Thanks for this. Dumb question here. After replacing the components, do you have to change anything in the bios for the laptop to work again properly? As for cloning those drives, that's another topic I'm researching on. Thanks.

Glad to see someone not disconnect the battery. I have the 2020 X1 G2. I decided the risk of nicking the board with a screwdriver tip, trying to get the connector off, was much higher than anything else for installing a so-DIMM. I disconnected the battery in bios and was grounded with a mat & wrist strap.

@0:35 there is no need to do that ... just do a restart of the computer instead of the shutdown. The restart includes a full shutdown and full reboot, and alsa shows a "to interupt the startup press ..." message :D
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 4 жыл бұрын
@express496: Right you are! Simply doing a restart will give you the option to interrupt the startup process if you need to quickly access the BIOS. The official CRU Replacement section in the manual, however, says to disable the fast startup feature in Windows (likely to ensure you perform a proper shutdown, in case you didn't choose the restart option). So I decided to show that method - but a simple restart should work too!

Once again great video, great demonstration, and great information. Thank you for this!

@dn: I'm glad you found the video helpful! I don't currently have any plans to make a video on repasting, but I still have a some additional thermal testing I need to do on the machine (among other benchmarks). If I find that the machine is throttling too much or I notice other overheating-type issues, I'll definitely be making the video then. So, I guess the answer is - stay tuned!

Thank you! You’ve totally demystified the process (I Just ordered my gen 2 with a separate SSD). I’m gonna replace the thermal paste but I haven’t seen any guides for this model, is it the same assembly as the 1st gen?
@digitalBrink

@Christopher, I haven't yet attempted to replace the thermal paste on my machine (been stuck in the benchmarking world for a while), but from what I can tell the layout / configuration appears to be the same (or - at least - very similar). Sorry I couldn't be of more help here; I'd be interested to hear how your update process went after you get your machine!

digitalBrink No worries - I ended up cancelling the order, it wasn’t quite fit for my demanding needs! As a photographer, I needed a display that was as close to 100% Adobe RGB as possible and higher than 1080p (otherwise it would be a step-down from my retina MBP), as a gamer I wanted a display with a refresh rate higher than the Lenovo’s standard 30Hz, a 9th gen. processor and graphics card that could do some heavy lifting in a build as close to MacBook Pro standards as possible. I don’t ask for much, right? I’ve been juggling the trade-offs cos you can’t have it all, but it looks like Razer’s new 17” 4K offering meets all those standards - just waiting for it to drop in the U.K. By the way, know anyone looking for a new liver?
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherAndreou LOL! I hear you - these things definitely cost and arm and a leg. If you're going to pay that much, it better do exactly what you want. Good luck with the Razer laptop - shoot me a message after you get it and let me know how it is!

This videos is really helpful. I have a question. That anti static wrist band you are wearing, where are you connecting the end? Usually for desktop, I realize that you are to connect it to the exposed metal part of the frame. Just curious.
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 4 жыл бұрын
@Chowdhury Rahman, good question! For this video, I was working in my basement which has some exposed piping. I connected the alligator clip to the piping next to me to ground myself. If you didn't have any pipes around, you could also use something like this Banana Jack adapter: amzn.to/2pfnGGU . In this case, you would remove the alligator clip end, and take the single prong and plug it into the adapter. You would just want to make sure the outlet you plug it in to has a true ground as some houses may not have a proper ground setup for their outlets. If you don't have anything handy, you could just attach it to a big piece of metal. It won't fully ground you, but at least it should prevent static discharge from arcing from your hand to the board.

What is that black (It is white in this video cause of light reflect) circle object on top of the battery (the one that two black and red wires are connected to)? It was displaced in my x1gen2 causing some noisy sounds while tapping on the laptop. The object was attached with a magnetic force to a white circle beneath it I think!

