Think Twice About Living In South Lyon Michigan - For those of you that aren’t too familiar with South Lyon, this 3.74 square mile city with around 12,000 people is smacked into the middle of Brighton, Milford, Novi, Salem and Whitmore Lake. Not to be confused with Lyon township which is about 32 square miles, with a population of over 21,000 people, South Lyon is located at the west side of the township, and two unincorporated communities: New Hudson and Kensington, which was once a former village, turned metro park make up the majority of the area. South Lyon is known for its charming downtown, schools, quality of life, along with the several annual events and pristine parks that I will chat more about going forward.
If you’re in the southeast Michigan area, it’s fair to say that South Lyon doesn’t get as much hype as it deserves, the city is so often looked over with Brighton and Milford being in such close proximity. I think it has a lot to do with the expressway as you drive past all the city exits, you’re driving along east on I-96 and you pass the Kensington Road exit, then you pass the Kent lake South Lyon exit, and most people think Kent Lake is in Brighton or Green oak township but the majority of it is in Oakland County in Milford and Lyon township, then you hit the New Hudson exit that everyone calls Milford anyone, because it leads to Milford road and takes you right to Milford. That Kent Lake rd. exit is a popular one to follow along to get to the metro park, but if you just take that road and turn onto Pontiac Trail you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in what the city of South Lyon has to offer.

I've lived in SL for over 23 years, it's become over crowded and traffic is terrible. It's no longer the quiet little town anymore.

I've lived in South Lyon my entire life 54 years now my Mom and 4 Aunts born and raised her as well. My Grandmother and her 9 siblings also born and raised here. My family has been here since it was called Thompson's Corners. My Great Uncle Jimmy and Great Aunt Ocel owned Jimmy's Restaurant on the corner of Pontiactrail and 10 mile.its currently now a physical therapy office. I can even remember as a kid and teen being able to ride my bike down the middle of Pontiactrail during the day and i would have more horses go by me then cars. South Lyon was once the Horse capitol of Michigan, and the best part was when you eould visit friends and you eould mention South Lyon no one ever knew where it was or ever heard of it.

I have a story about the burning down of the South Lyon Hotel. So we’re beginning when I was about 7 years old. Me, my mom, my 2 year old brother, and our newborn brother are going to a small park in a subdivision just west of the hotel (it is a restaurant) and maybe a 5 minute walk. We’re playing on the playground when we hear fire trucks start their sirens. And the fire station is like a couple buildings down from it and a 4 minutes walk from us. My mother pointed it out and said that it was odd. I can’t remember much of what happened after that until we heard a helicopter flying overhead and toward the hotel. So we concluded there must be something going on. And as soon as my mother said that a big cloud of smoke was rising into the sky and it started smelling a bit smokey. So my mother said to get in the car to go home. We get home and my dad said let’s go check it out. So we drive by it and it smells horrible. Everything except for a little wall of bricks is turned into ash. So we go home after that and that’s it.

Barbara Lewis was actually from Salem Michigan not South Lyon. Salem is like 4-5 miles grom South Lyon.

The South Lyon Tavern is now Closed down. When i went to South Lyon Schools in the 70's and 80's it sucked.

I grew up in South Lyon and worked at Dorozos Pizza which was part of the South Lyon Hotel. While it’s fun to theorize about ghosts, I never saw anything.

Just moved to Kissimmee, FL from here. Lived here for 14 years and spent all of my childhood here. It’s has become a little crowded. It’s mainly white people (I am white too so that adds to the count) and the tube mill is honestly out of hand with the noise.

i have grown up in south Lyon mi it has been a great place to grow up but most teens and gen x age kids has grown up being taught to be disrespectful because of parents not raising kids to be kind and just letting them leave whenever. slcs is the best schooling district around there with slhs football most seasons going to playoffs and at south lyon. is where Red out games have started long ago in support of the Red Cross association. It has great people for older generations, most Stores and food markets are friendly and welcoming and yes i believe that that the south lyon hotel is haunted. some other places to go in pinz just between 10 and 11 mile off laffet street.

Pinz was once called the 700 Bowl. I remember when Pinz/700 bowl and the mini plaza and BP Has station wasn't even there yet . It use to be a big open field. I've lived in South Lyon my entire life 54 years along with my siblings. My mom and her 4 siblings also born and raised in South Lyon. My Grandmother and her 9 siblings as born and raised here. My Great Uncle Jimmy and Great Aunt Ocel owned Jimmy's Restaurant. It use to sit at Pontiactrail and 10 mile right on the corner. It's not a physical therapy office.

Don't talk about South lyon it's a great city. These people that brag about Royal Oak and Berkley those are little houses right on top 9f each other it's old. People want bigger homes big kitchens no old ones that need up grades.

People need to stay away we are over populated as it is, South Lyon was never meant to be this big all the wildlife has no where to go anymore, South Lyon is starting to be a sucky place to live now.
