Keeping my e46 330d touring forever

Bought my 325i new in 2001 and have been driving it ever since. I should be a walking, talking compendium of what can go wrong with these cars, but with normal maintenance, mine's been solid and reliable over 75K miles. It is a dry climate car, which has undoubtedly helped. I did recently replace the front struts and control arm bushings, which restored that sharp handling for which these cars are known.

I would add another point: Do your research on the e46 engines before you choose your model. Some are more likely to fail then others. Overall the 6 cycl. engines are rocksolid to some extent. I bought my 318ci, my second e46, back in spring 2021 with minor rust and some love marks. One year later it drives perfect with the oem m suspension. I would never sell that car. The coupes look sooo good

Check rear subframe for cracks where it bolts to the body.

Main points should have been VANOS/RearSubframe Points/Jackpoints/CCV Lines.

When checking the coolant your comment that it’s inconvenient? Didn’t show a clip of what you’re talking about. Is a not checking when you take the cap off? What do you mean?

I do not wanna be mean but most of the points are not valid at all. Speaking of the rust on panels and such, they are not that hard to fix at all. I consider it a bonus I can haggle more. Same goes for the leather or the knobs or even the coolant. I can find a replacement in minutes. Pet peeves at best. I do think the vanos one is on point, same goes with the over all rust under the body. I do suggest to look for a cracked rear frame support. Or for other more major stuff, a bent frame as well. Engines do play a huge role and a lost of lower powered engines 316 or 318 do have quite a lot of issues from what I saw. And a clean engine bay is not the best sign at all. Many folks like to make the engine bay very clean, this way you wont spot the oil leaks even after a test drive.

I’m looking into a 2005 325i 82k miles for around $8k. The pics look amazing with the classic silver gray and the carfax looks well maintained. Would you recommend it as a first car? I’m not opposed to fixing and learning about the car, but I am worried about the non bmw fans and the maintenance cost that comes with it.

How much would a manual swap cost if a shop did it do you think? I’m wondering if it’s worth it for my car or if I should just sell it and get a manual. My car has 235k but the body is straight and the motor is strong
