Three Little Words (1950) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ThreeLittleWords
From the moment they meet, lyricist and vaudeville star Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) and piano player and song huckster Harry Ruby (Red Skelton) are destined for great things. The two have nothing in common except the ability to craft chart-topping songs and a lifelong friendship. Now, through work, women, setbacks and success these two reach the heights of their profession and overcome a rift that threatens to divide them forever. Featuring the songs "Three Little Words," "Who's Sorry Now," "Thinking of You" and "Where Did You Get That Girl."
Directed By Richard Thorpe
Starring Fred Astaire, Vera-Ellen, Red Skelton

I saw a film on TV which was made to celebrate MGM and in the part about musicals. Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was a sensational dancer himself, said he thought that this dance was the most perfect routine he ever saw in a film. Their arms and legs are not just in time they match one another perfectly and Vera-Ellen seems to float. She was very much underrated.

I think that Fred and Vera-Ellen were the most magical dance couple ever to grace the stage on a classic Hollywood movie screen. They were great with other people, too, no mistake about that; Vera-Ellen was extremely versatile and danced well with Danny Kaye, Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly. Fred was a fantastic dancer with other women as well. Fred and Ginger were fun; Fred and Rita Hayworth were inspiring; Fred and Eleanor Powell were amazing, and Fred and Cyd Charisse were classy. But Fred and Vera-Ellen were just. . .magical. There was something in their performances, that they didn't have with anyone else, IMO.

One of the loveliest openings to a dance number: the way the vocal finishes and Astaire and Vera-Ellen seamlessly pivot away from the piano and saunter onto the large floor (of a cruise ship, mind you) is just beautiful. And funnyman Skelton in probably in the most subdued role of his career: the cool, piano-playing composer (gnashing a pencil instead of a cigarette) on the very romantic "Thinking of You." Also great clothes: Vera-Ellen's nightgown doubles as an evening gown for dancing. Amazing bling.

Vera-Ellen was one of the unsung stars of the Hollywood musical. She partnered with Astaire and Kelly equally well and could keep up with both regardless of the type of dance number. Compare the elegance of this number with the passion of Slaughter on 10th Avenue she did with Gene Kelly. Both were magic.

As a kid watching musicals, I knew Fred was a good dancer, but wasn't overwhelmed at first. Before VCRs/DVDs, I'd have to catch an occasional TV broadcast. This film, Three Little Words happened to be on 3 times in a month on different stations, and I watched each time. The last time was around 1 or 2am. By the time it ended in the middle of the night, I realized Fred was the greatest entertainer that ever lived. It was like an epiphany, like a lightning strike. This dance was one of those that put me over the top. Just flawless waves of beauty. Not sure who dubbed Vera, but I always thought it was a pretty good match for her, and the mood of the song. A smaller, quieter musical with so many quality moments...always a favorite.

Fred was always generous in letting a partner be her best, and here he is almost a self-effacing 'danseur noble', displaying Vera-Ellen's balletic talents front and center. This may be the most fluid of all his partnered romantic dances. He might be a little slower than in his heyday with Ginger, but the line of the number is even smoother. His stances are faultless, emphasising her motions; the sudden transition into a Latin rhythm does not feel forced, and the gentle descent back to their starting point is the right way to conclude this quietly beautiful pas de deux. It looks ahead to 'Dancing in the Dark' in 'The Band Wagon', with its return to the carriage. Fred spent the 1930s disparaging 'toe-dancing' classical ballet, but when ballerinas such as Vera-Ellen and Charisse appeared in Hollywood, he could adapt his ballroom-based style. He never stopped learning.
@gregd6022
@gregd6022 4 жыл бұрын
Guessing you're not Latin, he's far from"faultless" here. Usually Astaire looks faultless because of the partners he usually has (& relative to his peers) but next to Vera Ellen, it shows how he's missing it a lot, and no feel oh his part also, completely contrived. Not to mention all the "Latin" dances had to be changed so he could dance them back then, fo ex Samba ballroom has zero to do with ..Samba, can say that about a lot of it back then. He wouldn't last a second today, Vera would be fine.
@esmeephillips5888
@esmeephillips5888 4 жыл бұрын
@@gregd6022 It was a Latin rhythm, not a full-blooded flamenco; a gentle sway in keeping with what had gone before, and with the dramatic mood of the scene. The integrated musical borrowed a lot but did not seek to reproduce styles puristically, Call it Latinate.

There was a lot of great music written in the 1920's, but orchestration was kind of primitive then. Quality arranging didn't start to catch up till about 1940.

Johnny Green and Conrad Salinger, two Harvard-educated men of great taste, had been refining the studio sound at MGM for some years. Louis B Mayer, who had firm views about making movie soundtracks 'classy', encouraged them, and others such as Roger Edens and Robert Russell Bennett, after Cole Porter (who did not do his own arranging or orchestrating) had been hired to compose for Eleanor Powell in 1936. Green and his band backed Fred in the 1930s in re-recordings of his and Ginger's RKO hits, and appreciated Astaire's unique gift for breaking a new song on film. By the time Three Little Words came out, the MGM studio orchestra was at its zenith: ready to accompany An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain and The Band Wagon.

I love Vera-Ellen. She was one of the great Hollywood dancers of all time. But the clip ought to give credit to Anita Ellis for dubbing her vocals. By the way, Vera-Ellen's last name is Rohe; she never used it professionally. Note that she is dancing in flats, not high heels. She was only 5'4" -- but by wearing flats in this scene, she makes the 5'9" Astaire look taller.

This one was better, the classical ballroom dancing definitely is her strong suit. It's a wonderful and amazingly graceful dance. Emotion-wise I personally still prefer Ginger, this dance had a very practical and flat vibe to it whereas the dances with Fred&Ginger always spark and burst with emotion and electricity. But I do admit that this kind of dance wouldn't have been possible with Ginger as she was just a totally different person and dancer.

It was Mercedes BENZ or a BENTLEY not an Escalade with all the crap and glitter and spoked wheels. Today? There are gorgeous women but the make-up industry is too much.
