The 3rd leaf Tempranillo vines at Blue-Merle Winery have produced much fruit and need to be thinned. In this video Winemaker's Journal gives an example of thinning grape clusters. The idea is to produce a delicious grape for winemaking from these young vines -- not "a lot" of grapes.

Oh so I should cut some of the fruits in my grapevines, huh! I know it's a must but I feel like oh no hehe! I'm just a newbie grapevine grower who didn't know all these things to be done for better yield. By the way my grapevines are only planted in pots but they are loaded with fruits now.

That’s wonderful! May I suggest you read our book “About That Wine I Gave You” - it has a lot of stories about those magical vines! Here’s the link: a.co/34dkGF2

Thanks for the informative video. My dog also respond to "rabbit". Say "squirrel" and she doesn't bat an eye. But "rabbit" always perks her attention.

Thanks for the video. I have three year old vines also and I spur pruned and have a T shaped support. Its just loaded with grapes so I guess I better prune. The vine is no where near as open as yours. Yours looks like cane pruned. My variety is Reliance and Frontenac.

Hi New England! Our vines are generally "spur" pruned. We prune to about 4 spurs per cordon arm (plus or minus) with 2 shoots per spur (on average). This video is a couple of years old. Our vines are much larger now. We have a section of cane pruned vines ... I'm thinking of doing a bit more cane pruning next year in some specific areas where we have too much foilage. I invite you to join our group on LinkedIn called "Winemakers Forum". Are you making wine this year? Good luck!

Those were relatively young vines at the time, and not cane pruned. I'm becoming a fan of can pruning in areas where the vegetation is thick to reduce the canopy. I made the mistake this year of "overcropping" - it made a real difference -- at the end, we couldn't use the "overcropped" fruit - the quality didn't meet our standards. The 2009 wine (shown in the video) came out pretty good. The 2011 to die for!

You got a very healthy grapevines 👍. Why is it my grape berries stop growing? They stay at the stage as what you shown in the video for more than a month now. Thanks in advance.

Hi Sharon - can you email me a picture of your grapes? Please email it to bluemerlewinery@gmail.com and let me know what area you are growing your vines. I'm not an "expert" - but I'd be interested in looking at a picture of your grapes. I would say these grapes in the video were also green for about a month, and gradually turned purple. Look forward to hearing from you.

I have a video I took today of wild scuppling vines all over the woods like a literal acre of them lol. I wanna go out and prune some back because I’m worried they won’t produce because they have soooo many small clusters probably too much, but I can’t find anything about domesticating wild vines or just getting them to produce and fruit so I can get seeds and plant those. Any tips? Lol

is there a reason why you pruned the clusters after the fruit set from the flowers?
@WinemakersJournal
@WinemakersJournal 8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Watson Yes, there was a reason. The vines were relatively young at that time, and we did not want to overcrop. The objective is to make great tasting wine, not to grow the most grapes. So, we dropped some of the fruit. If the same vine had that much fruit now (6 years later) we would likely keep it, because the vine is larger, stronger and can sustain more fruit. Cheers!

Where do you buy those plastic greenish,tape-ties? I don't want to use zip ties as they are hard to cut and I always cut myself on their edges, somehow. Where do you purchase those wonderful green tape-like ties? :) thanks!!

+Sylvia Catalano Hi Sylvia -You can buy the green tape at most garden shops. I believe we built it in bulk from Jim's Fence in Bakersfield, CA - we purchased hundreds of them.

Yes, absolutely. I'll point out that those were young vines when that fruit was dropped - now that the vines are mature, there is less fruit dropping. They all went into composting bins.
