Swami Sarvapriyananda is a Hindu monk belonging to the Ramakrishna Order. He is the current resident Swami and head of the Vedanta Society of New York, a position he has been serving since January 2017. He grew up in Bhubhaneshwar in the Indian state of Odisha. From childhood onwards, he was inclined towards spirituality and was inspired by the lives of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. His family was also devoutly religious, who were initiated devotees in the Ramakrishna Order tradition. Swami Sarvapriyananda has stated that his first goal in life was to become a pilot and the second was to find God, with the second goal later becoming his only goal. After passing school, he completed his Business Management degree from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. Sarvapriyandanda joined the Ramakrishna Order in 1994 and took his monastic vows in 2004.
Swami Sarvapriyananda served as assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of Southern California in 2015. He was later appointed head of the Vedanta Society of New York, a position he has been serving since 6th January 2017. He was also selected as a Nagral Fellow for the year 2019-20 at Harvard Divinity School.

oh im so happy for you that you got to meet Swami Sarvapriyananda! I was addicted to dr*gs, shooting up and homeless for a little over 10 years and I went to prison and got clean, 4 years now. I discovered Swami Sarvapriyananda just after I got out of prison and started reading the Upanishads and different Gitas and it has completely changed my life and perspective. Im so grateful and thank the Lord all the time for this. ❤ any way much love and many blessing on your journey

Swamiji (Palit Bhai/Brother) was 2 year senior to me in BJB College Bhubaneswar in my Graduation days. I remember him talking once about how plants and animals react to human compassion towards them. Girls would go head over heels for him but Palit bhai would be like a little smile, a hand wave or at most an 'hello' maximum as an reaction. At that age he was at such peace and ease with himself. It's the Grace of God that I was blessed to have an exclusive meet with the Benign Divine omritosya Putra..Lomita arouses the desire,intensity to have more it.l am not embellished to be in His Holiness presence, he is world Guru.Dumb as I always was,did not enquire how to meet the goal that I intend to. The desire is alive,try attending his non-dual Vedanta, on bhokti,on kirtan, the history n great vaisnav tradition. My body'dicreasingly become more problematic,the thirst has not died...what the lord intends will happen. As an Englishman raised in a christian tradition i whole heartedly say that vedanta generally and Advaita Vedanta in particular are the greatest spiritual - philosophy in human history . I now only understand Christianity in the light of Advaita . I regard Bhagavan sri Ramana Maharshi 🙏 is one of the gteatest spiritual figures in human history. We are very fortunate to have Swami Sarvapriyananda at this time . He is one of the great spiritual orators 🙏🕉️

Other Inspirations on YT for me are : Bernardo Kastrup PhD PhD - who gives great evidence for Idealism , and discusses consciousness in great detail ; a channel called Temples , Books and Science which draws the connection between quantum physics and Advaita ; and Michael James who lived at Arunachala for 20 years and collaborated with Sadhu Om in translating many important Sri Ramana works . How do you reconcile the inherent contradiction between Christianity and Advait Vedanta ? For example, I am born sinner as per Christianity but born divine as per Vedanta. As far as I know, God is a separate entity in Christianity but not so in Vedanta.

Well I always differentiate between what I call Churchianity ( which is theology )and Christianity ( which I take to be the core teachings of Christ - as far as we know them ) . As a child I used to think ' if God is Omnipresent, then what room is there for anything but God ? ) . I prayed deeply to Christ to understand these things and but by but , say over a twenty year period , I was led to Sri Ramana who I strongly felt that ' if I could meet Christ in the flesh then He would be something like Sri Ramana ' . I was really delighted when I read that Sri Ramana said ' Infinity does not allow for finite parts within it ' . This means that only God exists and anything else is illusory in some way . The theological idea of original sin that would condemn a young child to hell if they died and were not baptised is little short of abhorrent. Sri Ramana Maharshi does say that ( ego )birth itself is the original sin . I note that Mahatma Gandhi said that his two favourite scriptures were the Bhagavad Gita and the Sermon on the Mount . I think that the Sermon on the Mount should be the core teaching of Christianity. 🙏✝️🕉️

