Nana was an anime way ahead of it’s time. It’s completely amazing how the problems in the story still relate to people this day. I’m a guy and honestly Nana K’s problems were so relatable. Falling in love easily, Dealing with someone who cheated on you and so much more. Nana isn’t that happy go lucky romantic anime like the others. That what gives it so much appeal. I wish more anime was mature like this.

I hated Nanas friends sooo much, first trying to gaslight her that her boyfriend wasn’t actually cheating and making her believe it was all her fault. Later when she was pregnant, they made her believe she’s the cheater, although she didn‘t. Then telling her she has to be with the toxic baby daddy, bc he has money, although he doesn’t seem like the guy who would care emotionally for her. I dislike her hometown friends so much. 😵‍💫

Very minor detail to include but Nana isn't actually a shoujo manga, it's Josei, which means its target demo are women or young ladies who are just going through life. Which makes it all the more wild that you're taken on a personal ride through a young womans life to find herself, but shes not a hero, there's not a single obstacle for her to overcome. It's just life.

Maturing is realizing that we all know somebody who reminds us of a character. I don’t hate anyone despite how frustrating or annoying they might be.

It's so depressing that the manga (which the anime is nearly one for one with until they had to throw together an ending) will likely never be finished :/

What i like bout nana is that its realistic and bout life, love, friendship, and experience. Its not bout monsters and fighting demons.

i watched that anime like 6 times now. Loved it every time and cried every time. I've recommended it to every single person i know.

Nana adheres really closely to the manga - so if you enjoyed that adaptation, definitely check out mangaka Yazawa Ai other work too, like Paradise Kiss. Paradise Kiss also got an anime - that's the one that got me hooked! Shoujo and josei really don't get enough attention but there are lots of gems.

Hachi says the same words to Nana- that even tho it's painful sometimes, if you keep on living good things can happen. Nana is all about that that's why both Nanas' keep on living even if the dreams they once had turned into sad reality. Personally, each time i rewatch Nana i learn something new about life. That's the power of this show.

The pregnancy test episode gave me second hand anxiety

I watched this anime right after falling out with a friend and it made the grief extra painful. However as time has passed and I think about my love for these characters it makes me reflect on the times I had with my friend too, and that life is painful and challenging. It’s such an amazing and mature anime that I will always recommend.

The best animes are not necesarilly the ones that impress you after watching the finale. The best animes are the ones that keep you thinking about them "man, that was really good" even few years after.

I'm an oldtaku, i came into anime with the hyperviolent ovas of the 80s and 90s. The throwback art style of Nana caught my attention on netflix years ago, and as a fan of punk and hard rock the soundtracks drew me in. This show has lived in my head ever since. I watched the whole seriea in probably 2 days and spent the last few episodes bawling my eyes out. This show is amazing and its something i unashamedly suggest to all my friends.

Still haven't seen the anime yet, but I have read the entire manga -- at least as far as the manga got. I really liked this story, and these people became like friends. The fact that it ended like it did, or rather didn't end is probably for the best, because I'm pretty sure it didn't necessarily end well for everyone.

I just finished today the series,, and i dont know i m crying after knew that this series did not have any episodes anymore... iI'm completely stuck with Nana's story, very deep, even still related to current conditions, about love, friendship or past relationships.... why did it have to be on hiatus all this time oh my gosh where have I just found out there is an anime this cool???

I love Nana so much its like a classic Avoidant x Anxious attachment style working when both people can appreciate each others differences and not try to change each other just being there.

This series is sooo good because I relate more to Nana. Being all fierce outside to hide how fragile you actually are just painful, but what can we do about it? Being ambitious yet crumbles inside, being surrounded by a lot of people, kind people, but not being able to articulate what you feel… just yeah.

I'm going through a very hard patch in life where I've been cheated on horribly, like really horribly that it even trended on social media when I posted about it. And I thought of NANA as an adult, it describing how that goes, and how lief goes, and how people act and develop. When you watch anime and think stuff like that, you feel funny about yourself, you know, getting affected by something seen as a kids' show, but what's true is true. NANA showcased people, dreams, relationships, and consequences so well and honest, and made a pretty deep impact.

the anime was good and had all the up and downs. the manga took are hearts and crushed it. I don't know if the author died or got to sick to continue but it was never finished on the worst cliff hanger ever. still highly recomend the manga or anime. also most by this author are classics.

