I just looked up that vent and you seem to be missing a brass part if it is indeed a "pressure vacuum vent", there should be a poppet valve in it that takes a certain amount of internal pressure or vacuum to move it, and it stays air tight when the tank is equalized, since your fill flap isn't air tight, I don't see how that could ever work as designed on this tank. If you can still get them there, I think you should send that back and just get a regular mushroom style with a whistle in it like a residential fuel tank has.

@@criticalevent if I’m understanding what you’re saying that brass poppet valve that you’re talking about is an external part? There is a chance that when he had ordered the tank with a manual crank, they may have decided against sending him a poppet valve to create a vacuum. You were saying that poppet valve may require a certain amount of vacuum pressure before, it’s activated and a hand pump might not be enough. He had mentioned in the video that when he had ordered it, they kinda got confused as to why he was ordering a manual pump rather than a 12 V pump. Then again I could be way off base.🤷‍♂️🙂👍

Mike, I've put in a number of these service tanks. Here's a couple of tips: Get rid of that type of vent pipe...Look at the fill cap and there shouldn't be any sealing there..that will vent your tank just fine because you're only using a hand pump even if you were using an electric pump it would work just fine. Another tip is where the hose attaches to the filter, put a 45 or 90 degree elbow there. This will save your hose from ultimately cracking and eventually leaking. Good luck from an old fuel delivery man!

I wish I knew you were looking to do this with the tank. I am the commercial rep for Bfs/Bruceton Petroleum and I set double wall tanks and pumps at no charge, as long as you can use close to the volume of the tank 1x a month. I think you are in our coverage area. SW PA. Anyway, you want a mushroom vent cap. RE Michels or a plumbing store should be able to help you. The vent you have will work but like you said, you will get dust and water through it. Then you will have other issues. love the videos!

My grandparents, in rural Lycoming County, had a farm fuel tank. They would keep an empty coffee can upside down over the same type of vent that you have. They just painted it to match the tank color. Might be “Appalachian Engineering”, but it worked just fine.

I think what I would do with that vent is put on a 90° and a 3" piece, another 90° and a 2" piece, and the vent upside down. The screen will then block any blowing snow/rain and mainly insects! I agree with you that with the vent installed upright, it will get small amounts of blowing rain/snow and mainly debris. Your tank will still pick up some atmospheric moisture, but that will be down as the bottom of the tank. I think it is also important to fill up your equipment before a fuel delivery. Because when they dump fuel in, it stirs up any water in the bottom of the tank, so give it time to settle out. Keep up the good shows, and that was GREAT news about your friend!

Mike, I think you need about 6” of wood chips for the floor of your chicken house and run. It will absorb the chicken manure, keep down the odor and give the chickens a place to scratch. The chicken manure will facilitate the composting process of the wood chips and once a year clean it out with your tractor bucket and add to your compost pile. There’s no better fertilizer than natural compost. Replace it with new wood chips. Another way to be more self sufficient.

@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans....NFPA 30 regulates that vapors from pressure vacuum vents must be vented both UP and OUTWARD. That's the reason for the design. The screen is fine enough to prevent ingress of debris and insects, but also fine enough to prevent rain intrusion. Water is designed to go through the drain holes (hopefully they don't get blocked with ice). It is over engineered in my opinion.

Hi Mike, On your fuel tank install, I'd do two things differently. Put your fill guage where your vent is and the vent at the fill end. Also, your vent needs to be mounted upside down, so you'll need two 90 degree elbows and a nipple or two to to do that. If you leave the vent the way it is, you'll get moisture in your fuel.

I raised chickens for 3 years. I had a door that the chickens exit into the 75’x75’ run. I said if I ever built another run I would build it to fit a shade cloth. So about 5 years ago my wife said she wanted to raise chickens. I built a really nice coup and bought a shade cloth to go on top of chain link fence. We put about a foot of sand in the floor because we have access to sand and she researched keeping them clean and several sites were using sand. It has done well as far as keeping it clean and the shade cloth keeps them safe from predators.