I was raised in a family blessed by Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna. Luckily, around ten years ago, when I was in my first year of college, my History professor introduced me to the speeches of Swami Sarvapriyananda Ji. Ever since, I have been a great admirer and devotee of this great personality. Only a few monks in India are as insightful as him, and I am so fortunate to have found this podcast... Awesome video. Swami sarvapriyanda is a wonderful speaker because of his wife knowledge of both Hinduism, vedanta and he's aware of western psychology and philosophy. He is so lucid and persuasive. He is comfortable with Sanskrit and English.thankful to ramakrishna mission for spreading India's greatest traddditons in thethe style of our great Swami vivekananda

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to you.

The reality is all religions are searching for the soul only . The way to get soul is to be ego less. Or to be no mind state . when ur mind is absent soul is present. Budhism gives meditation to be mind/ego less Jainsism gives upvas to be mind /ego less Hinduism gives prayer / mantra / tantra / upvas / meditation many ways to be ego mind less Sikhsm gives a perspective of rab rakha means I don't exist whatever will be done by rab only because of this u or ego doesn't exist Islam gives prayers doing 4 times a day bending towards a god in the form of a prayer to be ego/mind less Christianity gives prayer and fast to be ego/ mind less . All religions lead to one place thats to be ego less . when ur ego is gone god is within you .

As a matter of fact initially there was only Prana.....PRANA , LIGHT and GAYATRI MANTRA are one and the same.....PRANA + DESIRE = ENERGY (Shakti) , ENERGY + FOCUSSED ATTENTION ( Brahma) = MATTER.... So, we should emulate such process during our meditation time (Brahma Muhurta at Khumbaka state).....in order to create one´s own heaven on earth...because we are Brahma ( focussed atention)....Never ever we ought to forget such precious concept....

I feel Amira asked the right questions to make swamiji flower with answers. However I would repeat my request to make as few more podcasts to show India's achievement. Maybe one on enlightenment or vedanta.no other swamiji has impressed me as this one.its because of his capacity to explain complex theories in simple words. With the decline of self-help and western philosophy that neitzshe led it to the time has come to put vadvaita vedanta centre stage. I have studied Vedanta teachings through Swami Chinmayananca since 1975 when I wrote to him in India and he replied. I met him and sat with him over several years at retreats. He passed to the great beyond but I've contnued to read and study his writings and listening to Swami Sarvapayananda today has been such an inspiration. Thank you for presenting this. wonderful interview - so happy to see your show on here - - thanks for bringing on a higher being for this subject. Paramahansa Yogananda says that the brain is a "receiver" akin to Swami S's "instrument" as discussed here. I believe this as well - the brain is not the generator of consciousness. It's merely an instrument to link this material plane and our senses to consciousness.

I am not sure if you would be able to do this but there is another monk of the same order (Ramakrishna Order) who is spiritually inclined. Swami Chetanananda is 87 I believe and he was taught under direct disciples of Holy Mother Sarada Devi and Ramakrishna's direct disciples like Swami Brahmananda and Sarat Maharaj, etc. He has endless stories to tell and is so full of wisdom. Swamiji (Sarvapriyananda) has a couple lectures with Maharaj (Chetanananda) as well. Not sure how open he would be to getting on a podcast at his age, but he is very wise and so pure in heart, and again, has endless wisdom.

I think total detachment will get you salvation, nirvana. It's like an elaborate stage where you experience life as it unfolds. You are standing in front of the background screens which keep changing according to the act that is being performed. For a sadhak, all he does is snap his fingers and the background screen changes and he knows it's only the screen that has created the scene and it's not real

I have not an iota of doubt that Swami Ji has experienced ‘’The Truth’’ .Needless to say he is Enlightened. @@Gamer-monk. From what I know he has not written any book. I have watched his videos too. Swami Vivekananda also didn't proclaim him the greatest. No great Swami or monk will proclaim him/her the greatest. So, that's not a great a criteria to give him higher pedestal to Swami Vivekananda, don't flow with emotions. First Read Swami Vivekananda' Biography in 2 Volumes (Biography of Swami Vivekananda by his eastern and western disciples) Then read Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda all 9 volumes. Then comment. Usually I don't like to compare Swamis but you are creating this pedestal controversy that's why I am responding. Read what his Guru Bhagwan Ramkrishna Paramhamsa said about Swami Vivekananda then I don't think you will make such comments.

