Appreciate the time, effort and very useful detailed information your video provided. It gives me a much better idea of what one can expect to shell out for a Generac. Also, what you can expect to pay for installation and maintenance. Thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Living in this great country 🇺🇸 since 1983. Originally from Central America Honduras. I m so grateful that this country has provide me and my entire family with all the things and comfort that We have. Everything has been obtained with honest and hard work. I just traveled to Israel and turkey and was reminded and realized how blessed we are in this great country. A lot of countries have this jealousy of us. But that’s fine. Have been working for 25 years with Caterpillar. Awesome American company. 🇺🇸

I have a 20kW version, installed back in 2014, also on nat gas. I'm up in Chicagoland. Doing annual maint (plugs/filter/oil, I think I'm on my 3rd battery), and only part that failed on the unit was the low oil pressure switch, which leaked. Part was $35. I have had a couple of 24+ hour outages and several few hour outages, and the transfer switch just handles it all. The whole house can run on generator including the A/C, condensing boiler and air handler, but not the induction stovetop and electric oven. I even powered my two neighbors with extension cords so they could keep their fridges going during those long outages. Been worth it, peace of mind, all hard wired with a transfer switch, no gasoline to deal with, safe as no chance to backfeed to the grid. Cheers!

To anyone watching this now, the national average for installation currently is equal to or more than the equipments cost. As well as you will not find a new 22kw for $4800. And remember, this is a piece of emergency equipment, it has a huge convenience factor, but only if it runs flawlessly. With that said, cheap work isn’t good, and good work isn’t cheap.

Great video. One thing I would recommend is make sure to spray around and up the skirts of the generator every so often for bugs. I didn't know this and my Generac generator just gave over a warning when doing the weekly exercise and after paying $190 for a technician to come out they found a huge ant infestation inside of the generator, which if any electrical components fail it is not covered under Generac's warranty. Also I purchased mine from Costco and got a 10% Costco shop card which was almost $1000.

I have a Generac 22kw. Runs everything for our 3000 square ft house. It's worked flawlessly for 3 years. I thought the price was reasonable. I'm out in the country so I also had to purchase a tank ( I went with a 500 gallon buried tank) and of course fill it up. I my total for everything was about $12k Best $$ I've ever spent!

If running for days during a long term outage, shutdown every 12 hours and inspect machine and check oil level and for leaks. Change the oil every 3 days if using Conventional oil, every 6 days if using Amsoil Small Engine Synthetic. If you don't change the oil this frequently, you will pay! It is an Air Cooled engine so oil breaks down fast. I have installed and maintain 4 of these for my family.

Thanks for your video! Very informative. We just got our Generac installed last week (just as Fall starts) and we are very relieved to have it. We told our elderly neighbors (who do not have electrical back up) that we would throw them an extension cord so they could charge their phones and keep their refrigerator running if the power goes out on our street. Some folks need electricity to run their refrigerator for their insulin. Some folks may need a nebulizer for their asthma or oxygen machine. When the power goes down, we won't freeze and we will have the opportunity to help our neighbor's too! Besides, adding an all house generator to your home will be beneficial to the value of your home. It is a win-win.

We bought our Generac 22kW unit even before we renovated our vacation house into our permanent home. Paid $4,000 at Lowes when they had them on sale in 2018 or 2019. Had it installed with a 500 gallon propane tank, and our electrical contractor hooked up everything along with a complete rewire of the house. The original wiring did not meet code and was woefully inadequate for the size of the house. Have had zero problems with the unit in the 18 months it has been installed and have it on a two week start-up schedule. Have weathered a number of outages, the longest was about 10 hours. Only thing we need is to put a UPS on the modem for the internet and on the tankless water heater ( found this out while showering when the power kicked off). Best thing we did for living here in the Georgia mountains!

My wife and I bought a house in southwest Florida in Feb 2022 that had a 22KW Generac setup already installed in 2018 (550 gallon propane tank fuel supply). Hurricane Ian came through Sep 28 2022, and my parents rode out the storm and the aftermath at the house. The Generac performed flawlessly until utility power was restored on October 9. Only thing to note was the need to keep checking and topping off the oil level as it ran continuously. We had a digital antenna setup, so my parents were able to stay informed with the local news stations, even with cell and internet service being down.

