They should never have put her in that position. They should have known she would receive harsh criticism. I can only imagine the hurt of having so many people calling you ugly in public. Who ever cast the role purposely selected her, likely for political reasons, not because she best fit the role. As a Shakespeare frequent reader, I'd rather pick on the fact that the actress clearly looks more mature than Tom Holland. Romeo is supposed to be around 17 and Juliet around 14. DiCaprio and Danes, while not the same age as their characters, did give off this youthful naive energy, which is necessary for the story. It's young love. And while we know Tom Holland can pass as a teenager(he already did so playing Peter Parker), but she clearly looks too old to be playing a naive inexperienced teen girl madly in love with an older teen boy. It's not even how "beautiful" she is - there's nothing good makeup artists and stylists can't do.

Acting isn’t just being able to perform a part well. It also includes fitting the role in terms of looks, and some roles call for pretty people, some for average people, some for “ugly” people, some for skinny people, some for fat people, some for everything inbetween. Romeo and Juliet were young, Italian, and the archetypal good-looking lovers. It’s mean of people to state their displeasure at her looks, but the fact remains that she doesn’t fit the standard of beauty of the late 1500’s nor of today. I think people are sick of roles being cast to ensure a “woke” agenda, and she is unfortunately on the receiving end of the frustration.

👀 So you're thought process here is what exactly? That just because back in the day only men where able to act, because women weren't allowed we should all be happy with the way these HollyWEIRD elites think they can just shove THEIR agenda and narrative down people's throats and we should all just be fine with it? So that they can keep ruining more and more of the most beloved stories? And all for their idiotic narrative that many don't subscribe to to begin with? If anything I personally think it's more ridiculous and quite frankly rude the way they keep doing this crap. If they're so worried about people feeling "seen" and "represented" then why on earth can't they create NEW roles. NEW characters. Instead they, and seemingly you as well, believe people really should just be oh so happy that they are about to destroying yet ANOTHER great story and work of art in order to satisfy some delusional agenda... I would be more offended by the lack of creativity and the way they basically keep doing these "hand me down" roles for lack of a better way to put it. People are clearly fed up with it. As they should be. We used to be a lot more spoiled. Now days they went from one extreme side of the spectrum to the other. Doesn't make it acceptable. But hey we are ALL entitled to our own opinions. I am just a firm believer of writing new stuff at this point. No more ruining beloved stories. Especially when the majority of people do NOT sit there worrying about whether they feel "seen" or feel "represented". That whole idea is seriously so weird to me. NEVER in my life have I watched anything on tv and thought to myself that there wasn't enough of "diversity" in the cast. At least I NEVER did. Until very recently it never crossed my mind. But when they decided to make it into an actual issue by doing what they are well then I started noticing how far they took it already. Suddenly white people are now ALL EVIL. Based solely on their skin color...hmmm,🤔 if only there was an actual word to describe someone who thinks like that.... 👀Maybe. Just maybe, people just want to actually enjoy the story. Enjoy the movie. Not have to worry about political crap being shoved down their throats while yet another movie is changed and completely ruined. And instead of all men casting it's a Man pretending to be a woman and we are told to just accept it and go with the delusion. Its seriously ridiculous to me they wont just write NEW stuff!! If anything the fact they don't create new roles to fill their weird "quota", is actually offensive. Maybe they're just not talented enough but either way it's obviously not going well thus far so You'd think they'd try something else already. Finally catch on already. People just want a good movie without all the insanity!! I don't think that's to much to ask. But sure, it must just be because OP would enjoy a man playing a woman so much more. Let me tell you....🤦🤷👍👌 Nonetheless, I send my Best wishes to you and yours! 💖🙏💖 @@rachelhoward1970

