HI! Student of culinary arts here! The reason a wooden spoon over a pot stops the boil over is because of black magic. No though, in all serious its two things, the handle is porous which leads to the second thing, it breaks the surface tension of the bubbles. Same reason if you pour a soda/OTHER FOAMY BEV for yourself, and you don't want the foam to run over, rub a finger on your nose and tap it. Oil from your skin breaks the bubbles cohesion and will completely eliminate the foamy head. (Key words FOR YOURSELF. Kinda gross to do it to SOMEONE ELSE drink, but if its YOUR drink, you'll likely get some skin oil in it anyways.)