We’ve had ours 3 years now and not a single problem. Super easy to change the oil, runs it’s scheduled test cycle every Thursday like clockwork. Four bags of cement from Home Depot for the pad it sits on. Bought it online from Global Industrial. These guys where the cheapest. Had a local electrician install the transfer switch and feeder line for $1200. Most of the cost of install is in the copper. Had a local plumber do the propane line to the unit for $400. All in, we did the whole thing for around $7100.

Make sure you have the updated firmware that gives you a 12 minute exercise time on the generator. A 5 minute exercise time is not sufficient to remove water from the oil unless you're living in a very dry area. Oil will absorb water. Part of the purpose of regular exercise is to get the oil hot to drive the water out. Unless your generator is being used in an actual back up mode frequently, make sure exercises for 10 - 12 minutes once per week.
@Zionist_Eternal
@Zionist_Eternal 5 ай бұрын
Moreover, I have been advised by my installer to not only exercise the motor but to flip the power for a few minutes, perhaps once every month or six weeks, so the alternator receives a workout and the power regulator's stability is verified.

Have had one for almost ten years. Zero issues. Change the oil once a year and have changed the air filter once. Runs for 5 min once a week. Still on original battery. Would not be without one. When the power goes out in the winter we’re the only house in our street with our Christmas lights on 😂

Good demo. Thanks. Makes me feel good about my recent purchase of 22KW Generac. This will give me peace of mind come the next Kansas polar vortex which seizes up wind turbines in Texas and Evergy decides to cut our power for half a day during subzero weather, because of the Southwest regional grid agreement. I'm on their customer panel and when asked about the event, I excoriated them. I don't give a rat's rear end what the load on the grid is, they have the infrastructure, or should have, to prevent any shutdowns because of what happens in another state with stupid green energy policies.

I got lucky and found a 20kw and digital switch on Amazon for $3,500 back in 2015. I did the install my self and had a electrical contractor make the tie in to the meter box. It operates on natural gas. The final cost was about $5,000. During the summer time after a severe thunderstorm it ran for 15 hrs. continually, gas bill only went up $15 that month. I’m sure it will be a good deal higher in the winter. I get no complaints from neighbors simply because I charge their wireless devices for any one that needs it and the neighbor next door gets an extension cord for his fridge and a light or a tv. So far I’m very satisfied with the investment.

I got the 18KW Generac installed in January 2022. My house isn't real big,... around 1250 sq ft, all electric & central air. We set the generator up on propane & they paid for the first tank fill. ( I'm sure they worked it in to the numbers where I paid for it, but it's cool). I'm in south Louisiana. Power can be out for 2-3 days, to a week or more after a hurricane. So far I haven't had that happen, but I am in a rural area and a good thunderstorm can take out the electricity for 2-3 hours. So far it has about 17 actual running hours on it. My computer, TV, modem & router are on ups battery backup systems (cheapies from Amazon) but they do the job. Within 15-20 seconds of an outage, the Generac has everything up and running. With all my goodies on ups, I hardly notice an outage other than lights going out. I did get the maintenance plan. I couldn't be happier with it so far.😃

I'm really interested in getting one of these, but I'm a little leery too. We went without power for 18 days after Ida last year. The heat was horrible, not to mention the humidity. My elderly aunt has one of these, and it gave her a lot of problems the 2nd or 3rd day, and because so many had problems, it took some time to get someone to her house to fix those problems. Generac told her that they have never experienced this many homes all at once using them, and it caused some kind of stress on the systems. I'm not exactly positive what their reasons were. One person on my block, it totally broke, yet another a block away, had no problems at all. As far as the monthly gas bill, yes it was high. My aunt said it cost her a little over $400.00 to run hers for those 18'ish days, and that included the couple of days it didn't run. However, it cost us right around $500.00 for our gas generator. We have ours hooked up to our house, but we cannot run the a/c or our desk top computers. My husband had to sit in long lines in the extreme heat, you can't run your car a/c when idling for hours. So the cost is approximately the same, but you get to stay in the comfort of your home, not in long lines with a lot of pissed off, suffering people. And to top it off, you may sit in the long lines for gasoline, but by the time you get to the front, the gas runs out. If you are lucky enough to have a gas truck waiting to fill up the station, it takes a long time to dump that load. So if the monthly cost of your natural gas bill is your problem, wait until you start paying to fill up your gas cans. And now, with our communist leader shutting down our country's energy, gas is way more then it was last year...