Hey Mike, Glad to hear about Pete, thanks for the update. The vent you have there is an industry standard type. You will find them on the majority of underground and above ground tanks at gas stations, airports, etc. One of the earlier comments explained the function of the screen being fine enough to block rain and debris and rain will drain out through the channels out the side of the top. Also, if you put an upside-down vent on you will be inviting wasps to take up residence. This next point may not be required by law in your area but would be a good safety idea. You have off-road diesel stored in that tank and you really should mark it as such. Get a Haz-Mat placard for each side of the tank that shows 1993 on a red and white diamond design (this is for diesel in the U.S., 1202 is Canada). Also, you should put a label 3"tall of OFF-ROAD DIESEL ONLY (this keeps the Fed. Fuel Tax Man happy) on the front and rear of the tank (where the tank fill is to make sure the delivery person gives you the correct product and whoever is pumping fuel out is putting it in the proper machine). The placard and product I.D. tags are pretty much for fire safety so the F.D. knows how to handle the tank in case of an emergency. One more question, did you pull the adjustable pickup tube to full extension? Didn't notice in the video if you caught that. All of these comments come from having spent 30 plus years in the petroleum transport industry. (I did take a few notes over the years) Have a good day!

Love having a aux tank for my equipment. We fortunately have it on a service truck so we only buy 50 gallons at a time, but we use a battery-operated pump with a hidden kill switch. On our vent, we just built our own with a curved pipe so the rain won't get in it. When they first started dying the fuel they used to check my trucks at the scale house. They ran what looked like a long straw down in your tank and they could tell immediately if you had a drop of dyed fuel in it. The fine was confiscation of the vehicle and depending on how large your fleet was even more money.

Hello Mike. No matter the size of your chicken coop, I would recommend a concrete floor in your coop with built in slopes for drainage. A strip of dirt could be framed in the middle of the concrete, under the roof, to allow for scratching and dusting. the concrete will also prevent critters from digging under the fence. Concrete will eliminate mud and ease in cleaning with a bucket or hose. You would still be able to put straw, hay or grass clippings in for them to forage. Keep up the great videos.

I put a GPI 12 VDC pump on mine with an SAE connector. Each of my diesel units has a fused cable hooked to their battery, also with an SAE connector. Whichever unit is being fueled powers the pump. Eazy Peazy. I agree with the tin can to keep out rain, for the time being. You're authorized to do that because you own property in WV ;-] Leaving the sediment on the bottom, with a short pickup, isn't the end of the world. It will keep from churning up sediment. If the EOTW comes, you'll find a way to suck out the rest. Finally, with that qty of fuel in storage, you might want to consider a fuel stabilizer of your choice. Congrats on the tank ! For the same reason, I also own my Propane tanks. I buy when the $ is low (usually when the farmers are buying propane for drying). One delivery charge. One hazmat charge. Plus, bless their hearts, they give me a veterans discount. I always enjoy your videos from here in NEOhio.

As a retired farmer in Arkansas, we had multiple tanks such as this scattered over different farms. I have never seen a vent such as this, a totally overthought design. We used bushings to reduce the two inch openings to one inch, then a six inch nipple, an elbow, another short nipple and another elbow. Never any problems. We replaced the manual pumps with 12v many years ago, but we used a LOT of fuel with large tractors.

Good morning Mike. I understand that type of vent is made for much larger tanks with big pumps that pump 30+ gal/min. Those pumps can cause a vacuum quickly, so you may damage the pump, and or it can collapse the tank. With the filler that you put on, there is enough venting, and with the manual pump you have, you will not have quick enough draw that venting should ever be an issue for you. I wouuld suggest you remove that vent and leave the bung cap in it. I work for a petroleum company and do farm bulk deliveries in Canada.

You could drape wire over the frame to keep the chickens in/hawks, possums anf foxes out. Over the wire you could drape a tarp to any size you feel comfortable for the chickens. Just a thought. Practical Advice: 1. Get a guard for your fill gauge - fill gauges get broken all the time. Delivery truck drivers brush them off in winter and hoses get smashed up against them. 2. Get a tube of water detector paste so you can monitor the development of water in the tank bottom and suck it out with a cheap hand operated transfer pump seasonally. 3. Keep the tank filled as much as possible in the summer so condensation does not develop in the thank. Condensation turns in to water at the bottom of the tank. Tanks rust and or develop bacteria from condensed water. The fine screen is typically in place so that if you have a whistle bugs do not get in and screw up the function of the whistle (stop it from whistling). I had that happen to me on a tank. I am surprised that your tank does not have a whistle incorporated into the vent pipe assembly. Whistles are a nice precaution against a day dreaming delivery truck driver or a broken fill gauge. The tone of the whistle changes dramatically as the fluid reaches the top of the tank. Without a whistle a distracted delivery truck driver can easily overfill the overflow bucket. The overflow bucket is really in place to catch small spills when the hose is removed etc. Without the overflow bucket small spills (over the life of the tank) can necessitate an environment clean up. Most vent pipes that I see have 2 - 90 degree elbows on the top of the vent pipe so that the open end of the vent pipe is pointing down. I can see your screen being inverted if 2 - 90 degree elbows are attached. If it were my tank it would situated be on a small concrete pad with some bollards at the corners to protect it from vehicle collision. Environmental clean up costs can be outrageous. Tanks come with gov't regulations today - make sure you meet them all incase of a major spill. Great project and video.

