Restricted to 300hp for class rules, this VQ35DE powered JGTC (Now Super GT) Z33 350z interesting sees up to 480hp due to some clever intake work by Nismo according to owner and driver Dale Malone of DM Motorsport with a maximum output of 580hp being a potential, but only for a short period of time mainly due to harmonics being an issue at high RPM.
The car runs an older Pectel Cosworth electronics package with Windows 95 still being the required OS to run the tuning software. While it's great to keep things original, complications like this are one of the reasons why we see many people update the electronics in older racing platforms in order to give more flexibility and even increase reliability with the modern crop of ECU's and sensors we have available now days.
One of the interesting aspects of this car is the 28l intake and airbox which allowed for an extra boost of power coming out of the corners before the intake restrictors, the size of which was dictated by the circuit back when it was a factory race car with teams having a range of engine maps to suit.
Common to motorsport applications a Hewland split shaft transmission which allows for individual gear ratio adjustment and a PI Reseach data logging system is in place however other than the general engine inputs for the World Time Attack Challenge, shock potentiometers are the only added extra for the moment along with a GT500 aero setup, GT500 being a less restrictive class in the same series at the time.

So after being wot and the plenum collection effect "wears off" is the restriction that great that the engine starts seeing less than atmospheric pressure?
@m0rb1d43
@m0rb1d43 2 жыл бұрын
It's breathing through 6 ~50mm throttle bodies and it has 2 ~27mm restrictors, so yes
@scoob66
@scoob66 2 жыл бұрын
@@m0rb1d43 most of that's definitely placed on behalf of the 27mm restrictions though I'd assume. 50mm throttle bodies aren't horribly small and they're in the "force fed" plenum so the plenum could be at atmospheric pressure with motion if it weren't for the other restrictions up front
@m0rb1d43
@m0rb1d43 2 жыл бұрын
@@scoob66 That's exactly my point. The ram-air effect is so minor, that's not going to compensate for the amount of air the engine will be pulling. If the restrictors would be removed it would be completely different.

A little fun fact, current GT300 cars are actually producing around 400-500hp, while GT500 makes around 600-650hp. GT500 can pretty much go toe to toe with an LMP2 car (maybe even faster)

28l? An engine would make a vacuum out of this in like 10-20 revolutions. I don't think the boos from this airbox lasts for more than 1 sec.

As discussed it is a small gain which in a 'spec' series can be the difference between winning and loosing. No one should be running out to replace their turbochargers with a 28L airbox etc.....😉 : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7ykq9hqnLHZY3U.html - Taz.

As road speed increases, pressure into the plenum builds from the intake in the front bar. This changes resonance and filling throughout the RPM range. Data showed around 20% increase in volume available to the engine under WOT, at speed compared to static, even with the restrictors.