It's amusing how you conveniently dismiss someone's influence and teachings just because they haven't penned down volumes. Let me remind you, wisdom isn't confined to ink and paper. Swami Sarvapriyananda's greatness doesn't hinge on anyone's proclamation, not even his own. It's evident in the hearts and minds of those he inspired, the lives he touched, and the profound impact he made on the world. But of course, you seem more concerned with titles and credentials than actual substance. If you truly seek wisdom, delve beyond the pages of biographies and volumes. Look at the essence of his teachings, the depth of his insights, and the resonance they hold even today. And while you're at it, perhaps reflect on the narrowness of your criteria for greatness. So, before you preach about reading volumes, perhaps you should broaden your perspective and learn to appreciate wisdom in its myriad forms, not just in the confines of printed pages.

For past 2 years. I started my journey of spirituality. And whatever I learnt thru personal experiences and videos and manifestation booklets and all the methods and loving in now and learning everything about Neville Goddard, Eckhart Tolle, and NOW, and sound, vibrations, living in 3D,vs creating the desired reality, being the observer, subliminals, chanting. Etc etc. They are exactly talking the same thing. I try to teach my friends the concept of these things. But they never understand. Thanks to this video they will understand now. :)

One Appreciation & One humble criticism. 1. Thank You very much Sister Amira ji for the innovation of giving Swamiji some real Life situation and asking him to solve it through Advaita ! Very very helpful. I like it very much whenever Swamiji speaks more practical aspects and less of heavy MetaPhysics. Thank you also for sharing that situation of "Argument with Mom" and pulling in Advaita to solve the situation. So relatable in every house ! 2. When the Conflict arises, there is actually some " BioPhysics" happening in the Brain. It's a Play of weights. We wanting to remain a Witness and something else wanting to React with aggression. Who wins ? The one heavier wins. Now, who is heavier ? @24:22 he talks about Strong Conditioning. So, the stronger Conditioning wins which in most cases will be to " react" with aggression. When this is the case, Swamiji should have discussed elaborate & Systematic mechanisms to increase the " Weight of Capacity to Witness". In this regard, two things need to be noted. -- All major Saints including Swami Vivekananda ji talks about " Meat eating leading to restless minds". Unfortunately, Swami Sarvapriyananda Ji & Vedanta Society does not talk about this. And hence in most of the "Meat eating " families, its the restlessness which wins :( -- Also, in this interview, Swamiji did NOT speak about the need for fixed hours of Daily Practice . Unless there is fixed hours of Daily Practice, there is no question of the individual winning real life situations. IN this context, I think, Amogh Lila Prabhu Ji of ISKCON , whom you interviewed, wins big time. They are preaching strict "Satvic Meals " and compulsory daily 2 hours of meditation sessions. ---> I really wish that you bring this up with Swamiji. God has blessed you with access to him ! Please make him answerable. Just lectures without Systematic mentoring will NOT help much.