Mike, The suction pipe on your pump, just unscrew it, add a coupling and buy a section of pipe threaded on one end. I was a Sawyer in a commercial sawmill for around 12 years. At the end of the shift the carriage, track, and vertical edger were blown off. Then I had an oil can, which had a spout maybe a foot long. Always thinned motor oil a little with fuel oil and lubercated every moving part at the end of the day. Also done that same after morning break, and lunch. Prevented wear, and lubercated all the moving parts. I would switch the locations of the vent & the fill gauge if the hood on the tank fill port hits the gauge. Not sure if you put Teflon tape or pipe seal on the threads of that large hood. If not water will probably get into your tank. Also, is their a small drain in the bottom of the tank , with a valve to occasionally check for any water? Getting the tank under cover is a great idea, just helps with less condensation.

Still years later I am a little beat up but did way more than they thought I would be able to do. I hope Pete is the same and gets back to doing what he loves and back working with the saws. Mike think I would be filling up your pickups with that off road diesel as without a tank in the back of your pickup you would probably never be checked unless you go through truck scales hauling a trailer with your tractor on it. If you don't need to stop then you would probably never be stopped. There is a station by me that I know guys fill their pickups up with red diesel and the station lets them do it.

Hi Mike over here in the UK I always use Heldite joint compound, the vent is ok it's designed to stay closed until you pull fuel out of the tank or open if the tank build up pressure there called a PV valve. You may have to replace the PV valve every few years they do stick over time.

Thanks, but not a firefighter. It’s more the product of experience and training. A large construction company once allowed operators to park machines closely in lines for ease of service and fueling. It was a good idea until it wasn’t anymore the night one caught fire and burned many before being extinguished.

I used to work in the power sector and it was common to store diesel on site for either generation or for the large on site vehicles. Dependant upon the fuel route, water could be in supplied in the diesel. This wasn't a big problem as it would settle to the base of the tank in about 10 to 20 days. For this reason, periodically, it was important to drain any water diesel off from the base of the tank as it could corrode the tank or if left for a long time to build up to get into the fuel supplied. I understand the water can enter the fuel when it is shipped so can be salt water at origin, so it is very good practice to let newly delivered fuel to settle.

Vent cap, I did a little googling, you got it right and it says the screen "helps" prevent water. I would simply not use that one. After watching your video about this, I was like why have I not thought about this for my property. Since last week I made an area, covered in crushed concrete, Had two tanks brought in, 500 gal diesel and 300 gas both with 12v pumps. Oh and I have a 57-5, had it a year or so and absolutely love it

Hey Mike. We just live north of you, near Titusville. We have 30 chickens. We are on our 5th flock, due to predators. This flock is doing well with having a rooster to protect them. We do the DEEP LITTER METHOD for chickens. Our opinion is, it is the best for the chicken coop floor, because it is like, in reality, to a forest floor. As for elevating it, you would have a thickness to it so that will not be muddy. We do not use stone for chickens. That is not a good idea. If you put down wood chips and saw dust, which you have ready access to, like us, the chickens will scratch at it and make it into compost for the garden. We do not have any mud with this method. We clean in out twice a year in the spring and fall. Hope this helps.

