A couple on a first date clash over astrology.
THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS is used with permission from Alexander Christenson. Learn more at alexanderchristenson.tv.
They swiped right. Now one potential couple are on their first date, and all seems to be going well... until they begin talking about astrology.
This short is a modern riff on one of the most fundamental stories of the human condition: two people meet, circle one another as they try to figure out if they're a fit and then clash over differences.
But it's what happens during the date and afterwards that makes this a unique and intriguing film. What starts off with the trappings of a romantic comedy quickly becomes more resonant, thanks to finely honed, compelling dialogue and acutely poignant performances that deepen the initial personae that both main characters present to one another. Both actors render the tension, conflict and attraction between them with great skill and sensitivity, feeling like full-fledged people in the span of under 15 minutes.
THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS then goes to a deeper place of self-reflection, questioning why we self-sabotage our own aspirations for happiness and feel the need to judge others so quickly and harshly. The result is a film that goes beyond its topic of dating and romance, and feels vulnerable, achingly open and courageously personal.

Three things: 1. That guy was very humble to run back and admit his mistakes. 2. A lot of people do that exact very same thing; grabbing on to arguments they know or think they know very well to make themselves feel bigger meanwhile inadvertently making others feel small. 3. It’s a great thing to be humble in our lives and to accept humility with full open arms even when we think we have all the answers.

It might not have been, but she was still right in doing it. She hadn't invested a lot into him, nor did she have any particular reason to suspect it would result in an unusually valuable relationship, so she might as well try somebody else instead. Of course, there's an argument to be made that their relationship would have emotional depth from the very start, but imo that is better left for a later stage of a relationship so she might as well just drive off and be content to have done a good deed for somebody else (that is if he is smart enough to actually benefit from the valuable lesson she taught him)

...But it's not an astrology thing. That's when someone ignores your individual qualities to fit all of you into some external bucket. "Because you're a Gemini" is fundamentally the same as: "because you're a woman" or "an immigrant" or whatever. To that person, "you're not you because you're you; you're you because of some other concept I've learned...that you remind me of" This is aggravating, but it's okay. This dives deep into the heart of our insecurities. We often use 'knowledge' as a weapon. She says, 'who cares if it's real, it's a way in'. He soon realizes he was hiding behind being 'right', when that's not the road to connection. We do that in an attempt to be 'right' , to bolster our egos and to avoid the uncertainties of connecting with others. We will find peace when we let others have their own views/realities. We're not here to fix anyone. Everyone needs the elbow room to have their own beliefs.

Stacey Kersting I like your comment. It conveys that you have done massive inner work. You understand mechanism of dogmatism and ego within you as with others. I wish if more people were like you and they exit autopilot mode when their belief system pop up to evaluate or judge contradictions by others. Its really hard. Dogma and taking sides is hardwired in us to maximize survival. Mechanism Survival is cause of all evil but evil has been beneficial to the survival of us as our ancestors did atrocities to others so that we survive and appear in this world.

I think what some people don't understand is that he is "lonely" and "angry" and that's all the result of his past experiences. His perception of life as well as his ego probably caused failures in his relationships. So he probably has little to no friends. So when they met, he was so happy to feel like he was not alone anymore. He was able to "connect" with another person. Then she brought up a topic that doesn't fit his views. It seems to me that in the moment of their argument, they revealed a real piece of themselves to each other, which is their views on life. While she made an attempt to make a real connection with him his ego had to get in the way. Now, No other girl he's been with has been that real with him to tell him what he needed to hear, which which made him take some time to self reflect and realize she was right, which is not the usual thing for him. He realized she WAS different. And in a desperate attempt to fix what might not be fixable, he ran after her to give himself some closure. Now, he probably wasn't sure what to expect from that but I don't think it mattered. He made her laugh. If that was the end of things then at least it ended with him making her laugh.

I feel like maybe many are so caught up in the subject matter and the debate that they are missing the point. It comes down to the fact that while his convictions may be right, he was dismissive and rude toward her. He assumed that she really truly believes it and is therefore stupid. He could have taken a gentler approach to find out that she just does it for fun, not because it's real. He summarized her personality based on a few things she wrote down, but he didn't really take the time to know her. He classified her as "basic," as shallow, as this idea of someone with no real substance, and when he realized he was wrong, it was too late. It's about balancing truth with compassion, honesty with kindness. Human interaction requires both. Isolated, one either becomes dulled by a fantasy world or they are too callous and they push everyone away just to be right. It's about giving people the time and consideration to reveal themselves without diving in and trying to label them. I do think that astrology is kind of an ironic point to base the narrative around, since that itself is often used to try to presume a person's personality before they reveal it to you. Although she uses it to get to know people, there are others who do use it to immediately label and assume things about a person, so I can empathize with some level of apprehension of the subject. Still, he could have been kinder.

Sometime we feel bad cause we can't do anything except to say sorry. It isn't always easy to prove that you're sorry and it isn't easy to change to be better to. This was a great piece. I would have loved a little comedic relief moment from the driver. As a former uber driver, I was always breaking up the tension with a quick and witty comment. But overall, it made me evaluate how we hide behind our opinions and use our own knowledge as a means to tear people down instead of building people up. Also, I love how in the end he didn't get the girl. He got something much better; Perspective!

Reading astrology before meeting the person was a thing for me because it feeds my curiosity, wanting to know as much as possible about this person. But, I realized it haunts me during the date as I was looking out for clues that fits to the astrology descriptions. I was not connecting with him. I was labeling him. After that, I try to restrict myself for not asking about his birthday or even check his facebook profile. I want to learn about him as a person.

He should’ve read out a list of different astrology descriptions to her, then asked her to discern which one actually specifically described her. Instead of yabbering “science” all the way through. Now THAT is the spirit of science. Experimenting.

The writing and acting is really good in this. As always. But I think here, in a miniverse, to show such a conflict? Amazing with what people come up with. These characters are more alive than some of the 2 dimensional ideas quite a few bigger movies try to create in hours. It's ambitious to fit this drama into such a short time and everything is so beautifully executed. There is never a moment where it slows down because every shot is used as it should. Truly a great short.

I just think its good practice to avoid the word “hate” altogether when you’re first meeting someone cuz people might get the wrong idea. They can interpret it as anything from mild annoyance to staying up all night thinking about how astrology types killed your wife and took your dog. There’s just a lot of weight to it, and you’re trying to make a good first impression and those can easily go awry. You can genuinely vocalize your dislike of something that somebody else does without being a d-bag, even if it’s a deal breaker.