I'm in Metairie, and we had a smaller generator for Ida. I could only run the fridge and a few other small things. We now have a portable, whole home generator. We also had to drive to get gas, sit in lines and wait, and even got to the pumps right when the gas station closed and turned off their pumps as well. Ugh. This time around, we will be prepared. I won't have to send my family to Galveston and stay here, sleeping in my own pools of sweat. What is wrong with your vehicle that your A/C doesn't work? I am going to build a shed around my generator though. I don't want to hear it run all night, and my neighbors don't deserve to hear it either. But actually, let's pray we never need them. As far as the Commie in Chief, let's hope things change real soon for the better.
@desertdee1
@desertdee1 Жыл бұрын
@@jmackinjersey1 What portable whole home generator? It can run your a/c and desk top computer? That would be nice, but you still have to go for gas? Correct? We have a/c in our vehicle, however, in the heat of the day, idling for hours, you can't run it. You risk overheating the vehicle. btw... I'm across the river from you on the westbank. :)

My grandparents, who live 1/4 mile from my parents, had one of these Generac units installed last summer and they only had a brief 30 second hiccup before everything came back on at their house. My parents decided after having to do laundry and cook meals at their house for a few days that they were going to get one of the 24kw models installed ASAP. Stumbled across your video. I too have a Generac generator. It's the 20kW version. Had it installed back in I think 2012/13. It's interesting that your house has a dual zone HVAC setup. Mine is about 3200 SF of finished space and I only have a single zone HVAC system. My install also required an upgraded natural gas meter as I have a ton of gas appliances: gas range, gas water heater, furnace, and three gas fireplaces. I don't see it in your install, but mine included two load centers. One for the HVAC and one for the electric dryer. A load test was also performed after the install was complete and the generator kept up fine without a hiccup. One thing I would do for those thinking about having a backup generator installed is to have a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) in place for specific electronics you'd like to have constantly running during the cut over time required for power to come from the generator. I'm in IT and have a ton of network, storage, and server equipment I run that is fed off of a large UPS. The pricing you got is an absolute bargain as I think I paid around $14k for my install all in. And this was cheaper than another estimate I got from another contractor. As far as maintenance, I've done an oil change on the generator myself. It's not that hard and I used the official Generac maintenance kit that included synthetic oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and an air filter. I haven't installed the spark plugs or the air filter. The amount of usage my generator sees isn't much. Other than the weekly scheduled operation of the generator, the generator has only operated for about 3 hours of total use during an outage situation. I may do the spark plugs on the next oil change. I haven't done a valve lash check which is called out for in the manual but the tech that came about a year ago to perform the factory recall said it's typically not needed and if the valve lash is out of spec, I would really hear it. I did replace the factory battery which was around 5 to 6 years old when I did it. Per above, there was a factory recall for my generator. It involved the fuel plenum. At first, Generac would only replace the plenum if it showed signs of rust. But later decided to just replaced all affected units. The tech that did mine said the plenum in my generator was fine but still performed the recall. So it appears, Generac does provide decent customer service at least in my case. I have seen reports of Generac generator failures both in the comments here and else where. Don't know what to think as so far, mine has been running without issue. As to Kohler, I have read up on them and they are another reputable choice. From what I've read, their generators are supposed to be quieter running than the Generacs.

