Mortars always fire at the deepest part within range. Placement is key here. Getting anti-creeper from mines would help mop up the small amounts that Mortars ignore.

I do like these more special maps, where they kind of teach you to not just overly rely on cannons, but still give you a way to get some. Also just to remind us about the rest of the arsenal of creeper world.
