22:23 the reason why the mosquitoes stack up like that is bc the level is AI generated, and how the code for them works is just to spawn offscreen slightly and move towards the opposite direction. The left side ones are easily outrun by the player, but there isn’t any failsafe for it, so it just stays offscreen as more mosquitoes spawn in. It gets to a point where so many have spawned in its ridiculous. That’s why most of the levels in this game feel so unfair, because it has the worst AI levels of all time

Sad to see that this fails not only as a Cuphead clone, but just a game in general… There was effort put into this game, I can tell, but I don’t think they knew the basic fundamentals of good game design. And it costing $20 was the nail in the coffin. Looks like a $10 game at most.

If people were wondering why it looked much better in the trailers, it was because the game was originally made in Adobe Flash, which is why nobody got any news of the Enchanted Portals game since 2020.

One thing i've noticed is that the game doesn't totally look like it took inspiration from 1930's cartoons. They look like they were inspired by Cuphead's inspiration from 1930's cartoons

When this game was announced I was one of the very first people to jump on it. Yeah it was obviously a Cuphead clone, but to me that just meant Cuphead had inspired its own subgenre. To me that didn’t detract from EP, it elevated CH. I made videos on it for reactions, trailer analysis, covering the Kickstarter, and I even interviewed Xixo themselves twice: once after the announcement and again following up with them after the failed Kickstarter. In fact, those interviews are still the highest viewed on my channel. They genuinely came off as passionate creatives who wanted to build something inspired by what they love. Unfortunately even back then I could tell their inexperience was leading to some poor decisions. When I asked them about what inspired their cool boss ideas they pretty much admitted they were just throwing whatever ideas they liked against the wall to see what sticks, which to me conveyed a lack of thorough planning. I had asked them if they’d promote the interviews, to which they said yes, but when I released said interviews and tagged them in the Twitter post all they did was “like” the tweet. When I asked if they were going to retweet it or promote it at all they responded that liking the tweet *was* their promotion, and while they were willing to (figuratively) sit down and interview with anyone who reached out to them, they weren’t going to actively bring attention to it. I still haven’t the foggiest idea why they made the decision to choose to squash free promotion (i asked why this is and brought up how they would repost fanart, to which they said if they shared one interview or news piece they’d have to share all of them and it would clutter their fans’ feeds with similar information they didn’t think was interesting, but they could pick and choose which fan art they liked). Then this odd mentality expanded soon after the Kickstarter failed and they ceased all social media presence for a long time, total silence. It led me to think that maybe the project had fallen through? Only for them to come out of nowhere and drop the next teaser with the native Americans that *really* wasn’t well received (side note: insensitive as it was, I don’t wholly blame them as they’re from Spain and totally divorced from American history. Not saying they couldn’t have done their research, but it’s more understandable as they didn’t have a relationship with the culture being depicted). After that, total media blackout *again* until, well, just prior to the game’s release. I had hopes for this game. I wanted it to be great. I supported it best I could from day one, but sadly they kept making it harder and harder to support them with baffling decisions. The entire thing reeks of two naive, inexperienced but passionate creatives who just got in over their heads and didn’t know how to do any better. I truly hope Daniel and Gemma take this as a learning experience and don’t get discouraged. I, and many others, want them to be better.

@@positivea9111 The Cuphead devs were in a pretty similar place during its development, and seemingly everything was against them: making a game composed almost entirely of the old early 20th Century Rubber Hose art style is expensive and time-consuming, the difficulty was clearly not meant to be beginner friendly, and they were only charging $20 for it. If the game flopped it would've been absolutely devastating for all of them. Not to mention all of the other highly acclaimed AAA titles that released during 2017 could've easily made people not give it the time of day. But they were determined to get through it all by whatever means necessary, and there were probably other issues I haven't listed here. For Enchanted Portals though, I feel like they weren't committed enough or were aware of the risks and complications that naturally come with Kickstarter projects, or maybe both. Ignoring criticism obviously didn't help either. This isn't the first time this has happened though, many people still remember the train wreck that is Mighty No. 9, which failed for many of its own reasons despite having experienced developers from the industry working on it and receiving over 4× as much money as they were asking from fans. Passion and ambition alone will not guarantee a quality product that's successful, you absolutely need to know what you're doing and not be afraid for things to go south

Why did the trailers look SO much better, you may ask? Because the trailers were fully animated by some other studio! And the game was built off from it, mimicking the style. That's why certain parts of the game are just completely different or missing. And you can tell when the devs just gave up and cut corners to push the game out ASAP.

There's a difference between a good difficulty and a bad difficulty. Good difficulty is pattern based, you can get used to it and get better and better. Bad difficulty is... This. Enemy spam and RNG.

The difficulty is bad because the levels are completly random. They're computer generated That's why there are levels where you'll end up with 15 enemies chasing you

There's a few other bad things that weren't pointed out...every time you die, the level CHANGES! ITS AI GENERATED! As well as that...there's basically an illusion of difficulty. The only thing that makes each difficulty harder is health spawning rates...THATS IT.

Procedural generation isn't the same thing as AI generated, the developers still had to make all the individual level sections. They just wrote a program to stitch them together rather than build everything out by hand (and in this instance it turned out poorly)

The impression I get is that the Devs have a decent bit of experience with animation but that this is their first attempt at actually making a game. There is absolutely some skill in the animation but a lack of discipline and imagination in the level design and gamedesign.