Thanks for watching and the comment, we did not need load shed modules, one company said we did and two others said we did not, I am able to power everything but doubt we would ever have everything in the house and garage on at one time during an outage. Great advise on the Ups device. All of our maintenance is included in our mobile link monitoring system. We have the valve lash adjusted at the hour mark needed. The tech said it did need a small adjustment but would have been fine if we had not done it. I let them do all the servicing as it’s included and I know they can’t say anything warranty wise. Thanks again for watching please subscribe if you have not already and check out some of my other videos.
@zx10rguyable
@zx10rguyable Жыл бұрын
@@JustCantSitStill Interesting you haven't needed the modules and also getting differing opinions. From what I recall, both bids had them in included. Since the maintenance is included in the mobile link service, I don't blame you for just letting them do it. For me, I don't think I would need that kind of monitoring. I walk by the generator on a pretty frequent basis so I will see the status indicators. Also when I did the last oil change after a few years since the engine was only ran for the weekly scheduled operations with only one 45 minute outage, the oil that came out was almost as clear as when it was new. So for me, the annual maintenance while good wouldn't be something necessary for me. One thing of note, it appears Generac removed the external NEMA 5-15 outlets on the Guardian series generators. Mine has them. And I did subscribe and liked the video. Thanks for creating the content.

Good job explaining your Generac, we purchased one about 2 1/2 years ago, my wife is on oxygen machine at home and wanted to make sure if the power is out, she has what is needed, good piece of mind. Our house is 2100 sq ft, gas stove and dryer, gas furnace, they did an assessment of what we needed and came up with 16KW, install was one day with three guys, one worked placing the generator, another running the gas line and last one doing electrical, company we used specializes in intalling these units, they have two crews and do 2 installs a day. They did a great job, total cost was just under $8000. Unit came with 7-year warranty from Generac. Some people spend money on boats, fancy cars or vacations which is fine, we spent it on piece of mind. Good luck with your Generac. Something we hope we never have to use.

My 22KW unit happened to be running it’s weekly test when I came across your video. Very nice and thorough rundown of the process of getting one of these set up. Pretty much mirrored my experience. Up here we had a holiday ice storm in 2013 or 14 that ruined Christmas and I said “never again”. Couple years later I spent around $7K and zero regrets. Powers everything we have and would power more. My case is stainless steel so will never rust. Peace of mind can be hard to come by these days and this Generac truly does provide it.

I have a smaller version of the Generac. Runs on natural gas, comes on within a few minutes of power out automatically. It does an "exercise" for about 15 minutes once per week. I get it serviced once per year, oil/filter changes and diagnostics check (about $100). Well worth it, it gets used at least a few times per year. Saves you from throwing out hundreds of dollars worth of food... you won't freeze in the winter or fry in the summer. Be nice and let your neighbor run a cord over to their refrigerator...

Very informative video. I sold industrial generators for CAT and Kohler for 30-years combined. One thing I will stress is not to stand in front of a transfer switch with the cover off when it is going to transfer. If something goes wrong during the transfer, all that electrical energy is going to come at you and could be deadly. Glad to hear you are getting annual maintenance, you should do a walk around inspection once a week before your Gen exercises to make sure the oil level is good. Last, if you are in an extended outage, the Gen should be shut down and the oil checked at least every 24-hours. These small generators are built to be cheap and will use oil when running and the low oil shut down may no work as it gets older. If your generator fails due to low oil, your ten year warranty will not cover the failure, my brother-in-law found that out the hard way.

Thanks buddy for watching and the comment, good tips ! I check the oil periodically and checked daily during our 36hour outage. So far it’s not needed snug oil added. I went with a smaller 12kw Briggs and Stratton unit. Price was a consideration but so is fuel consumption. I did some of the grunt work on our installation, with permits, all in we spent a little over $8500. We are on propane, in the foothills of California's and a 22kw generator would empty a 250gallon propane tank in about 3 to 4 days. We had a sub panel installed and brought over all circuits except for the dryer and oven. In a big snow storm or some other weather event getting a fuel delivery can be a big problem. Our 2500 Sq. ft home operates smoothly winter or summer. In the 3+ years we've had the whole house generator, it's operated almost 400 hours flawlessly.

Glad I found your video. I’ve just ordered a 24kw LP Generac for delivery in 4-5 months and compared three dealers, one for a Kohler 20kw and 2 Generac. I’m impressed with the detail you provided so it makes me feel confident the price I’m paying for the same setup is good. My quote is for the same as your setup but for the newer 24kw, have to look to see what I’m getting for service, but total was $10.7k. Although I do have to add a 500 gal tank and fill it for another $1400 (leased) or $3,800 (purchased). AND…because of your video, I think I’m going to post a similar video from start to finish as mine is installed in a few months - praying for no major outages until at least Spring.
