I have had this exact car for about five months now and it's outstanding. Without charging I average 55 mpg, and that's highway heavy, I usually get 48 miles from a full charge. It won't hold a 4x8, but I have had 3x5 sheets of hardy backer in it, and 8 foot lengths of construction lumber (front passenger seat folds flat), hatch closed, no problem. It's fun to drive when you want to, highway speed passing is especially impressive, and when you don't the driver assistance package is really good. I got it under MSRP and benefited from a state tax incentive in addition--that took some aggressive negotiation with my local dealer, but it happened for me anyway. The best use case for a PHEV is is you have high electric rates but limited access to free charging, with this car I can take advantage of the free charging when available and drive really cheaply on gasoline when it's not. I drive a lot, with my previous car, a Civic, transportation fuel was a huge expense for me, now it's negligible.

i mean for most ppl its easier to just get the 4x8 or lumber delivered when you need it. they will even cut it down for you. either that to buy a $80k pick up truck that may not even carry the 4x8

@@TheSateef Without measuring, probably. I think you have about 5 foot 6 with the front seats in a normal position, I suspect if you move them all the way forward and push the backs forward you will fit, but with an overhang past the shelf formed by the folded back seats. You can also move the front seats all the way forward and with the headrests out lower and recline them all the way and get about 8 foot three of flat-ish surface at least on the passenger side. Just keep in mind it's only about three foot two at the narrowest.

@@JogBird That $80 delivery fee is hard to swallow if you only need a couple of sheets, sometimes you need it at full size or nearly. Anyway a roof rack works in that case, although I haven't set one up for the Prius yet. The 8 foot long boards in the car is a nice trick my Civic hatch couldn't do, just trying to paint a picture of the car's utility and it's limitations.

Good luck getting your hands on one. Depending on the dealership they might be allocated one per year and I was told mine had a waitlist of 11 people. I've been waiting months for my normal Limited to come in and just when I thought I might get it they issued a stop sale because a door sensor might get water in it and might let a rear door open while you're driving. That's only if the rear door is unlocked to begin with, which don't pretty much all modern cars lock the doors automatically? That was months ago and no word yet on a fix or when I can have my car. At this point I might just cancel and wait for the Civic Hybrid hatchback.

Hybrids and PHEVs are the best use of the resources and are useful by a lot more people in this country. EVs are the future, and they can be fun and aggravating, but Hybrids and PHEVs are a more direct step from ICE vehicles, don't require extended stops for 'energy' and will improve MPG and save money in the long run. The new Prius is certainly an visual improvement over the last one. Great video as always, Nathan.

If only Toyota learned that lesson over 10 years ago when they had the chance! Having a compromised cargo space, more aerodynamic drag and a hazardous A pillar for the sake of looks are not actual improvements. It makes for less value for money in a daily vehicle.

@anydaynow01

@@devonconnor3563 Why would they pay more for fuel and the inconvenience of having to go to the gas station when they can have a "full tank" every morning? Every driver I know with a personally owned PHEV plugs in like it's a religion, myself included, there's quite a few coworkers, friends and family who have gone this route, we all plug in. The people who almost never plug in are the ones driving fleet vehicles with company fuel cards. Our company got rid of all our PHEVs after their leases were up for this reason and are just leasing regular cheaper HEVs now since that's how most everyone was using them, I can count on one hand how many times I saw one plugged in at work. If someone was given a company PHEV it could have been solved by just taking away their fuel card, "...but that would be too inconvenient." was the company answer.
@anydaynow01
@anydaynow01 18 күн бұрын
Yep, it just makes the most sense for legacy auto to not hoard batteries in a few BEVs when more people can daily drive emissions free with PHEVs, or low emissions with HEVs, until they get more battery plants running, then they can hoard away. Like GM could have literally built ten Voltec CUVs for every one Hummer or Silverado EV, and judging by how fast the Volts are selling on the used market at a premium (like my '17 Volt is the first used car where the price has actually increased substantially since I bought it right before the pandemic) and how Toyota Primes are like hen's teeth they would have no problem selling them for a profit in this market. For pure electric companies like Rivian and Tesla there's zero sense in them making PHEVs. Plus, folks who can't charge daily or have marathon commutes should have a zero emission option. If someone can charge daily there's zero reason they should be hoarding hundreds of km worth of batteries they will not use in daily driving.

