Today we're taking a look at a recent AI Generated South Park video that really might have just changed entertainment forever.
Created on a platform called AI Showrunner by Fable Studios, this new technology can create an entire episode of South Park from just a single prompt. We're going to take a look at the video, dig through the research paper, and discuss exactly who Fable Studios are.

Just watched the "ai takes over southpark" episode. Man, this is a tough one! My gut feeling is that this is a big hoax/publicity stunt being pulled off with Matt Stone and Trey Parker in on the joke. The voices and timing seemed deliberately made to help it feel "AI", but the jokes/messaging seemed like the south park creators making a dig at the idea of AI taking their jobs. If it really was written by chat gpt then it's pretty insane. BUT... having written that, I've just tried asking chat gpt to write a script for a similar episode, and although it's not quite as complex, it has striking similarities... so with the added system message promoting they gave it, it's more than possible. Seems like every day we have to re-define the boundaries of what we think is "realistic". 🤯

I’ll admit, I had a pretty healthy amount of skepticism when I saw it as well, the whole “fake website” didn’t help. But, the more I’ve dug into it, the more I’m thinking this is real. As you pointed out, GPT4 can produce some pretty good likenesses of episodes, that I think you could multi prompt into something that would work well. But more than that, If you really look at the episodes, they are super basic from an animated perspective, even for South Park standards. No walk cycles, no real movement as well. It’s a lot of static characters just delivering dialogue, That isn’t to say it isn’t super impressive, just more that this is fairly reasonable it terms of where the technology is right now. Again, a really cool feat that should be applauded, nonetheless.

As an art school grad (albeit a terrible one), my advice is: don’t sweat it. Focus on all the stuff you’re learning: art history, fundamentals. color theory etc. AI and tech will be used in combination with what you learn. To be 100% with you: careers in art have always been unstable. The real trick with it has always been to be malleable. Well, that and having the skill to convince people to pay you. If I truly have any advice for you it’s this: learn as much as you can. Assist you fellow students in their projects, build friendships and networks for after you graduate. Don’t stress (art students stress the most for some reason), and don’t hold on to “golden” ideas. Ideas are cheap and more will come. Good luck, friend!

Dale Gracey appears to be influenced by Yale Gracey, a renowned Disney imagineer known for his work on Disneyland's Haunted Mansion (in the 1960s). Yale was an expert in special effects and bringing stories to the real world, particularly through the "Leota Effect," (talking spirit in the Haunted Mansion) which shares intriguing parallels with The Simulation's desire to give lives to AI's.

I have also believed for the last seven years that interactive narrative AR character-driven stories will be the future. And the key to that will be shared real-time experience when several participants can join in a joint experience collectively. Good thing is that that we are getting close and closer to the hardware who could enable us this type of experience.

It's going to be really interesting when the AR Headsets meet AI Characters in a few years. Widespread adoption of the headsets will be slow, but once they become mainstream, I presume AI characters will be fully developed and ready for it. It's going to be wild. Weirdly, I think the slowest part of all that is the human element of putting on the headset/glasses.
@RaitisPetrovs-nb9kz
@RaitisPetrovs-nb9kz Жыл бұрын
@@TheoreticallyMedia I am slightly suspicious that adoption might happen extremely fast once people realise that there are two worlds with and without glasses. And the main drive, I assume, will be productivity, not entertainment which will be the primary motivation to keep the glasses on at all times. Also, entertainment and experiences will be embedded in all different kinds of activities as that is the only value that is left after the abundance and devaluation of knowledge. It is actually quite hard to imagine AR coupled with AI agents in the form of an experience where everything around us is interactive.
@TheoreticallyMedia
@TheoreticallyMedia Жыл бұрын
@@RaitisPetrovs-nb9kz Can't disagree. I also think Apple jumping into the game is going to significantly help. I'm not a die-hard Mac guy (I'll happily go cross platform), but if there's one thing they are extremely good at, it is messaging "you need this thing" via their ad campaigns. I think at some point we'll see AR touted as a lifestyle choice, and if you don't have them, you aren't "cool"-- That was always the problem with Google Glass-- They looked terrible and the messaging was off. Actually, the greatest example of all that was the Segway.

