Video/recipe request… I want to host a summer BBQ party with rum based drinks. As part of it, I want to make a big batch of rum punch (each part being a 700ml bottle). What’s your recipe? Baring in mind that it needs to not break the bank, and be accessible to everyone. If it’s any worth, my current go to rum punch recipe is: - 1 part lime juice - 1/2 part strawberry syrup - 1/2 part cinnamon syrup - 1 part orgeat (it’s a cross between mai tai and rum punch) - 1 part Duppy White - 1 part Plantation Xaymaca - 1 part Worthy Park 109 - Loads of crushed ice - Topped with a splash of wray (I love the Jamaican twist, but appreciate it’s not for the masses)

Love a Punch. I’ve kinda done the breakdown already. But a while ago. Honestly, stick to the 1,2,3,4 method and you can’t go wrong. But I keep it simply a lot of the time. Lime, Honey & Orgeat, Rum, Water/Crushed Ice. 👌

My favorite combination of rum for the Pina Colada is Plantation 5 year, and Plantation Stiggin's Fancy Pineapple Rum. WOW, what a delicious flavor blast, and the darker rums give it more depth and complexity than white rums...

Yeah...that'll work!! 😂 Don't think i've done that. But you know the Stiggins is a blend of Plantation 3 Stars and OD anyway. So it has a great base to start!

The plantation being last blew me away, but I think you're right that it had to be because it's primarily pot still.

Flor de Cana 4 year has some coconut notes for me and at $30/1.75 liter, it's my go to for white rum drinks that are not rum forward. 3 Star works in different cocktails. Everyone needs both on their bar.

Bounty rum has interesting characteristics in general. On the one hand, it is a model dark rum, and on the other hand, it has very pronounced grassy and herbal elements. I think to myself - yes, definitely mai tai rum. - even the back of the bottle says so. But when I learned the characteristics of Pina colada, I remember that you recommended adding dash anise. It all makes sense. I recently did such a test at home and Doorly's 5 was the best for me, but I have to try this Bounty now. Thank you very much for the rum education!

Great video. I was expecting the Plantation to be 2nd place, was shocked to see it didn’t even rate and I always use Plantstion 3 Star for my Pina Coladas after I moved away from using Havana Club 3.

I used Flor De Cana 4 year in your Pina Colada recipe, it was really good! I'll be adding Don Q Gold and Bounty Dark to my shopping list and try a blind test in the future, cheers! 🥥

For my pinas, my favorite is 45 ml white Puerto Rican and 15 ml Wray and Nephew. It gives me the Jamaican/ tropical fruit pairing that I love without the funk overpowering the drink. I use the same blend for my Hemingway daiquiris as well.

Steve, as rum is my go-to spirit every time, I love your blind taste tests as they educate me on what to look for in a rum. Here in the US, rums are probably the least favorite spirits and the limited selection in the liquor stores backs this up. You videos help me to be on the lookout for new and worthy ones to try. 🍍🥥🍹

That’s fascinating. I’d never contemplated that. I knew Bourbon/Whiskey was obviously huge. And I know Tequila is massive there (not so much here in UK). But assumed Rum was still a pretty big deal. No ones ever described it as the least popular spirit.

@@StevetheBarmanUK Perhaps it is a regional thing as the US is huge. I live in NJ, 9mi west of NYC and Bourbon/Whiskey and Tequila selection is at least 2-3 times that of Rum. Vodka would rank next. Gin is about equal to rum in store selection, and I guess popularity. Bacardi and Malibu take the lion's share of the market. Just my opinion, of course, but based on availability from store to store. I developed a preference for rum because of trying to create classic tiki drinks, which are not so popular on the east coast as compared to the west, namely, California. Cheers.

🥥oookay, didnt expect that to happen.. i understand perfectly what you meant Steve, plantation does kinda punch a bit too much in that, but we cant get any of the other 5 in serbia so thats a bummer..i think im gonna try with angostura 7 and see what happens

I know you've probably seen many 1-rum QPS recipes, but my experience is that you can freestyle a fair bit when you make a QPS. I often mix rums and/or add a bit of falernum. If i were to choose only one, it would probably be Probitas/Veritas.

QPS is a great shout. But the Bitters probably overshadow the Rum. Cos you use a lot and they’re really punchy. Still a good generic experiment though…as in White vs Gold vs Dark vs Longer Aged. 👍👌

Nah, this was a proper Rum Test. If I went the Planteray Stiggins, then there's 5 other Pineapple Rums i'd have needed to include, Let alone Coconut Rums or even Banana Rums! Had to draw the line somewhere! 😂

I can't get Bounty in my neck of the woods (Belgium) but plan to replace Don Q gold with Bacardi 4 as Steve mentioned. I'd suggest maybe trying B4.

Yeah Bacardi 4 great shout. Maybe even Flor de Cana…IF you can get the 5. We struggle with the FDC 5 in the UK. But it’s a good rum. Be mainly just get the 4 & the 7.
