A local astrophotographer reached out to me to have me come by his place and see his observatory. I have seen a lot of roll off roofs before in person and on KZfaq, but I have never seen a roll off roof with wheeled struts. This maybe a well know design, but I haven't seen it anywhere, so for me it was a novel idea. And it really works well, I was amazed and pleasantly surprised. A shout out to Rays Astrophotography for the visit and the pics of his unique observatory.

Very clever idea for where space is tight and you don't want permanent posts. Thanks for sharing this Dave.

My one concern over the tracks not extending out all the way would have to do with ground settling. He built his on an existing pad/pavers where any settling had presumably already happened. And maybe Arizona is different than here in the Northeast with freezes and thaws. But if if the ground settles oddly, then it might become easy for the wheels to become askew from the tracks.

This design isn't for all. I grew up in Maine, so very familar with frost heaves, and this design would not work, or if you did use it, you would be a lot of rework of the area where the wheels go. So it depends on your situation. I know that here in Phoenix, it doesn't get below freezing, and desert soil is pretty stable, so ground settling is not an issue for us.

You got me! I meant to say visual astronomy, i.e., using eyepieces rather than a camera. My bad LOL!

@@DaveUrbanAstro No worries, excellent idea for a roll-off roof though. Thanks for posting the video! :-)
