A lot of people don't know but Capoeira also has headbutts, knee strikes and even throws, the bjj "baiana" was taken from Capoeira. It also has some weapons, the most popular being the "navalha".

In other capoeira styles/systems they have the black ropes and red corded ropes as the highest ranks as similar to bjj. Maestro Amen Santo comes from a capoeira corda rope ranking system that has its own originality which is varied and slightly different. Btw great interview on “Only the Strong” a movie classic that revealed to the public the skill-fullness, power dynamics, and beauty of this fascinating Afro-Brazilian martial art. It one of the first capoeira films that succeed in doing so.

5:44 I taught myself JKD, peekaboo boxing and I think I understand Muhammad Ali style of fighting I think; Ali said it best when he said he sticks and moves, sidesteps, all the while slipping punches and pulling his head back. I’ve also try to incorporate Capoeira into my JKD. And what I love about Capoeira is that it is not a stationary stance. The stance is called a jinga a combination of a side step and backward lunge continuously while blocking your face with your forearms, and I personally know that I would Jinga in an MMA fight instead of having a stationary JKD , boxing stance, or karate or Muaythai stance because I know I want to be a moving target because it is harder to hit. Jkd uses epee or fencing footwork movement with Muhammad Ali’s boxing footwork and so if I’m not doing the jinga I would be side stepping or circling my opponent sticking and moving probably using my sidekick

@ Viking Samurai, David, I don't know if you would or wouldn't be interested. But if you'd ever revisit Capoeira again, I have a friend, Mestre Sucuri, here with me in Tokyo who is a Mestre (master). As a foreigner who has made Japan his home, his school (Capoeira Zoador) has been operating for 24 years here. I also know another Capoeirista, Benjamin Moriniere, who owns a dojo (Moriniere Martial Arts Academy) in Okinawa and teaches MMA, Kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in addition to Capoeira. Your interview with Mestre Amen Santo was excellent, and he already seems to have covered or given an excellent overview of Capoeira. You may not need to interview my guys. My guys are obviously not movie stars, either. But if you want to get back to roots and interview some martial artists, I'm recommending my guys because it is a big thing to operate a dojo as a business in a foreign land that's not your own. I think they would make for good interviews. Please feel free to reach out if you are ever interested. -Marc

Great interview. Cant wait for the next part(s)! I think its fascinating how he spoke about Ali and dancing. Movement is so important because it helps set up rhythm. We all know JCVDs history with balet, but also Jason Scott Lee was chosen to play Bruce Lee in Dragon because of his dancing background. They felt his mobility was best suit for jeet kune do. Another fighter right now that has a background in balet is Vasily Lomachenko. His fluidity is a beauty to watch.

No, hands were not usually chained because people were working in the fields, or engaged in crafts, or working or doing deliveries in an urban setting. I believe people were mostly shackled by the neck when they were tied up.

@@Greatsport99 To be honest with you well you are wright about cardio, balance and coordination but Capoeira it's a Brazilian Martial Art and Dance. It was created by African slaves, sold and brought by slave ships to Brazil, to defend themselves against their "owners" and their henchmen. Capoeira is a form of fighting using la Jinga, acrobatics, wheels, somersaults, to defend oneself. it's quite handy for street fighting.

You need to do more research if you think Capoeira isn't effective in real life. The fact that it was developed by slaves to fight their capturers should be enough, but I assume because you don't see it used in a controlled environment like a MMA match you think it doesn't have any real world applications.

It depends on who you are regardless of the martial art. If one is a deluded fool who’s not trained properly long enough and has ideas of grandeur is clearly gonna have his ass kicked. Why good discipleship in every discipline is crucial and not just training techniques. I’ve personally learnt that Capoeira isn’t even about the movements. The best Capoeiristas never rely on their brawn.

