Today on Rebuild Rescue we are reviewing a huge discovery regarding the 401 A that will completely change this project! After discussing what this new information will mean, we go through several items on the list of requirements to be able to get this plane airborne again, such as checking the flaps, folding the gear, and removing the broken tail to be replaced later on.

You got both engines to start! So it's YOUR airplane! So if you want red carbon fiber, put red carbon fiber in it! Are you instrument rated? Even if you're not, spend the buckazoids to put an IFR panel in it! You won't regret it! Oh, and glad to see you out of the wheelchair and back on your feet! w00t! :-)

@@EliteGeeks Panels, themselves, are generally flat black to prevent glare and give the instruments the best visibility, though I don't know of any reg. that dictates the color of a panel.

When you are re-installing the wing gap fairings (between the fuselage wing stub and the inboard wing) BE SURE to use the correct countersunk screws. The standard AN 507 screw (used on inspection panels) is not strong enough. The parts manual calls for AN 509 screws. These screws have the same shear strength as a standard AN3 bolt. The gap fairings are a structural member transferring wing loading (from the top and bottom skins) to the fuselage wing stubs. This error cost an A&P friend his job.

@@michaelbooher339 if you re-read the comment, it says that the manual calls for the stronger AN 509 screws, and points out to NOT use the standard inspection panel screws. Implying that the tech used the standard panel screws that are used all over the rest of the wings, instead of the ones the manual called for.

Joe is so freaking cool. I am a medical research instrument technician, he reminds me sooo much of the old dude that trained me up years ago. The mannerisms, even his features, and especially his sense of humor. Would love to learn under Joe!

It would be a nice idea to add a section on the rescue website about the team members, get a bit about them, pics, previous work etc...it would be nice for them to be recognized more. Do it for everyone that helped making this possible with their ideas or elbow grease..

I helped do an annual on a 401 once. Alll the inspection panels (Every. Single. One.) were removed. All the floorboards were removed, the empanage panel was removed and the cables were inspected. The structures of the flaps and control surfaces were inspected for missing rivets. The gear was swung a cople of times because some to the linkages were out of adjustment. The flap transmission needed to be relpaced for some reason. Every single screw was replaced as most of the origional ones were corroded or buggered up in some way. In all it took most of a winter to do, and was the most screwing that I've ever done in my life (mechanical or...otherwise). I can still hear the Dewalt cordless screwdriver in my sleep. Kudos for doing this one right. It's a lot of work. Also, control locks are your friends! The rudder on those things don't take too well to flopping about in the breeze.

The Navy calls an annual a 364 day, and I saw quite a few of those during my 4 year tour in EA-6Bs. There is a cascading inspection schedule, starting at 7 day, and getting progressively more involved from there. 7/14/28/56 etc...

Since we 1st were called on to support this rescue I've been Really impressed with the endurance, generosity, and goodwill of all involved. May the Foundation and all it's beneficiaries be inspired by the fellowship displayed to continue "paying it forward" large or small in the same Spirit, for many decades to come. Belated Happy Birthday to Sam, without whose Generosity none of this would have occurred !

Fantastic job, I love to see others giving back to their communities. I've been on our local airshow committee for 20 years and I've been asked why do you put so much time and effort into it and my answer has always been that my community has been good to me and I feel that I owe them. I'm not rich, but I have skills that allow me to be of help. So keep up the good work and can't wait to see this bird soar again.

It seems that all that has happened during this rescue would also make for a great book. Perhaps with "behind the scenes" information. I have loved watching every episode, and I think I haven't missed any. Thank you for keeping this interesting and non-dramatic in the way so much media is these days.

Jason it made my day to see this progress on the 401! So good that you found that paperwork. I'm so excited to see your plans for a foundation and especially helping underprivileged kids get exposed to flight training. You are an amazing young man giving back to others unselfishly and I hope to be able to meet you someday. Hello, Episode 1 popped up on my 'Suggested videos' feed yesterday and today I completed everything you have posted on this so far. I am a B1 (european version of A&P) from the UK and ex-military, so most of my experience is on Fast Jets and C-130's. This has been a fantastic set of videos and I'm glad you are taking me along for the ride. I look forward to watching this plane come back to life. Keep up the good work and I'm glad you are healing well after your skiing accident.

This series is very instructive as to how an airplane is made and what can go into bringing one back to life. I almost think that they should have moved it into the experimental class for a short period of time. During that period they could have replaced the gasoline engines with Sterling engines and used the bird nest material to power the plane. ;-) .

Just a tip I learned watching Larry's videos over at AMMO NYC. When you use an ice blasting machine the dust gets everywhere. So it would be a good idea to cover the other planes in the hangar 😉

I'd say that bin full is only 3-4kg, no more then 20lbs total imo, that stuff is incredibly light due to being so dry, I pull old nests out of my bamboo every year and they are very very light...

You have a great resource in your (35 year) experienced A&P AI. I’m sure he knows the weak link in twin Cessna landing gear is the intermediate link for the nose gear Extention/retraction rod. The idler arm bolt (located in the vicinity under the pilots feet)is prone to shear resulting in the nose gear not extending. Many a twin Cessna has been scraped because it ends up on its nose destroying both props and engines. The bolt wears from pilots extending the gear at too high an airspeed and eventually shears. There is a Service Bulletin on reinforcing the structure in this area also.

We decided after swinging the gear and seeing that it didn’t retract properly that were going to pull the entire assembly and rebuild it along with both main assemblies…. Last thing we want is to land the 401 on its belly !

@@rebuildrescue That is the right way to do it. Given the total amount of blood, sweat and tears, along with the plane's weight in hundred dollar bills, not doing a full overhaul of critical systems would be just silly.