In my relationship I feel like I'm hachi, maybe that's why I love it so much, because I relate to her

I'm right in the middle of Nana. I'm almost thirty-four and did most of my anime watches right out of high school. Some during middle/high school, with friends. I can see the cast's complicated motives as rather true to life (in what's driving them internally, not what they're aiming at/dreams externally), and appropriately dramatic for them being so young (but not in middle/high school, which is feeling more old-hat by the day). Anime that drive the age further forward start to clash with some of the limits of the format-older characters living more realistic lives can be hard to do in such a visually emotive style without it feeling like a slice of life w/ spikes of deep catharsis instead of woven mini-arcs nested inside a main throughline like Nana does so well. I simply can't see myself as easily in middle or high school characters, not in the ways that're artistically cathartic for middlescence (after youngest adulthood, before senility), bc this is such a protracted "arc" of my life Nana can be enjoyed & found thought-provoking by both young adults & "middlescents", probably even by middle schoolers though they'd likely have trouble accepting the downfalls of the characters as just regular part of life even if dramatized. I don't consider myself otaku anymore-i was never sufficiently into fiction instead of non-fiction-but this one's really touching my heart and resetting my perspective in ways that normally only non-fiction/social studies can accomplish Girls' Last Tour is doing the same thing bc the characters' ages cease to matter in the absurd scenario. Bartender is another one full of older characters. Older than Nana's characters even. You get little slices of lives, dreams, fears, hopes, of each bar patron Ideally, being into anime as a youth should steel your resolve for finding your way in life, but without seinen & josei (older characters or written for older ppl) to give perspective on setbacks or even outright death of dreams ("dreams deferred" as well), you get main character syndrome a lot of the time, which seems like the opposite of the summed effects that Japanese authors are trying to impart. It does hit differently when you're in an extremely individualistic country-the drive and individuality explored even in shojo & shonen is implicitly shown to Japanese audiences as a corrective for status quo social issues, that don't apply (in terms of healthy individuality with the reality that you're always on someone else's supply/support/beckoning) as readily to U.S. audiences where I'm from bc wish-fulfillment mixed with already excessive individualism can lead ppl to miss the point. Nana is a great bridge to check into how younger anime has affected you in terms of perspective, for the reasons i just mentioned. I think Nana's actually more josei, but can still reach shojo audiences with discretion.

Nana is a realistic Slice of Life

I am commenting again in this video. Last year, I watched this and I was mad at hachi for sticking up with that jerk. But day before yesterday I had almost similar situation. I went out with a friend of mine and things went bad and we ended it yesterday and he said as if all was my mistake. We ended and he thinks I am like those selfish girls. I am mad at him but at the same time it is so painful that the kind of connection we had, it has ended with this too. I miss that a lot and it sucks to say but yesterday when we met for last time to give back each other's stuff, none of us said anything and he was looking really handsome. Pathetic but now I know why hachi did was she did. I relate to her the most.

For those who liked the show but not limit themselves strictly to anime, I would really recommend watching Bojack Horseman. It starts out kind of annoying and silly but trust me, this show cuts deep.

maybe we should start calling animes for women (not girls) josei, not shojo. maybe that would help some of the more shonen-focussed anime watchers to branch out a little and watch shows that focus on love, trauma and making your way into the world as a young adult (stories, which can never hurt to engage with), like the very brilliant Nana.

I read the manga when I was like, probably 8 LOL. But it got me hooked. then the anime aired. Damn both the manga and anime was so heartwrenching. And for some reason I could really relate to Nana O, I also have problems with my relationships since I have abandonment issues because of my parents. Not to mention my dream to become a musician (shattered because of my parents).

I was really hoping you would discuss the manga, since the anime ends at the half way point of the published story.

i used to relate to this anime called Kuzu no Honkai when i was in my teens but as i grow older, i find myself relating more to Nana.

I'm 18 episodes in, and I'm starting to get a little worried about just how dark this series might get, having just watched Your Lie in April and Plastic Memories back to back.

I think what sucks is that there won't ever be another anime like Nana simply because authors simply don't understand how raw and real life is for ordinary people. There are some shows that come close but no anime has ever felt so natural like Nana did.

I was fortunate enough to be given nearly all the volumes of nana read thru it all and left hanging Oh lordy if you want a train ride of bullshit give the manga a read
