In his autobiography 'Scar Tissue' Tony said he wrote this as a poem after feeling alienated and distant from his band because he was clean (at the time) and they were using and drinking. He felt that the only person that was still there for him was his city and he felt that she was alive. He said that the only other time he felt like that was when he would go under a bridge downtown and go on a drug bender. He wrote the course based on that time. When he would go on these benders he would disappear for days; shooting up, giving himself away to the drugs, and leaving the woman he loved behind. This song was a guiding force when I was going through rehab, trying to stay clean, and even after I relapsed and got clean again. Anthony's addition and history are much more intense compared to mine, but as an addict, this song cuts deeps.

I know many of us that grew up in the 70's and 80's hate on much of the music that is currently popular, but Red Hot Chili Peppers were a Godsend to many of us and just one of a handful of artist that I cold count on to provide that music "fix" that we longed for. RHCP became my go to music in the 90's and into this century. I consider "Californication" one of the great albums of all time, it's splendid and I still love listening to it. As far as "Under the Bridge" it was the first song that introduced me to RHCP and the more I heard it the more I liked it and then it lead to following RHCP as a fan. For me it was a turning point and allowed me to follow other music being produced in the 90s. Thanks JAJ, this was long overdue.

Utmost respect for you. I was born very lucky.. my parents didn't do drugs and they provided me with more than a lot of people I know, but I did take that path, for awhile because even though they provided a great life, something was missing.. leading me to think that money is not the answer to problems.. when the drugs wear off, the feelings return and you've done nothing but wasted your time. I had not known the title either. I had thought it was City of Angels. Jamel, thanks for explaining the title for me at least. Since i have never been in that type of situation or city life. Though I can understand the feeling of being downtrodden by society and feeling that your location may be all that you have. Thanks for being a family.

I lived in DTLA for 16 years, near the bridge, in an artist's loft, as a pro photographer. Anthony recommended me to shoot them for a magazine cover in '95. We had a great shoot and AK was super nice. Means the world to me.