Some people just want to vent frustrations on whatever they disagree with and others just enjoy making fun of the situation whilst others don't really care all that much if at all, but still give their opinion anyway. The actress is NOT entitled to be free from criticism or mockery, that isn't how reality works. In nature, you can do whatever you want and in return, anything else can do whatever to you right back. Pick a role in which the girl is supposed to be pretty and cast someone like her, people were going to mock it and there is no way anyone including her believed otherwise. This world is not entitled to caress people's feelings, no one really cares about what you feel, they have their own feelings that have priority over yours. By the way, why'd you bring up her age? It’s like the show ‘Merlin’ with a stunningly beautiful actress who played Morgana and a kind of plainer looking actress to play Guinevere. Many people commented on that so they tried to show Morgana with less makeup and Gwen with longer hair and lower cut necklines. It didn’t help much. Angel Coulby played Gwen and she looks great in everyday life but her looks noticeably did not shine in her role. There are some roles that a very beautiful actress is expected to be cast, like Juliet, Guinevere, Helen of Troy, Venus, Scarlett O’Hara, Queen Esther. People will definitely comment if a less than gorgeous actress is hired for such roles because otherwise that takes away from the willing suspension of disbelief. I do feel bad for this young actress. She shouldn’t be treated this way. Although, she would not have been my choice for the role.

Have to agree. Though it would be interesting to see what they do with her. The photos shared here are by far her best. She does have an interesting look… something different to traditional western beauty. Perhaps that was enough to catch Romeo’s eye. I loved R&J as a teen, but in the cold hard light of day I couldn’t deny it was essentially a story about an overly emotional and unstable young man (crying about his ex one day and ready to take his own life over Juliette the next) who lured a very young girl who was desperately lacking good and attentive parents and had a frankly irresponsible nurse/nanny and a priest who should have lost his job. Terribly unromantic of me, but they literally saw each other across a room, had one conversation with each other, got married the next day, spent one night together and then took their own lives. As a parent, I’d be pissed. (It does make for a good story though).

Most of the people criticizing her looks, would never watch Shakespearean plays in the first place. Conservatives need to pick their battles, aesthetics are not a hill to die on. And engaging in the culture this way just makes conservatives come across as a**holes. This is just art, this actress is a real person who doesn’t deserve this, and not every opinion needs to be shared. You don’t agree with the casting? Also, it doesn't matter as much how people look, there's an implied suspension of disbelief in plays regarding the actors' looks, race, even gender (it was the norm until not so long ago that all roles were played by men and men only) and all is left to their ability to create the character and perform it.

Hating on the girl because of her features is not better than hating on her because of her race. To be more specific. People often equate conventional beauty with Eurocentric features (e.g., smaller sharper nose). This would be the difference between Lupita Nyong’o and Dinai Gurira. Lupita has smaller keener facial features, which is more acceptable. People are calling her ugly because she doesn’t have stereotypical Eurocentric features. If she were black with stereotypical Eurocentric features, the hate wouldn’t be as bad, but then some people would still have issue with her being black. Case and point: People hated on Halle Bailey because she’s black and played Ariel, but she wasn’t being called ugly like this. Halle is light skinned and has more Eurocentric features. Point, they both got hate. Most just don’t consider Afrocentric features on unambiguous black people as beautiful. This is the primary reason. With that said, I do see the validity of people having a problem with casting, considering how Juliet has been portrayed historically; however, not fitting the historical physical impression of the character is secondary. To overlook someone because of the hate they might incur, outside of conduct, is not the answer. She can’t control her appearance outside of plastic surgery. The actress isn’t problematic and as far as we know, she hasn’t harmed anyone. We already know, most people don’t like or prefer Afrocentric features, so to limit opportunities or representation because of colorism and featurism is messed up.

Ok so Juliet is beautiful this woman is not what I’d call Juliet beauty you said a lot of nonsense beauty is subjective to the viewer but in this situation, it’s not just subjective I believe there must be certain criteria for the role of Juliet black or white this is much more believable for this movie since the story has been used as the basis of every forbidden love story for nearly a decade and why aren’t you complaining about Tom Holland he could replace Leopardo in titanic. Whether or not she looks white doesn't change the fact that there are way more beautiful black women in acting today if they were picked it wouldn't matter so outside of you crying racism do you have an actual argument, that Halley Balley argument wasn't a good one since the story of the little mermaid is based on the Disney tale of the same name that is based in the idea of Greek mythology while Romeo and Juliet Is a theater play that has been used many people to play the couple more than 100 times but this isn't some group high school students this is supposed to be a film that is meant to entertain and wow the audience so if a simple line of beauty can't be held for a character that was supposed to be beautiful then I don't think this movie can make me believe in this relationship (ps if they made a movie and made hitler black would you still bitch about it or go that’s fair enough let’s see how it goes based on your words I think you’d be pissed)