In Capoeira they roll on the ground and do a move called " role". Its a way to move on the ground, it looks like an around the world in break dancing footwork. As u roll, u reach a v legged push up position where u can do a back kick at the opponent or a mea lua using that tiny bit if momentum from the role. From role u can do a roundhouse from the floor. I think fight science measured lateef crowders role to roundhouse power. Amazing how even in modern day martial artists dont want to admit their style is inaffective. Anyways its the role to different strikes that gives people false confidence that this style wirks irl based on a couple kicks that work ina slow paced non contact friendly cooperative game of capoeira.
@kendalgee5808
@kendalgee5808 Жыл бұрын
To answer ur question. its a game, when someone throws a spinning heel kick, you get closer, before it hits u in the face, cuz u moved closer, u duck, it goes over ur head, u go with it, & fire a spinning heel kick in the same direction. So a beautiful COOPERATIVE flow of spinning heel kicks between 2 opponents barely missing each other. If i throw armada, u throw one in the same direction, if i throw mea lua, etc, etc. It is disguised as a dance that pretends to be a style that works irl. it only works in the circle cuz everyone plays by the same rules, everyone does the genga, everyone wants to play a beautiful cooperative game " jogo" so its a delusional safe place or circle if they think it works irl. Really disappointed how hw danced around ur question about its real life effectiveness.
@kendalgee5808
@kendalgee5808 Жыл бұрын
I saw the the way he danced around ur question about does it work in real life. I am leaving multiple comments to amswer ur question as an insider myself of capoeira of 10 years. His analogy of muhamid ali were false logic. Ali was affective, cuz boxing is an art that actually works irl, so he can dance around. Bruce lee could dance around, cuz he was deadly as a martial artist as a person. But Capoeira diesnt work irl, so dancing around is a false analogy.

There not practicing anything. Everything he practiced he applied in the movie scene in only the strong, da fuk🤣 that wasnt real life, lol. Everything amen is talking about combat is based around fighting a non martial artist 100 years ago, but in 2023 it is a parody to say it works against modern day mma fighters ir effective irl combat.
@kendalgee5808
@kendalgee5808 Жыл бұрын
Capoeira doesnt work in a real mma fight against trained fighters. The jenga doesnt work & handicaps u in real combat it doesnt fool anyone. This is cringe. I met dacascos & been to Mestre Amens roda at Capoeira Batuque im culver city. An agressive striking jogo "game" of capoeira is just fromt kicks " bencao's" and cheap low roundhouse sweeps for every predictable touch down spinning heel kick " mea lua". It gets really sloppy much like wing chun in real combat. I mastered capoeira for 10 years/ could do mariposa, armada dupla, folha secca, etc. I was high level & did Angola " slow & more combat focused " & regional capoeira. It's great history, culture, music, community, family feel , acrobatics, dance, songs, instruments, and lifestyle. But fighting irl is not one of them. Low level mma fighters may get tagged by 4 mea luas but it wont work in the upper levels. Anderson silva got beat cuz some dood did a flying tesoura to knee bar submission. But that tesoura was a party trick & doesnt mean capoeira works cuz 1 person beat anderson silva with a capoeira move to bjj knee bar. If Capoeira were so great u would see people in ufc doing the ginga, au, & role to mea lua . Irl, a mma fighter against high level mma doing the genga would get packed out doing that triangle pattern. Most capoeiraists do the genga to an armada & pause for 1 second, and freeze like a martial arts pose, but its really cuz capoeira armada is a dance, u need 1 second to conpose yourself, regain balance & back to the ginga. But most people on social media use that 1 second to look exotic, nit realizing thats why it doesnt work. The ginga fools no one & handicaps urself cuz u get stuck in ur own pattern. armada takes too long to recover from, de frente is a joke, multiple rapid fire mea luas against an opponent in the corner may work if the opponent sucks but will gas out the capoeirist . Also the ginga wastes energy in the cage. Its not a liw energy slow angola game, its the cage so ur ginga & movements must be high alert. Its like u hear someone is a capieira master in mma, then u watch their mma fight & see very little capoeira if any. If Anderson silva dies little wing chun traps for 5 seconds against the fence all the wing chun guys go wild as if thats his primary fighting technique. I hope one day capoeira, wing chun, pa kua, hsing i, guys admit their style doent work in the cage. This will get people hurt. Imagine a skinny tai chi guy 5"9 160 pounds thinking he cam beat a 6"2 230 pound buff prison gangster in a street fight using tai chi, wing chun, or capoeira. 🤦🏻
