How much do you recommend for a retainer of your total fee for the service. I know it might depend on the service but is it a percentage of your total for the specific service? By the way, just starting out and you're very informative. Thanks for the videos and the guide.

My retainer is based on the service I offer. For instance, for my "premium Micro-wedding packages" that include officiant, decor, photography, or a combination of those, the retainer is $300. For my elopement packages that include an officiant and photography, the retainer is $200. For all of my "officiant only" packages, the retainer is $100. Some people ask for a percentage and some ask for 50%. Whatever way serves you best. With mine the retainer is paid (retainer is typically 1/3 of the total balance) to reserve the date. Then the remaining balance must then be paid two weeks before the wedding. An auto payment is set up so it automatically gets paid.

Cool. I ask for money the first time I speak with them, AFTER I qualify that they are my kind of people.

I would not take that chance if they don’t agree with the contract you have to refund.

@@therookiefisherman5234 👍. Everyone's system will be a little different in this area. In my experience, in over a decade I've never had issues with this part of it. The Discovery call or initial meeting covers my basic contract terms, and my contract is very uncomplicated and only has six, very easy to understand terms. Over the years, I've learned that giving the couple another shot to decide they don't want to go with you, at any point in the sales process, is a bad idea. After the discovery call, I've obtained their deposit and both they and I understand what our individual responsibilities are and all of the next steps in the process. There's also a lot of value in sending them a guide that shows your process and everything that's covered. By doing this I show more value than most other officiants in my area and their decision to go with me remains. The questions I ask in our first conversation will tell me whether they're my kind of couple or not and from the questions I ask, I'll know whether or not they will have issues with the physical contract, because it's been covered. It's good to do what works for you, and I enjoy discussing topics that can help someone figure out their policies and systems. Thanks for bringing up this topic!