So as a result, it is also not uncommon for each one to have its own USP(s)--some more authentic; others more alternative/contemporary--this being an example pf the latter. Futhermore, tickets sold out in literally *TWO HOURS.* Why? The people who are complaining the most (the American internet) do not go to theatre; do not realise this is a play; do not understand theatrical casting; in several cases neither have passports nor have ever been to London; and most of all wouldn't travel to see it even if it was the whomever is considered to be the most beautiful white actress of the era--i.e. it's just more artificial outrage from those who have the privilege of boredom. Because the British public actually don't have anywhere near as much of an issue with it, and I am speaking from first-hand experience (if my spelling hasn't given it away already). Now, did the production company know this was going to happen by casting her? Of course; and I'm sure she was in on it too (as this isn't her first professional Shakespearean role). Because all this has done is give the play *HUGE* amounts of free publicity that a play wouldn't typically generate on its own as using mainstream celebrities to sell tickets has become a common practice now. Was it a cheap tactic? Absolutely. But are the sheep who fell right into it as enlightened as they think they are for having the opinions about it that they do? In no way shape or form whatsoever.

Either way, I wish diversity would finally start to come around in a way where the characters and stories themselves are written diverse to have authentic and specifically meant roles for such actors and actresses that really could use them so this sort of rather obvious race swap casting wouldn't have to really be the trend this is. Even in theatre, I can't imagine there'd be very many reasons to make somewhat nonsensical casting choices in terms of who fits what role, if not for... well, I'm guessing, diversity. I don't know if you even intended me with the American crowd criticism, but I'm Finnish. Just to be clear, if your job is actress, expect to be judged harshly on your looks. That's part of the job. If your supposed to be acting a role of a beautiful girl, and you're not beautiful yourself, ofcourse you will get backlash. She chose her career and auditioned for her role. She needs to be able to take the good with the bad.

@@rachel.0352 yes it does, that's part of the Job. If you're acting a role in the public eye and can't fit that image, you will be judged and scrutinized. Any job with a public role, such as a politician, or actor, will be made fun of if they don't look or act the part. If a 90 year old fat guy tried to play the role of Harry Potter he'd be mocked too. Just because you don't think it should be fair, doesn't mean it's not. The woman is not qualified to play the role because she doesn't fit the image, which is a minimum requirement for acting, yet you expect her to be free of the accountability of failure to meet that minimum requirement? And in a Public Role no less? If you can't meet the minimum requirement for a job yet still get hired, ofcourse you will be made fun of.

Well, the thing is, you don't have to deny reality, but beauty isn't an objective measure; it's subjective. People don't have to go online and air their opinions like "you are ugly" as if their opinions on the matter mean anything significant at all. Like the old saying, "If you don't have something nice to say, don't day it at all".

Producers knew this was going to happen. It is the same thing when Disney cast the black fairy for Pinocchio, the black Ariel for the little mermaid, the tanned Peter Pan for Wendy and Peter Pan, or Rachel Zegler as Snow White. I know hurtful comments about someone's Race, girlhood, or beauty standard are going to hurt a lot of people. However, These producers KNOW the backlash. THEY know people are going to comment on this issue. They do it on purpose. Hurting someone on purpose contains an EVIL element to it. The ordinary peasants (us) can be hurtful with words. But executives are evil because they do it to PROFIT from the Actor/Actress's hurt Self-esteem.

I never understood the controversy for this. The theatre hires anybody. They're colour blind and give the roles to ppl that normally wouldn't be of that race. This hate seems like a publicity stunt. The haters will hate and the sympathisers will pay to go watch.
