I agree that the distrust the public has not helped society move forward, and I hate that I’m contributing to that by spreading misinformation about the usage of HeLa cells! @@tiachu it's not misinformation, it's just based on earlier years when HeLa cells were heavily used, so don't feel guilty about it. Funny enough though, the reason why these cells are still used more often than we realize is because they contaminated other cell cultures--a lot of labs didn't observe strict cell culture rules and ended up seeding other cultures with HeLa cells, and they thrived. It never happened to me, but I had another contamination once. I was working on a breast cancer project and my brand new cells (burrowed from another lab) looked and behaved a bit strange. So I sent them for DNA analysis and sure enough: instead of a female breast cancer cell line, I had a male colon cancer one 😂. Six months of work, down the drain...Ah research is fun. Love your thrift-book shopping videos and love those two furry menaces in your home 🥰

OHHH NOOO THE CONTAMINATION 😭😭😭😭 how frustrating, I can’t imagine finding that out after 6 months just like 😧😐 LOL. One time in college we were doing a lab on agar plates, and idk where my group messed up but as the cultures grew there was this bright pink stuff all over our cells?? And we asked my professor and she literally said “I’ve never seen that before, please dispose of that in medical waste immediately” LIKE WHAAATT 😩😩😩 science is so fun and so crazy LOL. @@tiachu that reminds me of this story one of my colleagues shared: he was organizing a lab for undergrads with another TA and they gave one student a lollipop that had been dipped into a culture of E. coli bacteria. The student was supposed to touch it with his gloves, then he was supposed to shake hands with other colleagues (all wearing gloves) and at the end they were supposed to touch their hands on an agar plate, let it incubate and figure out who was the person who first held the original infected item. At the end of the class the other teaching assistant was looking for the lollipop that had been dipped in bacteria and couldn't find it. Turns out the guy who was supposed to touch it first thought it was safe to eat. The TA nearly had an apoplectic attack. I do not want to know the amount of paperwork they had to fill in for that incident. The student was fine. Though I'm not sure he should be allowed to graduate.
