@booterone1
@booterone1 Ай бұрын
The slopped east side will be better location than the way the existing ones as they are closer to a full horizontal position. The trees are going to grow taller every year. And in the winter, the sun will not get as high in the sky, thus even less output in the very shaded area. Put the higher out put panels on the east slopping roof for best results. I had 6 panels that were flat and installed on a trailer, They were in full sun, but by laying flat was not very effective, except in summer when the sun is almost vertical. I opted to add on to my ground mount and the power output nearly doubled just by angling them to a 30 degree slope.
@AveRage_Joe
@AveRage_Joe Ай бұрын
Yep my thoughts precisly! For the panels that are practically flat....I almost put something to angle the panels back then but would have to deal with the panels shading the next row ect... 100% moving the good panels! Possibly trim some trees!🤘

I would move the Sun Gold Power panels to the main ridge of the east facing side; lining themall in a row along the ridge. That would blast power into the batteies early in the morning, then replace the panels you pulled already back to where they were. If thats still not enough, I would then line another row of un-used panels right under the newly mounted Sun Gold Power panels. While the roof does technically face east, its such a low pitch that it would be highly effective until about 4:30 PM in summer and 3:00PM in winter. Then you just need to face enough to the east to support whatever loads you're running if the South facing array doesn't support it already.

Set up best for winter and put up with summer. The earlier and later the sun is charging the batteries the less cycles are accumulated on them. You know where the sun shines in winter. Hey Average Joe. Definitely move your panels to optimize your solar collection. But, maybe get your average tree maintenance dude to do a little trimming on your trees. The trees will thank you by looking better, allowing more solar through, and they will be healthier. THEN assess your solar panel installation configuration. You'll recoup the cost of the average tree trimer doing an average trimming by collecting solar above your current average solar collectin for years to come. WIN-WIN! Great videos, keep 'er movin! Your right on the grounding reasons, racks and panels are required by the NEC in the US to be grounded to the building protective grounding system, it’s that way to give a fault a return path to ground so that breaker or GFCI or ARC fault can work , it’s not for lightening. Don’t forget to install surge protection for a proximate lighting strike .. keep up the content …

Joe, it would help a TON to cut the trees just partly, take some top branches off and inspect again over some days... taking the trees down would be not good of course... just trim them. Yes, you need to do it safely :-)...trees are to close to your house anyway, they would destroy your roof quickly if a storm breaks them...
@realoldgeekster
@realoldgeekster Ай бұрын
I think the cost of topping the trees would not be wise. Plus you would have to do that again soon in the future. Heck, just buy a new house and strategically place trees where they won't affect your panels in say 20 to 30 years. Ah, just kidding. Your cat told me to say that.. 🐈‍⬛️

It all points to an East/West setup. And instead of exclusively using the eastern small South roof where you got all your panels now, use the opposite one on the West side too if possible. Your Western facing/located Roof-sides is by far better then ones your panels are mounted now. You have something to talk with your wife now ;)

No problem. Move the whole house 20' closer to the street and *boom*, more sun, right? In lieu of that, or a moat / pit in the front for the cars to fall into when they plow into the yard, yes, I think your plan is sound. How long would it charge before the chimney casts shadow on that spot? Guessing the current Sungold / Santan location would be clear of the trees by that point.

personally, the early morning, you don't use power as much, but having panels facing west keeps your power going until sunset before you're batteries even kick in. so if you can't get as much eastern sun. maybe go for as much west sun as possible because after your 12pm, you're panels aren't really facing north to get balanced east to west coverage. just a thought

Yes you should. By such small angles it doesn't really metter with side face pannels. I have 20 degrees 4 side roof (NE, SE, SW, NW) and arrays on eache side. All arrays work fantastic. Ofcause NW and NE are performin by good sunny day not so good as SE, SW, but the difference is not dramatic, but in bad conditions all arays works equally, and sometime NW, NE overperform SE and SW. So, if have sun on some places of your roof longer, then definetly move pannels there! PS: nice to see "not a review" again =))))

Definitely move the Sun Gold panels East into the sun. Surprisingly, in many of your arrays, there are often a few panels with shade. That is bad, and unless you are using micro-inverters or optimizers, even one panel in a string in the shade blocks the current of the other panels in the sun. That's what's bad. Get as many complete strings in the sun as possible. And, thanks for the video.

