The word DIY, Life Hack, and Reuse are thrown around these days on clickbaity videos. This.... This is THE video that defines the DIY spirit properly. Actual useful items that you would ACTUALLY need, made using recycled product. Bravo, sir.

I was lucky - for the most part I left things working... BUT... I only fixed, this guy re-purposes.... But yeah, even aged 8 I'd be stripping down an Acorn Electron or a BMW 328... give me a spanner and a screwdriver and 3 hours... I'm a menace! But things are usually better than worse after. Now I'm 47.... pfffff...... I have rooms full of trash - old laptops, dead TV's.... broken speakers.... hopefully soon I'll get my magic back and get these things fixed / re-purposed.

I worked at a company that made the acrylic backlights for laptops and things. If you're doing the bear project, try to have the part of the cutout that's against the LEDs be in the same orientation as the original backlight was against its LEDs. The optical pattern on the acrylic has a density gradient so that the light will be more even over the whole surface if you do it that way!

It’s sad that the entire DIY/Hacks niche has been destroyed by fake videos by outlets like 5 Minute Crafts and KZfaq has allowed it even though they supposedly ban misinformation in their agreements The only thing KZfaq cares about is money. Not quality We really need more competition in the tech industry. Breaking big companies into smaller ones would make things a lot better

@@andrenal3609 i actually do computer repair as my job... yeah, customers suck sometimes, but when i am brought a broken computer, i am EXTREMELY happy, because i don't see a broken computer, or a dickhead customer... i see dollar signs, which means food, and rent, and fuel. for a lot of repair techs, it's just a job. I really like that pencil sharpener idea because as an artist I have several sets of pencils that are best sharpened (in part, like the lead core part in this process I use a blade to remove the wooden casing) with a sandpaper board. I'm pretty sure my old hd still works but when it craps I'll keep this in mind. Also thanks for the rest of this video, I have had this old dead laptop sitting around for a while now not knowing what to do with it.
@ConorFenlon
@ConorFenlon 4 жыл бұрын
Be careful when re-using laptop battery cells. It's extremely important to check the internal resistance, self-discharge rate, remaining capacity, and whether or not they heat up when charging. I re-purpose li-ion cells from old laptop batteries all the time, and have tested probably 250+ cells at this point. The last thing you should do is just stick it in a charger if the voltage is still "good" without properly testing the cell first for safety. I had a few Sanyo cells the other day, took them out of the pack, checked the voltage. 3.86V. I though "Great! These are still good!", that is, until I ran them through a Liitokala Engineer lii-500 to check their remaining capacity...During the initial charge cycle the temperature SHOT up at ~4V. They must have been 75 degrees C or more, I could barely handle them. So please, if you're reading this, be careful. While the majority of old cells MAY be safe, it's imperative to check them first before re-use. Imagine you gave a power bank to your little brother/sister or cousin and later found out they were burned or worse? Take the precaution of checking them properly, it's so important guys.

The reason that commercial security systems tend to look awful are due to storage constraints rather than the cameras themselves. A company may need to store weeks or even months of 24 hour footage, and video takes up more space as quality increases. The kind of capacity needed for that is expensive even for businesses, especially considering one building may have dozens or even *hundreds* of security cameras, all recording at once, non-stop.

I don't think that's "legal" (depends on where you live), Windows OEM License, the one that comes preinstalled with the device, is supposed to be usable only for that particular device, non transferable. But may still be able to be used and activated in other devices if you try, though this will be "grey" in legal context. Unless we're talking about windows Retail/FPP license we bought separately from the device, that will come in handy since we have the right to transfer the license to other devices.

@@HAWXLEADER problem is the protocol. I can't remember if it was this guy but there was a video about reusing old laptop cameras, the camera itself uses 4 wires that actually follow USB protocol so you can even plug it into a regular computer USB. Cell phone cameras, however, have a completely different set of protocols, both hardware and software with many different pinouts and methods of connecting to a host device. Some cameras like the one for the Google Pixel have sufficient documentation and even have interface boards, however you'll need to do a lot of research to find which one will work. In addition, if you're using it as a USB type webcam then you may be limited by the speed of the USB protocol itself. This is why some cameras for high demand applications (think industrial and manufacturing uses like machine vision) use "Ethernet" cables because of the higher bandwidth and greater reliability.

@@pleaseadjustyourtracking6330 I used IP webcam for a few weeks on an older phone and the device kept overheating, bugging out and eventually turning off. After just those few weeks (few hours a day usage) my battery life went down to one fifth of what it used to be. Its possible to use smartphone cameras as webcams, but in general they were not designed to be used for longer periods, especially while the phone is transmiting that video feed. Newer phones could probably handle it better than my old galaxy S6, but you should still be careful.

Small improvement on the laser view meter: Mount the entire hard-drive on a small fan that you voluntarily force to vibrate. Either brake one of the fan blade or glue some weight. This will create the vertical scan while the music is still displayed as an horizontal line. The effect is similar to using a scope but nicer because the scan is symmetrical. What you see is nice Lissajous figures depending on the frequency content of the music.

120 thumbs up, my most popular comment on youtube. My first experience of a similar way to display music was using an old color TV. There was still a few vacuum tube, in particular a large one with metal cap on top to rectify 25 kv and a bigger one for pulsing at 15 KHz to produce horizontal scan an the high voltage +25 kv. The CRT was 26 inches, diagonal. It was the old style with the phosphor being dots, not vertical stripes. It used dynamic convergence with 3 electromagnets close to the deflection 'yoke'. A PCB with 16 adjustable resistors allowed to adjust how much current is used to stir each color mostly near the 4 corners. I disconnected both horizontal and vertical wire from the yoke (like the science fiction pretend: don't adjust your tv, we control the horizontal and vertical... I used a 6 volt transformer, connected it on the horizontal wires of the yoke. I connected the vertical to an amplifier, in parallel with the speaker. Result: Same as with this laser, except: because of the dynamic convergence, trying to force the red, green and blue to center, the 3 colors were separated but followed similar path. The music was illustrated with these 3 intense, saturated, colors. Using a more recent CRT, we need to use magnets near the neck to force the color to separate. Otherwise, the convergence is so good that we just see a more boring white trace. It is hard to keep the color saturated in every parts of the screen. Modern CRT are just too good at keeping the 3 colors well aligned with the shadow mask.

Whenever I get my hands on an old computer, I usually just clean it up, replace the thermal compound, replace the HDD, and put a light "windows-like" Linux distro on it, such as LXLE. If I'm in an extra good mood, and it is a desktop, I might put in like a GT 710 or an HD 6450. Then I either give them to literally anyone I know who needs a PC, or donate them.

My grandmothewr gave me an old laptop of hers that I noticed was broken. I'm actually attempting to reuse the LCD screen to have another screen monitor, this gave me more ideas on what to do with the rest of the components :)