How exciting to find documentation to allow you to recreate the log books. It sounds like a lot of time has been saved in getting the 401 up and flying again. I think saying "darn birds" would be an understatement. Perhaps a world record for bird nest material and bird poop left in an airplane! Great job...can't wait for the next episode!

Although I ended up as a musician, sound producer, and a voice over, I did start life in engineering doing a marine engineering qualification (for 200,000 tonne tankers, and no, I don't see your motorboat as a yacht!!!). So, it was really nice to see your friend using a good, long screwdriver and not something powered. Impact drivers are great, but if you don't know what you are playing with, they can cause damage too. Working by hand is more intuitive, safer, and better engineering! Brilliant stuff, guys, from this old bloke in the UK. I am loving these progs. If you ever want some cockney or London/British (even posh) voice over, just shout. I love helping out good causes.

You had some rough luck through this project, and wreckin' yer Knee, but your persistence, and enthusiasm earned you these maintenance records, increases the value of the plane......and fills in any doubts about exactly where the airplane is, mechanically. Great Find!

Just happen to stumble across the first video of this series last week. All caught up now, I am very much enjoying this. I grew up close to a small town airport. Spent many days hanging out with the folks there. Now, in my 50's planes in general still are a major interest of mine. Would love to be able to assist, but looks like you have plenty of skilled people helping out. Unless you need a guitar built...lol. Which is my hobby/small business. Anyways, I am going to try my hardest to make it to Oshkosh next year to see this plane make the arrival. Keep up the great work, patiently waiting for the following videos.

Use to think shrink wrapping cars, boats, planes, for storage was overrated... Not anymore! Still can't comprehend someone that would let this set and rot outside, at airport, without any prep... Even left cockpit vents open! Even a little Duct tape, here and there, would have helped... Someone would have had to be paying for storage, or property owners would have had it hauled away for auction, or salvage. Owner had too much money...

I’ve been following this channel ever since I saw the first video on the FREE ABANDONED AIRPLANE. Binged everything, and immediately watch every new one once I get the notification. I got to admit, I caught myself smiling when you found the annual sign off from 2005. I legit felt happiness! Congratulations! If I’m ever flying in the Chester county area I hope to be able to stumble upon you guys and see this thing for real!

Not a criticism but a question from an old jet mechanic: Shouldn’t the flaps, ailerons, rudder, and trim tabs travel be verified with a protractor? I remember the head-on cover picture of a Beech Bonanza with one nose gear door way out of adjustment. When the owner saw it you can bet there was a “redo” ASAP!

Holy cow finding all the records for from the annuals up until the plane was parked is huge! I can't imagine how expensive and time consuming it'd be to get everything inspected and re-certified so you could start a new log book. Now you have all the information to legally recreate the logs using the original data that was entered into it.

Glad I could help. I'm not a pilot so I may have over simplified it a bit but without a logbook everything on the plane has to be reinspected because there's no maintenance record. Having the original records from the annual inspections and other maintenance let's them start a new log book because they have all the information (or at least the most important) the original log book had. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can explain it better but that's the basics of why it was a huge find for them.

Thanks. You are quite right. If the paper trail is not there, then the process was never done. Even if you can see that the process was done. Documentation is king, just like with any military program.

It would surprise me if it is not only possible to replace the spar straps with the wings off but it is the easiest and best way to do it. The only reason that company told you that it must be done with the wings on is to make sure you don't realize how easy it would be to do it in house. They want to make sure they get your business because there aren't too many 401s still in operation so they don't have very many people looking for that service from them.

Only after seeing the close-up of the lowered tailplane do I realize that this is a really big aircraft! Wikipedia tells us: The Cessna 401 and 402 are a series of 6 to 10 seat, light twin-piston engine aircraft.

It's black to prevent glare and blinding u that's a big safety thing above the clouds the sun's always on u. It has to be matte no shine or the sun's going to reflect

I noticed when a person was cleaning the engine pod mounts area and he was using Scotch Bright on the bare Aluminum structure. You should consider applying Zinc Chromate or Equivalent to protect the metal from corrosion. Is there a plan for that before you reinstall the engines?

Just strip the entire plane to bare metal and then have it anodized. One company used to do a great shade of green. But yes, an improved passivation over just bare metal is a good idea.

I doubt that anodising the whole plane would get approval. Anodising removes some metal and weakens the part slightly. Not something you want to do to an aircraft part that wasn't designed for it.

It would have been neat if you had the ability to weigh the plane before and after cleaning to see how many pounds of debris came out of the plane. Love the build can't wait to see take off for the first in 13yrs. 🛩

You could put on sale all the bolts and parts that have to be replaced. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of people out here who would like to have a real original piece of the 401 on their bookshelf, desk or whatnot. You maybe even could sell epoxy cast-in bird crap (not to me though).

I just realized I probably controlled this plane back in the 90's when I worked in the towers of CDW and later in TEB before I transferred down to DCA and then PCT Tracon.

I was in the tower back in 96 I guided down a 707 flown by a passenger because the flight crew were incapacitated by contaminated fish with multiple engines failed, failed landing gear and fuselage blowout.

You should have a battery tender always hooked up when the battery sits for weeks.

We actually keep the battery unhooked as were not certain about the condition of the wiring and the last thing we want is an electrical fire in the hangar.

@@rebuildrescue that won't replace the drain from running electrical motors and no charging system. Hook the battery tender to the battery without the battery connected to the plane. U gotta keep the actual battery always up to state of charge especially after running large loads like the flaps and landing gear.
