In the 1980s, Porsche created a machine that would take on Le Mans and completely obliterate the competition. The Porsche 962 is a true motorsport legend, and Mike Fernie has been lucky enough to be thrown the keys to one of the twin turbo, ground effects monsters.

That Nurburgring old 956 record by Stefan Bellof was absolutely insane. It lasted for what... three decades. I mean that is just completely crazy to even think about... at the pace cars and technology otherwise developed during that era. I think Keke Rosberg (the Formula 1 World Champion of 1982 tried to break it with a F1 car but couldn't get even near). In my opinion, it was much more impressive that anyone can achieve today (even Porsche). In relative terms of course. What a legendary car. If I understand correctly, this 962 was pretty much just a "developed update" of the 956, right?

Don’t forget it also included the Grand Prix part of the track for that record. Longer than what is currently used for recording Numbering records
@DonatProdanSimRacing
@DonatProdanSimRacing Жыл бұрын
@@porschecollector727 It didn't include the GP part. That year, Nurburgring GP was actually in construction, so that was the only year WSC ran at just the Nordschleife as Betonschleife where they used to have the pits and s/f line was being demolished for the GP circuit to be built, so instead of going straight after the Hohenrain Chicane, they turned right and straight into what is today known as the Sabine Schmitz Curve, so it was just Nordschleife, almost identical in layout to what is run today for record laps, although with 1980s asphalt and kerbs.

Fabulous cars, as were their older siblings the 956. I saw them race at many 1000km races in the Group C series in the 1980's.They were always on the pace,particularly in the hands of Bell,Stuck, Ludwig,Mass and the late great Bob Wollek.

A few years ago when Mike took Tiff to the Nurbergring he said if the video got enough likes they'd put Tiff back in a 962. That was just before the rona hit, and it was delayed indefinitely. I even nagged him on his DMs for if they were still doing it, but he told me to be patient as something was in the works. Sure enough Lovecars put Tiff in the Porsche 962 he raced at Le Mans in 1992 a month ago and I was just so happy that someone did it. But then Drivetribe came back with this absolute banger of a video. I could tell Mike was as excited as a schoolboy to get behind the wheel of that Porsche. It goes to show that your patience will often be rewarded. I'm so happy for you Mike and I've been watching this channel since that Jaguar XJR9 walk around and it really made me happy to watch back then, just as happy as I am now.

Finally someone said it. For too long this car has existed in the shadow of cult cars like the Sauber C9 - undoubtedly a great car - and - inexplicably - the Mazda 787B. And while making customer cars undoubtedly improves the odds, few other manufacturers even attempted it. Spice tried and succeeded but sportscar racing in the 1980s was totally dominated by the 956 and 962.

EVERY race car post 1986 had to have the pedals behind the front axle, not just Group C, even down to Formula Ford. Before that the driver's feet and ankles were the first to arrive at the scene a frontal accident. After that there were several years trying to balance the cars again with the driver mass moved back. That's why FFord van Dieman RF86 were beating the later RF87 and RF88 and why driver like me (almost 180cm) got more uncomfortable.

The reason Porsche dominated for so long is slightly unclear. The brochure things like power and aerodynamics hide something that a lot of people who are new to Group C either don’t understand or have missed altogether. That reason is fuel economy. It’s easy to build an engine that will make 1,000 hp. It’s even possible to build an engine that will make 1,000 hp for 24 hours. But the goal of Group C was something different: to extract the maximum amount of power from a given amount of fuel. Group C mandated 100 litre fuel tanks from the start. In 1,000 km and 6 hour races, you were allowed to refuel 5 or 6 times (someone will clear this up, I’m sure) and for the Le Mans 24 hr race, there was a fuel allocation of 2,500 litres per car for C1 cars. These figures were reduced over the lifetime of the formula. These rules were strictly enforced. I remember Sauber having one of their cars disqualified for being 100ml over the limit for a 1000km race. Have a think about that for a second. 100ml is barely a half a small cup of coffee. Porsche were among the first to introduce computer mapped EFI and electronic ignition and it took the other teams a while to catch up with that technology. By the time they had, Porsche had moved further ahead anyway. The object was the most favourable compromise between power and economy. The drivers had something to do with this too. The idea was to run out of fuel as you crossed the finish line. To do this required a lot of patience and keeping one’s hand away from the boost dial.
