Polina Edmunds joins us to break down the women's event at the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships. Kaori Sakamoto defended her title, Haein Lee earned a strong silver, Loena Hendrickx won bronze, and Isabeau Levito, Mai Mihara and Kim Chae-yeon rounded out the mix. Amber Glenn, Bradie Tennell and Maddie Schizas had some up and down moments. And it wasn't the Worlds that Yelim Kim would've wanted. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

My moment of the competition was learning that kaori's 2a in the sp had a speed of 18 km/hr. Only for Belinda to reveal in the fp that kaori thought that had been slow and then clocking a freaking 21 km/hr speed on the free 😱 Simply spectacular.

I’m surprised and shocked over Polina’s comments regarding Amber Glenn. Does she not understand the scoring system. That she should have scored higher. 10-15 points higher? Let me tell you how she didn’t get these points. It is called missing jumps in combos. All season long, she did was -3T, -2T. She missed two jumps. She could add -eu 3S; But, if she can’t do this. Why not -2T 2A seq? She loses 5-10 points there. Also, two 3Lo is REP. She should have placed in 13th behind Schizas.

All season long I have been rooting for Kaori. She skated her SP with the most confidence, energy, freedom, and security we have seen all year. Love, love, love. What a highlight of the event! I was nervous for her FS and my heart dropped when she singled the flip but I was so impressed when she immediately pulled off the triple toe after. She showed mental strength and experience when she pulled off the three jump combo and the loop at the end of the program after the error on the triple triple. She should be so proud of how much she has grown throughout her career and really this year alone. Branching out stylistically while keeping her strong jumps, competing after an especially draining Olympic season last year, defending her title....she has accomplished so much. She was so upset after her FS and she talked about how she didn't want to make the same mistake she did four years ago. I hope she isn't too hard on herself because her growth and resilience is very admirable. I mean no disrespect to the other skaters but in my opinion Kaori is carrying this discipline on her shoulders right now. Many of these women have so many great qualities but are missing something, whether it's wonky technique or not having more interesting, engaging programs and performance quality, etc. I don't think I'm going to go back and rewatch many of these performances. Haein and Loena are beautiful skaters but need better programs, I know they are capable of sooo much more. I wonder about how in the past 8 or so years under the reign of Eteri, that empty and formulaic style was considered the golden standard by the judges that even without her skaters present here, we can see the impact present in what kind of skating we're seeing overall.

Let's not pretend that all her skaters are the same in terms of artistity. I agreed that a poor tecnique was expanded and determined on pre-puberty bodies, and that's a bad thing. However, Alyona Kostornaya's Angel SP(2019) was a real art product

Also I thought Chae-yeon Kim deserved more discussion. She had such grown up and sophisticated programs. It did take me aback a little to see such a mature long skate program for a young woman. But I think this long game approach to incorporating more sophisticated music choice and choreography at a younger age is smart and will prepare her better in the next few years.

I respect Polina's expertise as a competitive skater- I personally think she focused a LOT on the jumps here. My favourite part of the whole event was Kaori's SP step sequence; Polina didn't go into choreography, musical interpretation etc., in as much depth. I would have liked to hear what she thought about programs other than "it was great". I understand that it is frustrating when technical errors are ignored. But I really don't agree with the rhetoric Polina gave that people with edge issues on their jumps shouldn't be on the podium (25:05). When I look back at Mao Asada, my favourite performance of hers is Sochi 2014 Rachmaninoff (where she has a flutz), not that one competition where she did a lutz properly. Jumps should be judged properly, but all the other elements are important too.
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson Жыл бұрын
I agree with that
@johnjackson3735
@johnjackson3735 Жыл бұрын
On the other hand, Polina eloquently expresses what many of us are frustrated about in particular preferential scoring for certain skaters like Kaori, who basically receives tech call immunity on her suspect triple lutz edge with high GOE near +2 in both the SP and LP and to my eyes she had one hooked (ur) landing on her triple jump combo ignored. Even with this beneficial, Kaori's base tech score for completed elements in the long program was about 7 points lower than Haein Lee's, yet her advantageous scoring allowed her to close the gap to 2 points after also receiving more generous scoring than Haein Lee in the SP as well. Meanwhile, overly harsh tech calls are made against her opponents like the q call on Haein Lee's beautiful triple lutz / triple toe combo with deflated GOE of -.10. In my opinion, Kaori was also overscored in PCS compared to Haein Lee with the 5 points extra Kaori received in PCS being more than the difference in their final scores; therefore it is clear to me that Haein Lee should be the real World Champion. I believe Kaori is a very good skater, but I personally prefer more graceful skaters with less overt pumping of the body to gain speed like Haein Lee and I also prefer Haein Lee's musicality and intricate and agile steps, expressions bladework, erect posture and grace more. Comments were just removed and disabled under Haein Lee's freeskate video and the Ladies Freeskate video was removed altogether at about the same time, both of which contained a great deal of disagreement with the scoring and results. This strikes me as kind of a silent confession of scoring manipulation and demonstrates that as much as I disliked the great scoring favoritism in favor of Eteri skaters a similar kind of beneficial scoring is now being given in my opinion at least to Kaori.

