@CalvinHikes Жыл бұрын
In this cave? People kept getting stuck after that first big drop. Because that's the spot you can get into just with ropes but you can't get out without specialized gear. That was also years ago before specialized gear was easily available. Good gear, available to common folk, is much more accessible and so they leave the cave open. Even though very few people know where it's at, they have not attempted to close it again.

Glad you guys made it out safely. I have to say, if a cave is blocked off multiple times on purpose and people still keep going in and need to be rescued, they just need to put up a sign that says, "Warning: Many climbers have become trapped in this cave. We blocked it off for good reason but people still want to go in. Enter at your own risk. By entering you choose the path of natural selection. You survive or fail on your own effort. No one will come rescue you. This is your last chance to turn back."

looks like you still need to make the crawl to the small room with the broken petzl bobbin d quick link and tow strap someone was trying to move a rock with so they could continue the squeeze (definitely looks to continue but is still partially blocked), there is also a permanent pull line loop through a ring anchor that you can use to access the tube that you can see through the holes way up in the ceiling in the purple tube (essentially another tube stacked right on top of the purple tube). crazy drips and some sketchy rope traverses. interesting view of the purple tube below. most of those squeezes were cleared by hand piece by piece, multiple trips. (about the sketchiest sounding thing ever. lol)

You may say you’re fat and claustrophobic, but I say there’s a reason you have these survival skills. Evolution makes it so not everyone is alike, this means that not everyone will be wiped out in a disaster because they are all doing the same thing or behaving the same (or have the same traits, even; sometimes you might notice that in a family, the kids don’t even look like they have the same parents; this is evolution laying down protection).

I've had friends who were agorophobic (fear of open spaces) and claustrophobic (fear of enclosed spaces). I can go to sleep in an MRI tube or a mountaintop. But space below my feet that is leading deeper into a cave (regardless of lines and redundant anchors) ... Everybody has their limits! Me? I'm afraid of the IRS, overbearing cops, water, cave diving, bullies with "Authoritaugh" and people who don't know how to handle a gun ... people who don't control where they point it 100% of the time. Neat, neat cave! And I'm glad YOU went there and brought the great images back!

Thank you. Yeah this would seem easier as we aren't crawling in constrictions. But given that it's vertical it's much more dangerous. It's just not a danger that is as easily conveyed on video. The danger gets lost in translation. We can casually visit constriction caves but we cannot casually navigate this cave. Another danger that isn't easily translated through video is the temperature. This cave is quite cold and that has to be fought the entire time you are inside.

Love the "I'm a limestone cowboy" comment, and the lasso maneuver; well done! The only "caving" I've ever done was the sign-guided tour of the polar caves, a glacial deposit, in New Hampshire. It was a family outing, but my Dad, at 6 feet 4 inches, could not complete the tour, as the turn-arounds were too tight. My tiny self utterly enjoyed the experience! Interesting point: there was ice in the bottom sections, in August. My goodness- that lava cave is amazing! One question- has anyone gone down into the bottomless pit? Curious what's down there. Interesting that you showed the 2011 Kamoamoa eruption at Napau crater on Kilauea volcano. I was the first person there after the eruption started. I was lucky enough to see 3 new fissures open up no more than 20' from me. I have seen subterranean lava tubes within larger tubes. One opening dropped about 125'. I didn't have the proper gear and was alone when I discovered it so I decided not to try and explore it. When I returned a week later a huge new flow buried it all. The main tube skylight was 50' in diameter and maybe 30' deep. The vertical shaft that led to the sub tube was maybe 3' in diameter. The rope I used to measure its depth had a thermometer attached to it. It read 120 degrees at the time. Colorful flows like that are common in Hawaii lava tubes.

Ok guys. I've done some caves in the Springfield Missouri area and some underwater bouldering and shoots in Upper Bidwell Park Chico CA. One time in Chico I was coming through a pinch hole underwater and got stuck at the hips , literally 5 inches from the surface of the water. I could see a young man watching me only feet away and that allowed me to relax enough to "wiggle" through. You , my friend, have given sweaty palms and anxieties on a couple occasions where I had to walk for a sec. Knowing full well you made it. But sh;t man some of these squeeze spots are crazy ¡!¡!¡!

We bang our heads a lot. Usually my belly, arms and head get pretty scratched up. But bumping heads while crawling isn't too bad. @@CalvinHikes --- "What happens if you fart?" is hilarious. Reverb, I imagine. Btw, searching the geology of caves, how they're formed, "water" seems to be the most cited cause, but your cave there looks like lava tubes, especially the vertical ones, and possibly emptied magma chambers. I just can't imagine water erosion drilling holes in rock like that, it makes no sense. Water forms lakes, rivers, canyons, and undercut islands, not drill holes. Edit: watching the rest, I see you concur. Lava tubes.
