A little while ago, I was talking about the old Bretonnian Bombard on my podcast, and an extremely kind listener reached out to offer me his own Bombard, still in the original packaging(that I'd never even seen before!) I knew I had to do something special with it. This model is older than me and it is probably one of the oldest models I've worked with. I laser cut a display base for it and had a lot of fun constructing a little scene while keeping it playable in tournaments as well. Hope you enjoy this video, I loved making it and I'm so grateful for being able to take custody of such a special model. I cannot wait to roll some dice with it soon!
If you're interested in the painting process, this videos should help as it's all the same colours for the Men at Arms! Please let me know if you have any questions though!

I remember painting one of these when they first came out. God I now feel old. Can't remember what happened to it. Perhaps I too need to get this model again. Love your painting Andy, but also you whole attitude to painting and to the hobby in general. I find it inspiring.

That's a really nice little diorama for some really nice old models. I actually really like the shirtless dude, there is something charming about him. But if you want to make the diorama even more "realistic", or whatever you want to call it since I forgot the word I wanted to use, there are a few things you could do that wouldn't take much time to add. 1. Adding a little built up dirt wall all the way between two bigger dirt mounds, maybe waist high or just below the barrel of the artillery piece. This was something that armies often did to provide even more cover for the artillery crew from enemy artillery, cavalry charges, as well as infantry charges, this was often done even when battling in the field and not just something reserved for sieges. In sieges these dug in positions also had such defenses to the left and right of them and smaller ones at the back. Armies back in the day had a LOT of support crew to build these things, like the laborer boys. For extra bonus points, add some planks or logs made from ice cream sticks to brace up the dirt mounds :) 2.Sprinkle in a flower or two for variation in the base since the artillery is further back than the rest of the army. Personally I enjoy even adding a flower here and there in my army just to show variation in the same type of baseing scheme :) 3. Don't be afraid to add even more grass or some 3d printed supply crates for your artillery dioramas. To me at least, more grass and supplies means further back, supplies would be stored at a somewhat safe place and the ground wont be as trampled as it will be in the front where all the action is :) But that's just me and how I like to make things and the narrative that come naturally to me :)

Fantastic video as always, you've rapidly become one of the channels I actively look out for new videos from 🙂 Beautiful scene set out with that base, I imagine that with the unified paint scheme and basing the 35y/o bombard sits next to the 20y/o knights and modern royal Pegasus and everything looks right together 🙂

That's awesome! I'm also loving the concept of Old World. I myself have a tub of old minis from the 80s - 99s I need to dig out! I used to go into a local hobby shop and buy blister packs when ever I could. Lot of them are unpainted. I think I'll take a bunch of nice photos of the ones I did paint then strip them to give them a proper paint job now that I'm more skilled! Looking forward to doing that and you give me a lot of inspiration!

While working on my Bretonnian starter box, I remembered I actually started Bretonnians right before the old world was destroyed and the age of Sigmar started. I started to dig into my shamefully considerable pile of opportunity, and I found my two damsels from 5th edition. one on foot, one mounted. So looking forward to include them in my army with a modern paint job! This is why I jumped to Old World band wagon: the characterful minis and nostalgia trip to my younger, more innocent years :D

Next time you do a scene like this try to put do the static grass stage while the models are on scenic base, and overlap the spots into model bases. It will improve the overall impression a lot when the grass spots don’t sit isolated between sections of the individual models. Brings it all together nicely. Awesome video! Looking forward to more skaven you mentioned! 🐀

I do love the old models. The oldest Warhammer models in my collection are an early 1980-something metal Skaven Command set with musician, banner and champion, that I bought new in box in the very early 90s, and only got around to painting 3 or 4 years ago.

I did scenic trays for my Trebuchet's and an old metal Dwarf Flame Cannon I built and painted for someone. I really love setting a scene for a warmachine + crew, kinda sad that the SKaven one kinda over fills it's base, but at least you can put crew on the platforms within the frame work. Great job can't wait to see more.

It worked very well. Nice neutral basing that would fit on any terrain type. Was surprised you didn't drill the barrel out 😂😂. IIRC Bretonnians originally were allowed, and had a great bombard (larger and not on wheels) and at least one pattern of Organ Gun. I think I have some of the first gunners (pre these) but they may have been from Perry's 100years war range before they set up for themselves.

I find the debate over new vs old models interesting, these have painted up great (they are Merry sculpted after alll). I sometimes feel that miniatures have got not complex, and more consistent in quality, but not necessarily 'better ' overall. So you're not mad at all for wantung to get them painted. Oh great paint job and vid of this ancient GW model! BTW Which channel did you say someone is doing old hammer mini's with modern paint jobs? Can you share please? Always like to have a nose for other inspirations like yours here in this run of OWH.

Have you ever tried drybrushing the tufts and static grass? I find that it give 'depth' to the veg'. I usually use a light buff or beige colour.

Looking good! That reminds me that I need to actually base my Eagle Claw Bolt Throwers nowadays and I kinda want to base my Casket of Souls so I won't have to manhandle the mini itself. Any suggestion on the base size for the casket since it says it doesn't need one in Rav. Hordes.

Do you use Micro set and Micro sol for your water transfers? I you haven't, let me tell you, it makes puttering transfers on curved surfaces a breeze and I couldn't recommend that stuff more. Even for flat surfaces I use the stuff in case I accidentally left texture with the paint. It really does end with a painted on effect! Glad you got this model. I really enjoy watching your content that trudges through some of the old models of yesteryear. Sure, some of them have faces that look like you made the most outrageous insult against their lineage, but there is something to it. We just don't talk about the old Sister's of Battle Dialogus... haunts my dreams... EDIT: Love how it came out though I wish the guy lighting was a little closer to the bombard... though to be fair he might be nervous from experience. There could be a reason he has a shield with his wick! EDIT: Oh, and I highly recommend buying actual cork bark, it is just as good as the cork board but gives more much more moldable and natural shapes to the rocks! I did it for the old Tomb King BSB to give him is tactical rocks and to make sure he is above the regular unit banner.

I do indeed, total game changer when I discovered them for transfers! I love when people comment during the videos, I love reading the extra bits! Haha yeah the shield definitely seem to have come with experience! I will have to try getting some actual cork bark for sure some time, thanks for the great tip, really appreciate!

Unfortunately Graham McNeill didn't get the memo about Bretonnian Lords not using ranged weapons in that ABYSMAL Lords of The Lance novel. He said all the Pegasus Knights use Crossbows. Just one of many lore breaking sins in that book.

The had bows. Recurve bows like mongoles. And I think it makes loads of sence for them to carry it. The book wasn’t target but I really enjoyed it. Especially the grail knight.

Great work but the placement of the men on the big base is to symmetrical, should have place them more random on the big base, makes it look more natrual.

I love the paint job, but man I thought you were going to go with the classic siege pit, with like a dug pit and stakes. Definitely know what you mean by new techniques on old models, my BSB has an NMM job on the grail and banner and I’m blown away by how amazing it looks