@@johnjackson3735 This has been the case for her in Japan for years. Just ask any Rika or Wakaba fan how ridiculous the JSF has been in its favoritism for Kaori over everyone.
@johnjackson3735
@johnjackson3735 Жыл бұрын
@@joeyartk Yes, I will never forget 2018 Nationals when Rika should have won with two triple axels in the long program. It is especially aggravating because Rika could have just flutzed away and taken the pressure off her chronic ankle injury, but she didn't receive the teflon tech immunity and PCS, GOE inflation of Kaori.The ISU is really shooting itself in the foot because they could have created a rivalry between Japan and South Korea by giving Haein Lee the victory she deserved with a classically graceful style favored by so many like me and others but they had to force the scoring manipulation down people's throats.
@joeyartk
@joeyartk Жыл бұрын
@@johnjackson3735 I believe the whole fairytale about Kaori having such great quality technique was cooked up between her team and JSF so that she could try to compete with Rika, despite Kihira's content being miles above Sakamoto. The JSF have always hated Wakaba, so they just continued to perpetually nitpick and lowball her compared to Kaori. You notice this really took off following the season Kaori showed she had no chance whatsoever of doing Quads or a 3A. What is most frustrating is that while being touted as cleaner and more technically superior, Kaori actually uses alot of poor, cheated technique to hide her flaws on several jumps. Rika doesnt have edge issue, and Wakaba at least tries to do her flip correctly. Kaori on the other hand tries to disguise her lutz edge until changing to inside at the last minute. She also jumps most jumps with a circular entry to make it harder to spot her pre-rotation and often under rotated landings. Her whole speed skater style is to hide her lack of grace, yet it is celebrated as superior, Lol. Same goes for often cheat assisted jumps with the abnormally low arc that are also lauded. The judges are well aware of these things, yet completely ignore and even reward them. The only exception was Worlds a few years ago when the US needed to qualify 3 spots for the Olympics. Then they actually called Kaori on a few things. That tells you all you need to know about ISU integrity. Lol

Dave, you were right. You said at the beginning of the season that the level of competition and performances (in most of the disciplines) would be down but that things would be more back to normal by worlds. So many of the individual competitors and teams rose to the occasion. This worlds felt so organic and the unpredictability of the ladies’ competition in particular was refreshing when compared to more recent seasons. The outstanding crowd and many inspiring performances across all the disciplines made this worlds a joy to watch. Not having the Russians competing and their federation’s influence over the judging panels really has felt as if a dark cloud over the sport has been lifted.

I agree 100% with Johnathan, as I too am ‘jonesing’ for more classical warhorse music in skating programs these days. As someone who used to go to both live skating competitions and Stars on Ice every year (back in the 90s), I was always amazed at how much more elegant the top skaters looked on ice when they were skating to iconic classical music versus the pop/rock musical selections. Personally, if a skater possesses beautiful line and has the ability to move like a ballerina, it’s just tragic to see that type of skater use Top 40 music, as it really doesn’t bring out the beauty in their skating. When the ISU changed the music rules, I think it cheapened the overall look to the sport.

I thought Polina's comments on Isabeau were spot on, particularly regarding the lack of freedom of movement and that being a maturity thing. That makes so much sense. I also agree about Loena. The first half of her free skate was such a snooze that I found myself wondering if she had changed the music because I didn't remember it being so boring earlier in the season. I personally wonder if women's skating all looks the same now (Kaori excepted) because we've had several years of essentially only Russians with all the same choreography and all the same style winning, so it's seemed like that's the only way to win. I also hate that later skaters automatically get higher PCS and GOE just for going later. I notice it even more in the men's event, where we see early skaters with good skating skills and choreography and performance level (Graham Newberry from GB comes to mind) get way lower GOE and PCS than say, Daniel Grassl.

I loved men's event. It was some of the best skating I've ever seen. I think Jun should've won but Shoma was good, too, despite the mistakes. The women's event was interesting. Haein was awesome and I was kinda shocked not to see her win. I have complicated feelings about this event because, yes, pcs-wise it was a great event, and yes, it's nice to see how fast Kaori's 2A is, but it's still only a 2A and this is a sport, everyone should try to push the boundaries. Nobody in top 5 tried any ultra c, not even a loop combo which does bring the level back to 2017. And everyone kept talking about wrong edges with the Russian girls but top 5 here still had a bunch of uncalled edges. Artistically, I liked watching the programs here but the Russian local competitions were just more exciting for me as a viewer. And the best women's competition this season is still Junior Worlds, Mao was epic! Next season, I think I'll move to watching mainly men, hopefully everyone will stay injury-free and will be able to deliver their best skates.

