The "Zh" is used to replace the letter "ழ" in Tamizh and "ഴ " in Malayalam because it doesn't have equivalent in any other Indian/world languages BTW, it should be pronounced similar to the letter "L" but can't be explained via keyboard 🙂 And also the word Tamizh itself has the ending letter Zh(ழ்) i.e., "தமிழ்"but commonly written and pronounced as "Tamil" Edit: For those who replying that some other languages too having the letter are unaware that the letter what you people thinking is the 2nd variant "ळ" is equivalent to "ள" Tamizh! That's not what am talking about! Most of the Indian languages have this letter... But you don't know we(Tamizh and Malayalam) have the 3rd one! "ழ" Please note 3rd one! Since the 2nd one and the first one sound quite similar so we use regular letter "l" to write those letters but in case of the third one, the pronunciation is a way different so to solve this we use "Zh" to write that letter So, ultimately we've "ல=la, ள=la and ழ=Zha" So now is there any language with the third one?

To English speakers, "Zh" sounds like "R" to them. But ours is a little softer than theirs.

You are correct about Tamizh and Malayalam. But doesn't have an equivalent in any other Indian languages, seriously? India has more than 1000+ languages. And most of us knows an only handful of them. stop being ignorant man. The languages I know which has the exact same sounding are Sanskrit and Marathi. And that letter is " ळ ". There might be other languages which has same pronunciation but we don't know about them.

But In Tamizh and Malayalam have 3 different letters! ல, ள, ழ The equivalent for the letter you gave is ள But there's actually we've got 3 letters and the equivalent for the 3rd ழ is not in any Indian languages as far as records we got! There's nothing wrong in saying that If you believe this letter present in any other language then you are welcomed to say that🤷🏻♂️ For your reference checkout the video about this in "India in pixel" YT channel

I do remember that Abhay Jodhpurkar once told in an interview that Marathi also has the same sound or letter, when he was questioned that how he is pronouncing it perfectly when he sings Tamil song!!

About Pazham: Tamil has three 'L' sounds, the hard L, medium L and the soft L, Pazh(l)am has the soft L sound which sounds like a sound between L and R, similar to the Mandarin R, the soft L is transliterated as 'zh,' for beginners, you can pronounce it as 'L', it's still wrong though.

Zh is pronounced as R with an American accent... it's a special letter in Tamil and Malayalam but Old kannada used to have it as well

In Tamil sound of "L" has three types, they sound similar but with little difference.. first type "zh" like they call pazham, 2nd and 3rd falls under L(eg- villa) when it comes to English.