We own a Toyota Prius 2005. One can seat decently in the front seats, and the rear ones. There's plenty of leg room in the rear. The driver easily can plop his rear end on the seat coming from outside, no need to bend the neck while pulling the head inside. Getting in and out in the front is easy like in and out a minivan - most people do not touch the A pillar while getting the head in and out. I wanted a PHEV. Our old timer started requiring expensive repairs due to failing old modules. Yet, the modern Prius entirely kills the space inside, mind you, with the same overall car length. It's a total no go for our family due to its "sleekness".

I mentioned this in a TFL review of the Infiniti QX, in the 20's car design has really been truly incredible up to this point. So many gorgeous, beautiful, straight up sexy auto designs lately. Never thought I'd say this about a Prius, but this is a rather sexy car. In the 80's through to the 2010's car design was becoming more and more terrible every year, with the 10's being almost completely horrible. Since 2020 though there have been some real breathtaking vehicles, this is one of those in my opinion. Keep in mind I remember the debut of the second generation Prius, which was almost uncomfortable to look at in comparison to this new one.

Yeah, by now if they spread out the Voltec system through their entire line the tech would have paid for itself and it would have been pure profit like Toyota is doing with putting their hybrid system in everything. They also should have put the system in a CUV or SUV with a bit larger battery, nobody wanted/wants domestic sedans. The advertising and explanation of the Voltec system was also lackluster at best. Also the advances they could have made and the lower battery costs these days and it would have been very competitive. The general public just wasn't ready for that car.

PHEVs have such a narrow use case. I had the king of PHEVs, a volt. I liked it when I didn’t have an EV but I found that it was a perfect short range EV dragging around a mediocre ICE. If 30-40 miles of range is a good number for you an EV would be even better.

The problem with all hybrids is that each one is yet another gas engine burning gas for 10 - 20 years; or until an improved battery technology achieves critical mass. That said, I think that for over 50% of drivers EVs are an excellent choice today: people who have the ability to install a charger at home, primarily drive around town for work and whatever, and only make a 500 mile trip once or twice a year.
@TomLawlor-iq6gm

We live on an island that takes ten hours to drive across. It has but one highway that is a continuous route for the full breadth of the place. On busy days, there can be a very high volume of traffic with many, many cars heading in the same direction and destination. No matter which BEV you source, you'll be forced to recharge several times. So, even if you can super charge in 15-20 minutes, how long will you have to wait for a charger if there are six or seven other cars already waiting (and, you can drive no further as a BEV. Yet, even on the very busiest days, you can pump gas in 5 minutes and be on your way. We have a 24 Prime. With a full charge and full tank of gas we could almost make the trip without stopping at all. Our Prime was over $20,000 less than a Tesla. That's a lot of gas money. Having said that, after 3,700+Km, our car has had one fill-up. We don't want to burn gas, but still need to be practical

I’d be 1 min from home and try to make it without engine turning on and bam it turns on. If I manage to drive it in EV without running out of battery, then engine isn’t working enough and 12V battery gets drained. For me I’d pick between hybrid or pure EV. PHEV is way too complicated. There are vast spaces in the USA and Canada where even the most efficient Tesla is a scary proposal in dead winter: Alberta. Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Utah outside large highways, British Columbia between large cities, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, northern parts of Ontario, Quebec, Alaska, Ukon, all the North of Canada, Middle of country of the USA like Oklahoma, Missouri, etc. Looking on the map one can see the significance and need of PHEVs. The only acceptable way to own a PHEV all over USA and Canada is to be able to have a parking close to home and a plug overnight. Thanks to the fact that most remote locations, farms are still connected to the electric grid this kind of PHEV makes sense anywhere before any charging infrastructure is in place.