I mean, yeah. It “reels” like a South Park episode, but one that would be considered their worst. I will say, some of the jokes in the one I watched were ok, again on par with some of their worst episodes. I think a big part is how flat everything feels. Take Cartman for example: his vocal performance is actually super nuanced. He often goes from quiet to yelling, or blubbering to angry- often in the same sentence. That’s something an AI voice generator just can’t pick up on.

So imagine as a creator, or maybe you think you can't create stuff, either way anyone who wants to make their own animated series with their own characters they create could legitimately be doing this not long from now. Instead of sweatshops doing all the heavy animation lifting you use the ai to help animate for you. Of course the tech will need perfected more than this but a reality where you can make your own stuff for practically $0 by yourself is about to happen.

100% for years animation has been dogged by some fairly terrible labor practices, that will be a thing of the past. That said, those labor practices will still exist, but that’s a whole other issue… In the meantime, I don’t think we’re long away from someone being able to make a Cartoon Network level show at home. I think it’ll turn into a bit of what happened in the music industry with home recording & Spotify, there is going to be a lot more out there. Most of it will be bad, but there will be some great as well. And the big guys will still release as usual. I just hope we figure out a better payment system than Spotify!

@@thesawmoviesarelong well, first off I just have to absolutely compliment you on the user name. I fell off the Saw movies at some point, but I still maintain that the first one is a fantastic thriller. As far as the death of creativity, I think you can also look at all this as the empowerment of creative people. It’s why I put that little bit in the video where I mention (I think) you can rewrite the script. Taking the South Park out of this, if you have an AI generator that can produce an Animated Episode of something, based off a prompt- I think most creative people won’t be satisfied with whatever is initially generated. They’ll want to tweek, and change, and revise. Personally, I think AI serves as a great first draft, but you’ll always need a human to come in and make it into something worth watching.

@@TheoreticallyMediaI completely agree. Generally speaking, the big difference between games and movies is that games on one hand give agency to the consumer, but on the other hand also require consumer agency to work, so they can't be passively enjoyed like movies. AI could create a form of entertainment that can be consumed passively or be interacted with as the consumer pleases, a form of entertainment that is as enjoyable to watch passively as well it is when participating in it. Another interesting thought. Right now writers and actors protest against AI in the industry (amongst other things) or the threat they posses for their jobs. But actors have already appeared in games and lend their virtual likeness. The commercial models of that maybe could form the basis for compensating actors for us of AI look- (and act-) alikes.
@TheoreticallyMedia
@TheoreticallyMedia Жыл бұрын
@@trnogger it’s funny you mention that, I was actually going to poke around to see if SAG allows actors to work in video games during the strike. If so, get ready for a LOT of celeb voice work in Call of Duty 536, or whatever number they’re up to now. I do go back and forth on that passive/active aspect, because you’re right, we engage entertainment differently. I kind of wonder if there might be more of those “choose your own adventure” type shows like Black Mirror did. Branch points in a show where a character turns to camera and asks “what do you think we should do?” And then 20 minutes (or so) of passive entertainment before the next branch. I wouldn’t want every show to be that, but I could see it being a really cool personalized experience that you pop in and out of.

@@TheoreticallyMedia Well, there were several attempts of creating "interactive movies", but they all failed horribly as far as I know. A year from now, I’d say we’ll be looking at this, but with PlayStation 3 era fidelity. Maybe (likely) more.

Maybe? I don’t think it’s quite there yet, but yes, this is very much what the WGA strike is all about.

Yeah, they weren't great. But...as I often say: That is the worst it will ever be. It only gets better from here...