22:45 You can actually string, just dash and immediately press the pause button, then unpause and dash again. It's a bug that does some weird stuff to the game's background, but it doesn't crash it or anything

I think the lack of anticipation animations/sounds hurts the game and the little animation that is there gets lost in the enemy/projectile spam. Cuphead’s sound design lets you know when something is coming lol

A game like this really makes me imagine if Cuphead had Steam Workshop support. I think the ppl who made this game would have been one of the more popular modders if that was the case. Unfortunately though, we got a game that had plenty of creativity but none of the programming prowess.

If the enemies weren't randomly generated and had meticulous placement, it could be more forgivable... And perhaps a limit on how many entities can spawn on screen.

Or at the very least set boundries for where they can spawn. Dead cells did this where there are set locations where enemies can and cant spawn, what enemies can spawn there, etc. This game just checks one of those boxes on where enemies can spawn, there's no limit on what type spawn in or how many can spawn at once. Like theres an entire section of gators and there's arbitrary spaces between them because their placement is computer generated and they dont respect where the actual platforms are

The reason so many mosquitos spawned is that for some insane reason, enemy spawns are tied to your position in the level. If you go fast, a ton of enemies spawn at once

It's not bad because it's inspired by cuphead, it's bad because it's completely unoriginal. If it used the same style and had mostly bosses and stuff it would be fine, but there's constant enemy spam, unbalanced attacks (the tri shot is just better than the single shot from what i can tell because it shoots just as fast with as much range) the animations for jumping and dashing are literally the same ones from cuphead, and the bosses are just really boring because unlike cuphead bosses which have multiple attacks per phase usually, these bosses have like 1 or 2. Nothing is explained, the boss deaths are abrupt, the only thing good are the animations but even most of those are mediocre, some of them are good, like the knights in the background, and then there's the stiffness of the movement after the artstyle change in the witch fight and it just looks so bad. The breakable object placement is bad too. For example: you could make a little room where you have to break a wall or something while there are unkillable enemies attacking you so you have to manage dodging and breaking the wall, but instead they decide "hey we should put one at the beginning of the level where it does absolutely nothing to affect the level in any way other than making it more tedious to start."

It's definitely a style over substance kinda thing. There's literally no reason for the artstyle to change. Also my God, I kept getting mad at the snakes slithering out of the pot and inexplicably missing frames. I genuinely don't know how they didn't catch that.

I'd say their biggest mistake was copying the difficulty. They would've gotten by just fine if it was really easy to beat, but trying to mimic difficulty without understanding how to make a hard game good can cripple you.

I think I got an idea, what if someone modded the game to clean up the controls, tweaked thd enemy generation so the color coded enemies are just a select encounters, and modified the platforming as well as add in save points

I think I admire this game. It is brazenly a cuphead ripoff and lacks a ton of polish, but Cuphead is inherently so hard to copy that the effort alone admirable in its own way.

I think it was made by only a couple people and the kickstarter failed, honestly I feel really bad. I hope they can manage a project that succeeds at some point

I am glad this came out, shows how not to make a game like Cuphead, with random levels, the enemies and what set pieces show up is random each run in a level, the enemy spawn is also random hence why so many can spawn at once, even if there are a lot at once they should only take 1-2 hits before they are defeated, the tutorial does not do a good way of telling you anything, just images and no button prompts or text explaining anything, and there really should be a short hop, some sports just look unable to get through. Also there are blind spots in many bosses Also did he actually refund the game? It is crazy how they are the same price in USD

The game looks as if the graphics were made by 5-6 different animators each with different standards. Some assets seem to have a decent rubberhose style like Cuphead, some are made with blatant auto-tweening made like Flash, some have a choppy framerate, and some are just static images that are moved and rotated. You can see the cut corners everywhere.

This whole game seems like awful Mario maker levels held together by paperclips and PNGs. With all the random enemy spawns combined with the randomly generated levels, it's just a conga line of pain

If they only had an update that fixes issues like slow weapon changing and added invincibility frames so that you don't get hit a million times by a single projectile then the game would be pretty good

For me this is even worse than "cuphead at home", as cuphead at home could have been just more cuphead for people who wanted more cuphead. The problem is it's just straight up a bad game and it costs more than cuphead! What the heck!?

The tutorial looks horrible! No explanations about the attacks, jump or dash. No clues about changing the weapons. The game throw you there and put a hundred enemies, that's not fun! If it was like Cuphead tutorial, it would be easier 🙂 The animation is pretty and the music is nice but the controls looks awful, the bosses are not very creative; A cow, a frog, a giant boat. They are all in Cuphead. Chester winchester, the brothers frogs, the pirate. A giant urchin would be nice to fight, a elf-archer too. They go well with the worlds. There's not a lot of freedom in the game. You go to point A to B with one checkpoint, millions of enemies who are hard to avoid and kill then fight the boss... who is not moving a lot and has one attack. If it was a mini-opne world where you can choose which level, that would be better!

What throws me off is the terrible/non existent sound design and the theming of the game. When you look at the main characters, you'd expect a fairytale or mystical theme of some sort. When in reality we get the chicken mafia and the dollarstore matrix. What I also hate is that all the run and gun maps are AI generated. Like... what??
