Think Twice before Switching OFF ABS when going Off-road | RE Himalayan, BMW G310 GS and KTM 390 Adventure
When going off-road, majority of riders switch off ABS as a matter of routine.
Have you ever thought, what is the benefit of switching off ABS?
On KTM390 Adventure if you switch off ABS, it will still be active partially but only on front wheel. That means the rear wheel can be locked but not the front.
The BS4 model of the BMW G310 GS had switchable ABS but now on the latest BS6 models same option has been removed. That means you can’t switch off ABS.
On Royal Enfield Himalayan the ABS remains on and there is no option to switch it off. The brakes with ABS don’t really provide a great bite and are just satisfactory unlike KTM390 brakes which are precise and very effective.
So to switch off ABS, an intelligent way was found and that was to pull out the ABS fuze which is located below the rear seat on RE Himalayan motorcycle.
During a routine off-road ride, a Himalayan rider was just behind me with fully switched off ABS. Since the trail Infront of me was narrowing, I started moving to the left. The RE rider had a good speed and closed in too fast. Looking at this situation the RE Himalayan rider applied sharp brakes and now without any ABS front wheel locked in a fraction of a second which resulted in a bad fall. Luckily rider escaped unhurt and motorcycle had minor damages.
Looking at this accident which otherwise could have been very bad, I want to ask everyone of you “Do you still wish to switch off ABS when off-road”?
May be you can share your views and experiences by writing your comments, however as per my experience, it is good to have ABS ON when going off-road.
Infact KTM design team has given the best option of having partial ABS only on the front wheel and that is provided to safeguard a rider from PANIC BRAKING. Generally we all are quite used to applying full brakes because todays motorcycles are equipped with ABS. And in an emergency we are bound to slam both brakes as a matter of routine. However, when in dirt it needs a micro-second to loose control if we lock the front wheel.
That’s why having a little dull brakes and with the ABS is quite safe when going off-road as we are not taking part in a rally or an enduro event.
Probably this is the reason why BMW G 310 GS has removed the ABS switch in the new BS6 models.
Riders who are taking part in competitions, know this point very well and that’s why quite gradual on application of front brakes.
When going steep downhill, having ABS is certainly quite tricky as once the motorcycle weight starts to play because of gravity alongwith the riders weight, ABS may not really help. That’s why when riding with ABS on and going downhill reduce your speed and be very gentle on your brakes. If the slope is very steep, having ABS on is dangerous. In such a situations, may be reducing tyre pressure can be of some help as you can increase the tyre contact patch area.
When riding in slush or in wet conditions, having ABS on is a much safer choice.
On a motorcycle like the KTM390 Adventure, one should ride with ABS off on dirt as it already has partial ABS working in front alongwith no ABS on rear wheel which is the perfect choice for any rider.
Jai Hind and Ride Safe!