I was originally thinking of doing this. I wanted to start on the north end add head south but that darn chimney is in the way so I would need to set "around" that and then continue on. Ill look at the shade line again and see which way would be best. I know that shade line hits at an angle. If enough length is in the sun on the ridge before that area near the panels. Ill consider that FO SHO! Ill prolly leave the santan on the south facing since they are all the samzies. I could potentially put the other 12 panels below the sungold. Sungolds are a little bigger in size. I have to many crash zones lol💥🤘

I know they say "Happy Wife = Happy Life " but this is a case where you are losing 1/2 of the days solar production so maybe show your wife how much money is being lost and put your foot down and move all those solar panels up to the peak of the roof. Your roof looks very shallow pitched even at the peak and solar panels make good power even when the sun is off by up to 40 degrees so panels on both E & W sides of the peak of your roof will still produce when the sun is to the opposite side (But you've GOT to get them out of the shade!) and also put the East and West panels each on their own separate strings to the inverter. Most people find the new all black panels more visually appealing so maybe tell her you will put the pretty black panels on the West side of the peak towards the street along the very top of the roof and the silver aluminum framed solar panels will go on the east side of the peak where people won't see them. Also a good time to point out to your wife that solar increases the resale value of a home if you ever decide to sell and move. I would put the solar panels you currently have on the ground mounts up on the East peak of the roof also as they don't see sun until noon on the ground. (IF) your wife says NO WAY to even the black solar panels on the West side of the roof then your idea isn't a bad one !

Do you still have a lot of sun exposure on your roof during the winter or is the sun angle too low for a lot of exposure? Hi Joe!!! Hey, Buddy, what you're asking almost answers it self on the video... Of course you should move those panels to the higher part of the roof...!!! And try to put another string along and aside that one to be moved... you should get a lot of sun from midmorning onwards and have your batteries charged between noon and 2 o'clock... that's very important...!!! Also, if you could get another string on the west viewing side of the roof, you should get even more sun for the rest of the afternoon... that rocks...!!! Last but not least, get all those (crappy) Satan solar panels on ground mounts to the east part of your property, where your afraid to get another car on the lawn...!!! 😆😆😆 that's funny...!!! And get those on 1 string to take advantage of the morning sun... you'll have to bring the cables back to the house, but it's extra power for charging...!!! Oh, I forgot!!! Great idea on putting more panels on the backside (south) part of the house, lower than the ground mount you already have there... dish the temporary/permanent ground mount and reconfigure it all as you explained on the video. I think you answered most of your own question. The higher east facing roof needs more panels since it sees more direct sunlight. So why not install the racking system on this new area and then make the decision. Do you move the sun gold panels to the new rack or just install some of the lower output panels on the new rack? It’s up to you and how much time each option will take. The trade off is charge time. The sun gold panels will charge the system faster if moved to the more optimal location, but does it matter? How much time will it take to charge if you use the lower output panels in this location? My gut feeling is that you probably produce extra power right now and the batteries eventually get full charge even with some shadowing. But is this true during the winter months? if it were me, I would move as much as I could to a better sun spot and make the most efficient cells have a prime location. But that’s just me and it might not make sense for you.

And by the way, who cares if the neighbors can see the panels? They are beautiful. My vote is to cover both east and west roof sides with solar if you need that much.

Leave the arrays you have alone and mount the ones you are not using yet above above them closer to the peak of the roof. Try not to make too many holes in the roof.

I really like the tracking array that moves with the sun . Jennings county Indiana put in a awesome system. I wrote my book there speaking to librarian then to my surprise they changed entire library. Tore down my house after calling it a castle so mixed bag in Indiana so now I’m Florida it’s a battle big time I’m off the grid totally they really do like that here I’m not supposed to be getting away with it on. Florida but I am I use a parallel system in 12 volts utilizing dc side first to save $l I’m a censored author btw

Yeah for the most part I did answer my question. I will move the sungold panels since they are the best. Summer time its not to much of an issue but winter time it is. Some days (in summer) I will have "excess". Lately all the storms have kept it cloudy and wont get full charge due to AC or running the dryer lol. Thats ok tho, its lowering the bill regardless. Moving the panels to the east facing will only make holes for those panels. The old rack there on now wont add any putting the old panels back. 💥🤘

that would depend on the state of charge at the end of the day, is it enough? you have enough roof to eliminate the need of buying electric from outside sources and possibly get some of your money back from them

I changed my mind. Put as many on that peaked roofline from the ground as you can. If the wife will allow, maybe get some newer pretty panels with the trim pieces on the edges to make them look pretty on the street facing roofline
