Just fun info...The USS CONSTITUTION (OLD IRON SIDES) is constructed with White Oak and Southern Live Oak. The outer and inner horizontal hull boards are White Oak and the vertical boards are Live Oak. The Navy maintains a White Oak forest in Indiana for the sole purpose of maintaining the ship. Nathan, thanks for the shout out. You did a great job quarter sawing the log, your movements and rotations were spot on. With your skill and experience, you make it look easy. Quarter sawing used to be a time consuming, wood wasting pain in the rear, and with this Reverse Roll Quarter Sawing technique its predictable and fast. You are correct, I named it Reverse Roll Quarter Sawing because it goes against conventional quarter sawing techniques, rotating in the opposite direction, which is more natural, and sawing log halves instead of quarters. So its twice as fast and wastes half the wood. It also has the advantage of allowing "freestyle" adjustments of the toe boards to home in on the ray fleck while making the initial small wedge cuts, whereas in conventional quartersawing, the initial scouting boards are taken through through the middle of the quarter and so the highest probability of a "miss" is in the widest and most valuable boards in the log. So RRQS eliminates that. Very well done, and great job explaining things! I really enjoy watching your videos.

Quarter sawn white oak is probably one of my all time favorite woods.

I recently refurbished a century old desk made of quarter sawn oak. Massively thick boards you would not find on oak furniture today.

I've found you don't have to be crazy in this world, but it helps. Love the out takes.

I had quarter sawn white oak cabinet doors and drawer installed when I had our home built in 1993. Never get tired of looking at the rays in beautiful white oak!

Those rays really pop for sure. I’ve cut a few mantles for folks lately that were full of those medullary rays. Looking at the from different angles and in different light conditions really makes quarter sawn lumber special. Thanks for sharing.

I've never seen a log sawn that way, and I found it very different. 5/4 sawing on the apex of the first cut was very unique. I bet that makes one very nice table, once it is built. I guess only a man sitting on the edge of the Ozark Mountains in SW Missouri could make such a statement, due to just not liking having to hand split it for firewood. Thnak you for the explanation on how you get quarter sawn wood from the log. I will hit the link to the reverse method to better understand this. I love the rays that come with quarter sawn boards, I guess that’s why the premium price. The waste has a lot to do with the price well. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and the family.

You spoke of knots an interesting thing I've found with quarter sawing a log with a knot.with a knot the rays tend to grow in a circular pattern around the knot it is most breath taking grain

A real nice slaaaa Nathan! White oak quarter sawn is truly one of the great beauties in the world of wood. Talk about the perfect log! I always think of the Arts and Crafts movement, which is one of my very favorite styles. Quarter sawn then after built the furniture was place in a chamber of ammonia, which made it turn that lovely brown black color. Of course natural has a beauty that is true to behold! Kind Thanks! Those wedge off cuts would make decent fence posts around cattle, goats or sheep. They can last for years.

Good explanation on 1/4 sawing. First cut looks promising. Tried to picture in my head how it was done not what I figured. And the water does justice to the grain.