@digitalBrink 4 жыл бұрын
@Nikos Rentas: I haven't seen any SO-DIMM sticks that are 64GB in size. The official max-memory as reported by Lenovo for this laptop is 64GB, so if 64GB was your cap anyway, I would just get a 2x32GB setup to take better advantages of a multi-channel setup.

nice one! what's the ram and ssd lenovo used?
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! The drive used is an Samsung NVMe drive (Model MZ-VLB512B, PN: MZVLB512HBJQ-000L7). So far this NVMe drive has been really fast for me, so I'm not disappointed (CrystalDiskMark reported 3463/2766 sequential read). The RAM didn't have any manufacturer markings on it (that I could see - maybe under the sticker?) and when I looked at CPUz, it didn't report any manufacturer information on it - but doing a quick search on the part number for memory chips themselves showed them to be Micron based (the chips are labeled as 9KJ45 D9WSM). I also found the sticks on Alibaba based on the FRU on the sticker, but based on that it seems they are just "generic" sticks (yufan770909.en.alibaba.com/product/62186774575-0/01AG876_Laptop_Memory.html). Hopefully this helps!

@Abd El Rahman El-Seidy, unfortunately, I can't give you a definitive answer right now on this. I've been running battery tests on this machine the last week and half - and am still running them, testing the battery under various conditions. I plan on making a detail battery analysis video which will hopefully cover the most useful scenarios and what type of battery life you can expect to see. That being said, from what I've seen so far (and what Windows has reported), in dGPU mode you can at expect to about 4 hours of usage unless you're using it for some hardcore gaming. Be sure to subscribe to get notified as soon as my battery analysis video comes out! #ShamelessPlug

But more importantly, how does FFXIV run on there?
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Evangeline! I don't actually play FFXIV, but have been running the Shadowbringers benchmark tool (na.finalfantasyxiv.com/benchmark/index.html) as part of some tests I'm running on the machine, - so the rendering from that is all I can speak to. That being said, the demo has been running pretty well for me. I've currently set the benchmark settings to "Laptop (High)", and been running it at the maximum resolution for my particular setup (1080p). On the Intel UHD 630 chipset, the framerate seems a bit choppy to me at times, especially when on battery and at the lower battery performance modes. On the 1650, the benchmark seems to run really smooth, and the graphics look great. The only other thing I've noticed is the screen tearing; on the UHD chipset, the screen tearing has gotten pretty bad at times. On the 1650, I've only noticed it every once in a while, but it's still there. I'm sure there are some settings I could adjust in the nVidia control panel (maybe enable triple buffering or something), but I haven't messed with any of those settings; this was my experience out of the box.
@catgirl_eva
@catgirl_eva 5 жыл бұрын
Good to know that the 1650 handles it well! I should finally be getting my X1 Extreme tomorrow (also 1080p). Screen tearing is unfortunately a problem with the FFXIV benchmark tools, since Vsync isn't available in them for some odd reason. In the actual game itself, that screen tearing isn't really an issue, provided one's hardware is able to run the game at a high enough framerate.
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 5 жыл бұрын
@@catgirl_eva Thank you for the information on the FFXIV benchmarks! You definitely saved me some time trying to figure out why the screen tearing was occurring. Be sure to update me when you get your machine on how the real game runs!

@catgirl_eva 5 жыл бұрын
@@digitalBrink Update time! I got my X1E2 yesterday afternoon and it's absolutely amazing! Of course, in running it through its paces, I played a bit of Final Fantasy XIV. No screen tearing at all. I'm running at 1080p with the graphics preset at Maximum. Framerate seems to hover between 53 and 55fps. Not sure about thermals while playing that game in particular, but I can say that the fan does become audible. However, it's not loud enough to be any more than a nuisance.
@digitalBrink
@digitalBrink 5 жыл бұрын
@Evangeline, thats awesome! I'm glad the tearing issue is isolated to just the benchmark. I didn't see any issues while playing Forza 4, but wasn't sure since I hadn't done enough testing. Also, did you notice any differences with the framerate between having the laptop plugged in vs on battery?
