You're one of the few people on KZfaq that I feel truly cares about being honest with your audience and sharing the uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. I really appreciate seeing your videos pop up in my feed. (also the photo on the screen at 13:50 might be one of my favorite landscapes of yours)

@@BryanBirks I totally understand that feeling. I think what is striking to me about that photo is the feeling of existing in that space. When I look at it I feel like I'm on the hill or wherever that was shot actually looking at the environment, seeing the road drift away from me, the divide of the horizontal path as if the scene exists alone solitarily behind it, a quiet place that doesn't move but you must move toward it. There is a voyeristic quality. It doesn't feel like it was shot soley for the purpose of aesthetic beauty of any one aspect, the trees, houses, architecture, but was shot to urge the viewer to consider the space as a whole, as a place that breaths with the lives of people living simply. Sorry to ramble and I apologize if none of this makes any sense, I think of photography through a poetic lens and it is hard for me to describe the effect of an image without sounding flowery, but that is truly how I experience the photo.

I'll never understand how you manage to make such cool video stuff alongside these interactions, it's so tricky just to interact with folks and focus on finding an image, adding video to the mix is a whole other element and you always do it so seamlessly. Very hyped to hear about your experience at Chico and see how it impacts your work!

I discovered your channel a little while ago and have been greedily consuming your videos daily - but it won't be long before I have consumed them all and then have to wait for the next, like everybody else. Your photography, and your showcasing of other beautiful photography, has reignited my own love of photography. i genuinely feel so mentally moved by this video, not just because of the delightful scenery bit inherently in how slow-paced and simple everything is. it's so indicative of what i love about the midwest and it speaks to what i'd love to do in my life. the stories of inability to handle criticism do hit home as well, even if i'm more saddened by it than anything, and overall there's a lot of truth and realism to what you say as you showcase your lovely photos

Thank you! Criticism is hard for sure. Just make sure it’s from the right people. I used to take criticism hard with KZfaq comments but then I realized that some random person typing on a keyboard isn’t someone I should listen to. Have a trustworthy group of people and show work to them. Disregard the rest.

The passing of your father. Brilliant insight. Not everyone gets there man. Our origins are important for all of us. You're photos are sublime, and beautiful all at the same time. What can I say and I'm from nowhere near where you live, not even in the same country. Well, I think they are...at least the ones you show us, lol. That's one thing. The other thing is your book has potential to become a classic part of your local folklore in years to come, so keep going.

Thanks for the kind words! I think it has potential too. But the last thing I want to do is rush it and finding these things out as I go is a part of the process. I'm so happy I watched this in the peace and quite of my room tonight. I'm always happy when I see one of your videos filter through the _______ on youtube. I'm inspired by your art. Often times when I'm watching the video of you driving somewhere I find myself asking why doesn't he stop and photograph this? Your small towns and grain elevators might just be B roll to some viewers. They aren't to me. They're inspirational. I realised some time ago that one of my greatest obstacles to overcome is to stop seeing the familiar as boring. You constantly show me that it's possible to see through that. I have many obstacles to overcome with photography but it's so rewarding to recognise them and work on them. As usual, I'm really looking forward to your next post. Thank you for being you.

Thank you, John. The next project I aim to put together is a more poetic view of the Midwest and my surroundings in black and white. I’m very much a “one project at a time” photographer. But I very much look forward to starting something new and focusing on making new work in a different way.

I sometimes think that being a good photographer is also about being a good wordsmith. I saw you at 3:00 removing something obstructing the JOY sign and then I think an offer from the bloke that you could move something else also if you liked, but you were like 'nah its all good'. To them (outsiders) they can be confused over small micro choices of what (we decide) stays in frame, what is shifted slightly or indeed left alone. It's hard to put into words, sometimes these fellas might be confused as to why you want to enter their garage and 'shoot some stuff' at all, and for us photographers we get it, but being able to accurately and concisely put into words why you are doing it and what you like about it is harder than we give credit. 'Detail shots' sometimes is just not deep enough, and I see it in the general art world, the stuff that gets showcased has a skilled wordsmith behind that can explain clearly the concepts, to help connect the dots. I'm not sure I like that this is necessary but it is something I have noticed a lot more as I age. Thanks again for another great piece.

Thank you for this video this is very helpful personally to me! I am someone who takes photos as a past time and I tell myself that I am not serious about it and I should not try to dig very deep. But lately I am thinking more about it. Among many things I am drawn to 80s 90s pre liberalization architecture here in India. It is kind of stuff that is now crumbling and not even good architecturally. I am realizing it is like I am trying to save a time in my life in these memories. Co-incidently I also lost my father and this was like his time. He missed the whole internet era and along with it all of my achievements and I feel such a loss at that thought. I have never made the connection before but he is someone I inherit my artistic vision or taste from and I have very few photos of him. I seem to want to preserve a part of life that seem to be disappearing.

It's so weird right? We unfortunately live in a world where everything needs to be explained to us, we want others to take our hands and walk us through life. We fear the unknown, the uncertainty, the romance. I think that we sometimes need to stop seeing things with our logical and analytical eyes, stop trying always to keep things in control just because it feels safe. For some, this must be a very scary thing when we let our hearts do the things for us. It is hard to let it go so we feel the need to put words on every single thing that we see, touch or taste.... Photography is the art of letting things go and letting the heart wander without fear through the eyes of the photographer. We don't always need to explain ourselves, the pictures tell a lot already and I feel like the moment we try to put some words on them it just defeats the purpose of it.

Funny. when I lived in Minneapolis, I would take my 4x5 out every weekend for several years and document all the grain elevators around. I was sorting thru negatives recently and realized what a huge stack of those negatives I have. I've asked myself in the past why I did that, but never really came up with an answer other than it seemed like the ting to do (when in Rome...). I'm not really sure all that psychoanalysis you're mentioning is necessary, but maybe it is if you're trying to be a pro. Good luck with the direction you're going in, anyway.

Not sure if he continue doing what i will say next but,...I dont know how the process is but you just bring some of your pictures to his channel, he invites photographers with already a good career, books, exhibition and so on. That day in his channel you would be "exposed" to honest critics that 3,...4 photographers will make about the pictures you submitted.
