In Episode 411 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren Devivo dis-cuss the newly restored version of Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 “Let It Be,” and how it got its bad reputation, and how it looks now; the just announced “Mind Games” archival release, due in July, and Ringo Starr’s virtual press conference on May 15. [For listeners looking for specific topics, the first part of the show is devoted to the News, with “Let It Be” discussion starting at 33 minutes, the overview of the “Mind Games” reissue (and formats) beginning at 1 hour 33 minutes, and the report on Ringo’s press conference getting underway at 1 hour 52 minutes. Yeah, it’s a long one, but think of it as three shows in one!]

The thoughts of LIB being a movie that the Beatles called sad, the breakup of the band, etc., is like what John said about Pepper being a concept album. “It worked because we “said” it worked.” So “LIB was “sad,” because they said it was.

41:13 As Allan says the original film came out at the time of the breakup followed by the Lennon Rolling Stone interview where he says he cried when watching it. So it was seen as depicting a band in terminal crisis and hence depressing. Paul then cited Klein's interference in the recording of Long and Winding Road in the court case although this was long after filming. I read also in the nineties somewhere that Ringo had looked at the Let it Be material and found it too depressing. So Let it Be always had a bad feeling about it. However as Allan points out the real tension in the band really got going during Abbey Road and viewed today the Let it Be and Get Back films are quite upbeat, depicting a band remarkably cohesive after so many years together.

So this is interesting, I just checked John’s store for the super duper deluxe box of Mind Games and it’s still available in the USA. It no longer has a countdown of available units. It looks like Universal is exceeding that 1100 number.

I think they went into 1969 feet running simply because Paul already had new songs and the Beatles were his outlet for them. They had their Christmas break and I’m sure Paul was anxious to keep things going. As far as the “argument” in Let It Be, yes it wasn’t a big deal but you could tell it wasn’t the first time George was getting annoyed with Paul. Paul brings up Hey Jude but just as an example. There has to be more times because Paul is saying you always think I’m out to get you and I’m not. And George at one point responds you don’t annoy me anymore Paul. And we know in Get Back when the scene continues Paul is basically saying I don’t like being the boss. So while the scene itself in Let It Be was overblown, it was a symptom of a larger issue for George

I remember that there was a different version of Two of Us. Paul did not play the intro the way that it ended up on the album. I’m positive that when, in the movie, it’s a staged scene like they are making a video…Paul leaves a note out of each bar in the intro. Then by the end of the movie Paul plays it like the record. So, like Allan said it’s not the original release. I for one liked the original movie print better, it’s was a bad movie that should have been shelved, so the grainy aspect makes it appropriate. I do appreciate the remixing on the sound of course and who wouldn’t. You know it was a debacle when it came out and in my opinion it still is. They should have put a DVD of it in the Super Deluxe release which would have been much better than releasing it after Get Back. I mean when you break it down, the only thing to like about it is the remaster of sound and vision. I bought LIB when I was six in 1970 when it came out and I loved the album. I prefer the LIB album release much better than the single version. That guitar solo was killer, it made that song powerful. The single version with the organ starting the solo break really felt like a let down. I prefer the version of Across the Universe better than any other version it. I know most people don’t feel that way. As far as the Mind Games release goes or any other Beatles or Solo Beatles thing goes there shouldn’t be anything that is limited. I mean they should make enough for everyone instead of catering to the Discogs/ EBay generation. They should make enough free r the demand. YES I TOO WISH THAT LEGACY PART TWO NEEDS TO COME OUT NOW!!!!!!

Only a moron would shine further light on a moronic theory that John was killed as part of a conspiracy. You want proof ? He had no influence. Double fantasy was slipping down the charts the night of his murder. Cia and Ronald Reagan could care less about Lennon or his politics. And Lennon wholeheartedly voted for Ronald Reagan and contributed to his campaign. They met in 1974 and Reagan gave Lennon career advice

Just a thought but I think the reason they didn’t touch the white album songs for let it be. Was because of the record deal Brian Epstein had made back in 1967 that stipulated 70 new tracks I think ? George Martin felt the reason the white album was a double was because the Beatles were trying to get out of the EMI contract by producing as many tracks as possible. Perhaps Paul sold the project to the others by saying if it’s all new stuff we will be closer to getting out of that record deal ?

It’s madness to hold McCartney legacy until December. Why does Allan kozinn and his publishers not release it now ? It’s ridiculous Mind games is an underrated gem. Almost as good as ringo and band on the run. Out of the blue is underrated. A lot of negativity on Lennon output. 1985 and no words are bottom of barrel tracks. Intuition and only people are superior tracks

@@allankozinn192 the idea of you even editing out chunks of the masterpiece or counting words to fulfill some clueless half witted socialite editors so called expected length is ridiculous. What is this 1983 ? It’s silly. Your clueless book publisher doesn’t know your core audience. Your book publisher is a moron for touching any of Adrian’s or your product. Sinclair should be and ought to be outraged if you edit out his material

@@allankozinn192 you should be self publishing. You don’t need an editor. You and mark lewisohn operate as if it’s the 1980s. Or 1880s. Do you write with quail pens too ? You should not be editing a single semi colon out of this draft. You and Sinclair should be on patreon. You should all be adding material not editing material. You and your clueless book publishers are operating as if it’s fourty years ago for an audience that wants more detail on a timely basis. My god you are virtually clueless if you’re even taking content out of volume ii. Especially that rich McCartney period. A shame you listen to some unqualified Jackie Onassis socialite half witted editor. It was an advertising campaign for peace as John Lennon cried to the journalist in imagine circa 1969. You taking out a single paragraph McCartney content is a grave crime against humanity

You have a good show but need to shorten Ken Womack’s news segment 35 minutes of stuff that really doesn’t belong on a Let It Be discussion and barely relevant ton a Beatles stream

Hi Dave, it's Ken Michaels here, and I do the news segment. If you check the description box, we tell you when the main topic(s) start, so you can skip the news if you like. The news has been a part of our show since its inception in 2012. What did you find wasn't relevant for Beatles fans in this news segment?

It’s Ken Michaels not Ken Womack. Ken Womack is a charlatan who writes lousy and unreadable biographies. His bio of George Martin was ooorly researched and virtually unlistenable. Ken Womack is a sleaze ball on par with Geoffrey guiliano.

If you have been watching the podcast for a while you'd see that it is pretty well rounded. You would also see that there are several times when things get tilted toward Lennon and Ono, Ringo and George get the same treatment. It depends on the episode and the subject matter. I have found myself thinking that sometimes each member gets praised for things that I feel are not that great but there again the point of the podcast is opinion based. 99% of the time the facts are correct. I don't always agree with all three of them and nobody will but I feel after many years of watching (8 years) that the show isn't biased toward anyone.

With respect, in what way is there a bias on this podcast in favor of Mccartney? Historically, it cam be argued that there has been an anti Mccartney bias, and present day discourse amongst many Beatle commentary is redressing the balance. I see no Mccartney favoritism in this podcast.
