrel distortion on verticals in interiors like a car park or walking down corridors. As you said normal correction does some odd things to the centre sometimes. No idea why anyone would want that. Hawk hybrid x1.3 anamorphics are popular choice for netfljx 2.1 ratio. Same characteristics across 35 and full frame, even a 16mm version. They have great close focus and are super compact. Thx as always.

Deakins like the true to life approach. Likely based on his start in the doc world. I also think this could be due to large budgets. Keep the image clean. Anamorphic can be distracting, but, I do like it. Also, Cookes in my experience have very much pincushion. I need to try the aivascope. I’ve seen some beautiful images from the aivascope. Maybe I get my hands on one soon…
@KenFlanagan
@KenFlanagan 10 ай бұрын
@@BlaineWestropp1 agreed! Guess deakins has always hated artifice but ironically when shooting docs anamorphic was the first thing i went for and actually twisted the element during the shot( it was an adapter on a taking lens so weirdly the shot would go from out of focus and twist into focus. Used sparingly it worked well. I was definitely into making custom set ups back then and adding elements to existing lens) And thinking about it deakins is know for his deakiniser lens. btw i love anamorphic too and tilt shift (canon range seem very underused) bits of stocking or glass (lensbaby) on lens even lens wacking but these days its so easy to do so much in post. I remember shooting on film cameras with a massive bellows tilt shift lens way back when over 30 years ago and it was amazing. Very much like the deakiniser but i guess thats a good example of convergent evolution but using quite different processes though the creative results are surprisingly similar as an effect. Surprisingly intuitive to adjust the image plane with a bellows device. Like a 10x8 large format camera. That is exactly what the aviascope images squared up remind me of. Very paolo roversi. Guess that was the inspiration for using it. Guess i slightly ODed on that look but it still works. I think you’ll like the aviascope twisted up as a square frame for sure. I think in reality because of post a lot of these more analog optical lens affects do need idata to be part of the design at the high end but there’s a debate i guess about how naturalistic or abstracted any image should be. Any effect is signposting intent and it’s interesting to see anamorphic as an affect rather than a simple way to get a wider frame say as a 21mm but have the distortion characteristics of a 42mm so a lot easier on the face especially in two shots. As always a very timely and excellent post. Thx again.

One thing I would recommend for 4K timelines that are scope is to consider using the DCI spec resolutions (4096 x 1716 for scope for example). It's an official scope spec so you won't run into strange cropping issues down the road if you end up delivering to other platforms like streaming, svod etc. Excellent demo of the cool things you can do with rotating the lens.

Thanks for the video. You didn't warn that this lens has a “feature”. breathing anamorphic ratio, which shifts from 1.8 to ~1.68 (if I'm not mistaken). And it depends on how close or far away the object of your focus is. It seems to me that this is a big minus for those who like to shoot objects that move. In general, this can create problems in post-production.
@BlaineWestropp1

If you were to pickup your first couple of cine primes Blaine, would you get a set of Great Joy anamorphics or similar, or a set of affordable spherical? I loved the look of these lenses but I was going to buy DZO/IRIX as my first cine glass. I am having a hard time deciding anamorphic or spherical (I have good photo/AF glass already). I adore your channel.
@BlaineWestropp1
@BlaineWestropp1 10 ай бұрын
Hey thanks! I like anamorphic. Also like spherical. Anamorphic is good in only one scenario, when you get approved to shoot it. Spherical can be used for anything. So if you had one lens set, and wanted to use that set on a variety of projects, I’d go spherical then do anamorphic for 2nd set. But if you have spherical that you can use, try out anamorphic! I like the dzo vespids and they are my most recommended set to buy. Great look. Great price, solid lenses.