Swami Vivekananda said many other things related to meat eating too. Why taking only those points which suits your thoughts, take all the meat eating points of Swami Vivekananda with proper context. Again now you will be shocked to know something: Swami Sarvapriyananda is non-vegetarian himself, now you might not take him as correct spiritual pereon that's your problem. Now how much meat he eats that I don't know. Now you will ask for proof: he himself said it multiple times. 1 instance you will finf in AskSwami session of around 5th March last year. The editing team cutted that portion you will find a glitch in yhe video even the whole comment section is discussing the veg Non-veg nonsense there (fyi I am Vegetarian) but don't care about other people food habits. Now Swami also believes in the fact that Lord Ram and Krishna and sages like Agastya were non-vegetarians. So Spirituality is not defined by Food Habits only Now you will not think Swami Sarvapriyananda as great monk then that's your loss.😅

@@sumitdutta7043 1. First of all, there is Nothing called as "Spirituality ". There exists only Life & its constant Battle with NAture to attain Freedom. We need to Conquer Nature manifesting through us. It's a battle and every battle should be fought intelligently towards Victory. Intelligent battlefield game plans offer "Satvic Diet" as the easiest means to douse the fire in the nerves. Need of this strategy may not be required for a Swami Sarvapriyananda ji as he has ample time as a Monk to sit for Long hours in meditation and then go to someone's home for his alms. But a householder may not have this Luxury to sit for long hours in Meditation. So, he can easily choose "Satvic Diet " to keep the nerves calm. 2. Swami Vivekananda does say " Until sufficient advances are made in Chemistry, we may have to take meat". I Agree. During his times there was NO Insulin to manage diabetes. He was suffering from Severe Diabetes and he could not consume even an ounce of carbohydrate. So, he had to take 100% Carb free diet through Animal flesh. 3. Sarvapriyananda ji is right in pointing out that Sri Ram was consuming meat. But, Sri Raam was also an advocate of "Waking up everyday at Brahma Muhurtam for Daily Spiritual Practices". So, if the world is waking up at Brahma Muhurt for daily spiritual practices, I have nothing to advise them. If they are NOT doing it and just want to eat meat because Sri Raam was eating it, then they are are one Wrong track and also Swami Sarvapriyananda ji is offering a wrong teaching.

@@sumitdutta7043 1. Swami Vivekananda ji has concluded his arguments on meat eating in his lecture on " east and the west ". He categorically says, "Strict vegetarian diet for spiritual seekers " . Vivekananda Ji suffered by severe Diabetes and in those times there was No availability of Insulin to manage Diabetes, so he had to say, until Chemistry advances sufficiently, we may have to rely on meat. He is used to take Carb free diet by relying only on Meat to manage his diabetes. 2. Sarvapriyananda Ji is right in Pointing out the fact that Sri Raam consumed meat. But, as can be seen in the Ramayan itself,. Sri Raam was advocating " Waking up everyday at Brahma Muhurat for daily Spiritual practices " . Is Sarvapriyananda Ji mentioning that ? No. So, just wanting to mimic Sri Raam in his Dietary Habits but not mimicking his Spiritual habits is Hypocrisy of the Tallest order. 3. Indian Spiritual sciences do offer the concept of "Satvic Diet " in spiritual life. If Swami Sarvapriyananda Ji wants to cloud that, we will ensure that the cloud is pushed aside in aid of Spiritual aspirants who may have to use this science to calm their nerves.

@@kumarakantirava429 1. Btw why do you assume that his nerves are not calm. Actually its not just Ram and many great kshtriya and householder, many saints and sages like Agastya used to take meat. You are only using food as calming your nerves its nolike non-vegetarians eating people can't meditate. Also people in the world need more protein to do hard work they actually have less restrictions regarding meat eating, they should consume meat if its necessary to fulfill their protein requirements. Strength comes 1st before anything. In Mahabhrata too haven't you heard the part where a butcher and householder women were enlightened and taught about it to a sage. 2. I will have to look Valmiki Râmâyana regarding this Bramhmuhurat thing. Again why relating Bramhmuhurt with eating habits, even if a person wakes up at Bramhmuhurt and eats non-veg every day how come it will become right. Many non-veg eating persons are also calm. There is no hard and fast rule. 3. Yaaa but why expecting Swami Sarvapriyananda to push the cloud aside where he is already clear in his stance. If you want Adwaita with Vegan Diet listen to Acharya Prashant he is a knowledgeable person on Adwaita and also pro-vegan diet supporter guy. You will like his videos kn KZfaq.