KSU doesn't make any choices on who to send to what competitions. With competitions like JGP, 4CC, Junior/Senior Worlds, University Games and Youth Olympic Games, the top rankers from the qualifying events AUTOMATICALLY qualify. For JGP, the skaters themselves (in order of their placement at the qualifier) also choose which event to compete at. Similarly, skaters choose which challengers to compete at and if there are too many wanting to compete at the same event, they get cut off according to national team rankings. If skaters don't want to compete at a competition, they can withdraw. Haein was supposed to compete at JWC last season but withdrew after getting silver at 4CC and Ahsun replaced her (because she was the first sub according to nationals result).

100. They either have to be pretty and girly , delicate or do tangos. That seems to be the vast majority of styles. i enjoyed Nina from Estonia, Leona short, kaori’s short just to name a few of top ones. Anything with personality basically! It isn’t rewarded enough to perform or embody a piece when you can get away with just wafting hands around and a delicate face to a ‘classic’ (as in phantom etc no offence to haein, great skater and she won’t have chosen it) or classical style. Pretty dress, pretty arms but dull. Korean skaters and many Japanese (bar wakaba and kaori) seem to do this. Beautiful dresses., lovely presentation, zero individuality. Such a shame as I think there is so much potential so that’s prob why it annoys me! Miahara on other hand is lovely skater but she skated the same to her free as she does everything else and I assume that was supposed to be feisty ! Someone low down in technical can do something original and with personality and they don’t get rewarded so I assume many think why bother!

I think Haien Lee should have won the World Championships. She made no mistakes other than those given by tech crews who gave biased calls favoring Kaori relatively and judges deflated her PCS and GOE. Haein Lee has beautiful grace, smooth fluidity and fast skating with smooth jumps, great musicality and step sequences attuned to the music and even in Japan she brought the crowd to their feet with a standing ovation.Kaori's suspect lutz edge was ignored and even given a high GOE like 1.94 in for the SP and the LP. I also noticed a ur hook in the ice (ur) in the middle of one of her triple combo jumps in the long program that was ignored. Even with this advantageous scoring, Kaori's base value in the LP based on executed elements was a full 7 points lower, and this in addition to the overly harsh q and low GOE call on Haien's beautiful triple lutz / triple tope with -.10 GOE. So, Kaori's 7 points deficit in the LP is reduced to 2 or 3 points and she is given an overly generous 5 points PCS cushion across the SP and LP and more beneficial GOE. Kaori has been consistently scored more generously in Japan even among her own teammates as evidenced by 2018 Nationals which Rika Kihira should have won in my opinion.

Flip & lutz edges are of course important, but if they are the only flaw in a program, that’s not a reason to be kept off a podium. That’s a weird argument to make. Of all potential errors one could make, that one does nothing to affect any other aspect of the program. Take the “e” or “!”deduction for that element & move on. It’s a minor error in the big picture.

I thought some of the scoring was a bit over inflated. I would have put Kaori first in the short program, but I thought the cushion with a short program score close to 80 was a bit too much. The cushion was too much for Hae-in to overcome in the free (there's also the argument Kaori's long program score of 145 was too high). So that was suspect, but there is always the home country scoring effect, which is a given. But going back to Hae-in, she generally skates clean, so to see her scoring rise as of late compared to previous years really confirms that the Koreans and her in particular, were underscored with the judging all corrupted by the politics only just a year ago (team Eteri predominating, but also team USA and others playing a role for a piece of that pie as well).

Like K-pop trainees before they debut, they rarely have a holiday, lots of learning and a hardcore training with overall 10 hrs a day. Always have a monthly evaluation with dance, solo, and group performances. Studying for a regular high school runs 12-16 hours a day. The after-school study is very common. But they don't consider this a sport, and the injury risk increases with more exhaustion. I guess Korean doesn't take exhaustion as an excuse not to compete.

The judging was truly terrible. Nina Petrokina and Nina Pinzarrone were super-harshly judged and both deserved better ranking and much higher scores. Chayen Kim deserved to win the FP, but all in all HAEIN LEE was robbed the gold medal she actually deserved. Isabeau was overscored in the short in which Kimmy Repond was underscored. So, apart from the catastrophic judging, I believe something should seriously be changed in the rules because, as of now, the SP events are unwatchable. Even with the crème de la crème it is impossible to sit through the SP and watch the skaters performing the same structured programs ad nauseam. With all that being said, we did not miss the Russians at all. The best moment to me was the medal ceremony when Kaori reached to the crowd to provide a Belgian flag for Loena Hendrickx.