Yay mike finally got s diesel tank !!!!! I just used the mega lock and totally disassembled my old log splitter and did every hydraulic fitting with it and put it all back together and it took care of every single drip i had !!! Good stuff !!! I had that same hand crank pump and chucked it after the first fill up !!! I went with a 110v for my indoor tank and 12v 20gpm for my skid tank . The hand crank pump makes a mess because there is no way to get the fuel to stop coming out of the end when full , like a positive shut off on a electric pump !!! The hand pump does work good for drums of oil 🛢

52 years ago I started my construction career as the "pumper" on a fuel truck that consisted of a 3 ton flatbed with a 1,000 gallon diesel and 500 gallon gasoline tank chained to the bed. I rode inside the cab until we got to the construction project, then I "rode the chains" while we moved from one piece of equipment to another. The pumps were similar to yours but they were the back-and-forth farm style with 13 pumps to the gallon. The driver would stretch the hoses out to their 50' length if needed, but I pumped until the backhoe, dozer, excavator, cherry picker, crane or other machine was full, then wiped the mud from the hose as I put it back in the truck. I can imagine how your arms will feel when you fill up your equipment. We replaced the manuall pump with an electric one after I moved from the truck to the pipe fab shop after 6 months on the truck. I couldn't wear regular shirts with thin sleeves because my arms and chest had really grown during that time.

Have you considered the commercial chicken house model? It's basically an open pole barn with the long sides having chicken wire. One end has a set of doors that makes is accessible by tractor and the other end could be enclosed for egg production. Wood planking would be run along the bottom on the sides for attaching the wire and holding holding in pine wood shavings. If you put in a rock base under the shavings, this would deter the chickens from getting to dirt since they like to scratch and fluff in the shavings. This would also help in keeping it dry. (Note: The rock should be large enough to keep the chickens from scratching through.) When it comes time for cleaning, the litter is prized by farmers for ease of spreading over pastures, very fertile.

It might be interesting to put a manual meter on the outlet to keep track of how much fuel you have pumped. You could use that for filter replacement intervals as well.

I spent years as the Senior Testing Technician for a company that did inspections on fuel stations. Pressure testing the tanks, lines and leak detectors. Mainly on underground tanks but some above ground tanks also. The vent you installed is pretty much a standard vent for a system that does not have to qualify at a vapor recovery system. The ones we used were made of plastic, but I am sure the metal one you used will last longer. They were installed upright just like yours.

I’d make a J-Hook at the top of that pipe then put the vent on. In the meantime make sure to go cover it until you get it fixed or you will get water in your tank. Also, I’d add a water separator to the tank filter system.

Hi Mike, the updraft vent you have is for gasoline tanks. Designed to make the vapors go up and away from the tank. This is according to the National Fire Protection association. I do not believe that type is necessary for diesel, and I would change it.

Hi Mike, just an FYI for your new fuel tank. I would rig up a drip cup for the nozzle when stored on the pump. It will drip on your new tank and stain it and collect dust. Diesel is worst then ATF for going everywhere. I enjoy adventure, Steve.

Cover the run. Put woodchips in. Soaks up the mud. Wire mesh/galvanised hardware cloth everywhere including two feet into the ground. 18”/2ft wood/perspex around the sides at base to limit chips/dirt being scratched out. Make it in large mesh panels if it’s easier for you to remove to use excavator to dig out for compost. For a useful pretty coop see Laura’s at Garden Answer. She uses shavings for the walk in coop. The run is covered.

I would use the old style mushroom style vent cap. Around the farm we rarely installed a vent because the fill cap usually had little nubs on the bottom of the cap that left an air gap for venting. See them all the time with no vent and never have any issues.

Hi Mike, I was thinking that there should be a 180 degrees pipe attached to the top of the Vent Pipe, then put the Vent/Filter Screen cap at the end of the 180 degrees bend pipe so that the Screen/ Vent Cap is hanging upside down. Therefore any dirt debris on the screen has a chance to fall off and rain, snow, moisture doesn’t run down the pipe into the inside of the tank. I don’t have a tank but this would make sense to me. Nice setup and addition tho the collective of Wood Mill equipment, the black scotch bright pad is more aggressive than the green, usually used on BBQ grills. If you ever need a more aggressive scrub pad look for the Black Scotch Bright. 😀👍👍👍

I installed hydraulic tank breathers on all gearboxes, hydraulic tanks and oil reservoirs. I used tank breathers from Grainger. You can get open or filtered with desiccant that absorbed moisture. There are different sizes to used and used common pipe threads or an adapter to mount. The desiccant filters change color when the desiccant is saturated and needs to be changed. Oil analysis shows no moisture in the oil. Have a great day!
