While this video is definitely not a tutorial for someone needing every step, it is some big-time tips to save time and do a more effective job for somebody confident to take it on without every step outlined. This is a miserable job, but hey, if I can do it, so can you :-) good luck and God bless

Fantastic. Wrenching professionally 20 yrs and wife’s prius had its first problem after 190k miles. This is the kind of video a pro needs. Bang dang boom, no chit chat. Straight to the point: do this to fix it. Bravo!

New Sub Here! i have a client with this annoying issue on his Prius. i removed & cleaned his EGR Valve about a year ago and here we are dealing with the same P0-code... So thanks to this video, there's some further surgery needed; cause i needed to know What All Involves the EGR... So i did some checking and read that there's an EGR Valve, EGR Cooler, and possibly the MAP Sensor involved in this code. He always says this vehicle burns oil... So i'll take off the intake also! Thanks 👌

One thing that you should have probably mentioned about the intake manifold is that the cavity where the egr tube connects to is separate from the rest of it and there is like a little pee hole that comes up from that cavity to each of the 4 big holes that mount to the engine. I discovered them by accident when I took a hose to it after soaking it overnight in Purple Power. 2 of the pee holes had water running out of them but the other two were completely clogged. I used a flat blade screwdriver to scrape off the crusted over gunk on top then used a set of thin brushes to clean out the holes along with brake cleaner

I blocked off my EGR with a putty knife like you did in another video and it seems to run fine every time I do that so I'm assuming it must be the cooler and valve that is clogged and sealed open. Thanks so much for all the tips. I sure hope it's the EGR cooler system and not the head gasket. Pulling it out this morning to see.

Thanks for sharing! How many miles were on this? I’m about to pull the trigger on an ‘11 with 150k. It’s a one owner and took it to the dealer shop every 5k. Seems amazing, I hope it’s a reliable rig. I want to be on top of everything before anything’s an issue. Should I do this as preventive maintenance?

Yep. Clean the EGR Valve, Cooler, Pipe and intake manifold (pay particular attention to the small holes).

Mine is at 194k that just git the knock of justice, probably overfilled the oil and definitely burned some oil. Gunk + it's stuck now. In a funk, now I dunk the valve in the junk, wd-40 and she's got spunk again

Cleaning the EGR itself is very easy. We need to unbolt 2 studs from the short pipe to the EGR and we have full access with bamboo chopstics tore move all hard carbon crust.

the nut you said is supereasy is a real pain. there is a coolant hose right next to it, that makes it impossible to place the ratchet. the tool head is too bulky and interferes with the hose. i removed all HV cables and pushed them away. still a pain.

Hmmmm. I am super vocal when I am annoyed by stuff working on the cars, to warn the subscribers. So chances are, some combination of extensions or u joints or whatever made it manageable. Please subscribe - others have asked to see me do it and I will film next time

I let the egr cooler soak in water + fluid degreaser like 6 times (several hours per time) and it's still losing dirt! Unbelievable quantity of carbon it gathers over the years

How many miles does egr need cleaning if every 50l or 100k miles

I think that’s a case by case kind of thing… The highest mileage one of these I’ve personally had was about 200,000 and it was fine. I’ve had a 276,000 mile, retail generation two. Of course no EGR system on that. Had a 424,000 mile generation two trade-in

i soaked my exchanger overnight with oven cleaner and the sooth turned into gunk. hooked a garden hose and after 10 min still brown residue from the entrance. looked inside and got scared. compressed air? if you have a high volume high pressure, try it. i dont. so i set a bnofire old cooking pot, oven cleaner and water. stir, lift up, submerge, the brown liquid always comes out the entrance. sooth turned into gunk and now it is mandatory to clean it up 100% like new. when get tired of hot water will try paint thinner or diesel. do not use gas! evaporates and does no good to the gunk inside. need heavy solvent.

BE CAREFUL! Combustibles and heat don’t mix! Maybe just buy one if yours is that bad!

@@DrewGarage I sprayed mine with oil thinner and then boiled it in an old pot outdoors. soon, the oil came to the top of the hot water, ... and... smoke on the water, fire in the sky.... yes, it caught fire, but i expected it, i was outdoor.
