It's worth noting that as far as modern heat pumps are concerned, 200% efficiency is actually quite terrible. The more accurate term to use is COP - coefficient of performance, where 1.0 means that the heat moved is equal to the additional energy cost. A higher COP is better. This unit would then have a COP of 2.0. modern heat pumps typically have a COP ranging from 4.0 on the low end and 20.0 on the high end.

Thing is, for a heat pump like this to be 200% efficiet you would need to have the condenser and evaporator completely separate (one exclusively outside, the other exclusively inside) no matter which is which (the evaporator becomes a condenser when in heating mode). This is regardless of venting the air outside, there still needs to be a temperature difference between the two to keep its efficiency
@architypitect
@architypitect Жыл бұрын
More specifically, it's most efficient to have a heat exchanger outside because warming (or cooling) inside air you just cooled (or warmed) and pushing it outside not only wastes some of your effort, but also creates a vacuum inside that draws in outside air that much faster.

@hhjhj393
@hhjhj393 Ай бұрын
@@allendconder I am into van life or off grid living, and the idea of a low power smaller heat pump has always been appealing. The thing I don't like about this is the whole portable thing. I would want like a TINY mini split lol. Like how would you mount this in a van or a tiny house? The vents are awkward. Even if they made a standard window style AC that would be preferable. The biggest problem is simply the watts needed, most vans and tiny homes are small so you don't necessarily need the power that most window ACs provide, you can go smaller. Instead of 400 watts something like 200 or even 150 is probably the sweet spot. Which is doable because they make tiny fridges so making a tiny heat pump which is just a reversible tiny AC should be doable. I guess in BTU instead of 4000 btu you could probably get away with like 2000 btu. Thus allowing people to have cold and heat all with solar!!!!! While also being neat, clean, and unobtrusive. Right now people have like wood stoves, propane heaters, diesel heaters, all which take more work and more installation. Having a separate heating and cooling system is just more added complexity and more annoyance. A tiny mini split heat pump would streamline everything. Instead of having to find diesel or propane or sticks, you just have a solar panel that handles everything. I currently have a window AC that runs off solar but it's HARD, that AC eats my solar like nothing, and it's quite simply too powerful for what I need. I can only run it in short bursts because it's too strong. So it goes from being too hot, to too cold, to too hot, to too cold. What I need is something that is lower power and runs more consistently.

The refrigerant called R290 is simply the flammable fluid Propane jejej, but with a small charge it is a perfect natural refrigerant with almost zero ODP and GWP. Another correction, the 4-way valve only reverse the direction of flow, so the evaporator becomes a condenser and vice versa, but it does not make any type of compression, the only part in the cycle responsible of compression is the compressor. The part responsible of the expansion is the thermostatic expansion valve between the condenser and evaporator.

So the coil that gets hot is going to be the condenser. The side that gets cold is going to be the evaporator. I think you got it. Basic heat pump Air conditioner. Main parts are a compressor, evaporator, condenser, metering device, and reversing valve. Compressor, compresses the hot gas, pushes it through the condenser to condense the gas to a liquid giving off heat, goes through the metering device, flashing liquid into gas and liquid, goes into the evaporator that evaporates it back to a gas giving off cold and goes back to the compressor to get compressed again. Air conditioning 101 in a nut shell. Heat mode reverses the flow of refrigerant, making it give off the heat inside instead of outside.

It is an interesting product, probably more useful for RV living. But, 200% efficiency, which is a CoP of 2 is not impressive in heat-pump technology. Currently home Heat pump CoP is reaching 4, which is 400%. You would also need to connect two hoses, one to bring the air in to pass over condenser/evaporator and the other to take that air out. BTW, R290 refrigerant is pure propane and is a good refrigerant, used extensively in Europe but in N. America an unnecessary hype is created about its safety , perhaps to safeguard the commercial interests of CFC refrigerant manufacturers.

If this is used indoors, the air that is expelled outside has to be replaced from somewhere, which is outside the room and so the aircon has to continually labour to keep the temperature to where you have set it. Doesn’t sound too efficient to me.
@DarkBloodyFoxy
@DarkBloodyFoxy Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. Also, compressor gets hot by itself and it stays in the room lowering the performance of cooling operation. And those are pretty common issues of any portable/mobile AC units. Split ACs are better but stationary (and much less noisy since everything happens outside).

This would be great for a camper van combine with their solar. Glad they went dual pipe. Insulating the exhaust and intake pipe would make it even more efficient. Do they connect into the whole eco system? (Inverter/other batteries). Like the one you installed in your shed?
@duckshepherd

With that duct forcing air out of the space to the outside, that will cause a negative pressure inside the house and make unconditioned outside air infiltrate into the home. This really kills the efficiency of portable AC units like this. The units with two ducts instead of one are the type to get, since they simultaneously intake and exhaust air from outside, leaving the conditioned space pressure neutral.

Very good explanation on this portable unit. I know I’m late to this video since I stubbled upon this video and it’s a very cool concept especially since it’s portable. As many of you have pointed out BTU stands for “British thermal units” and it has a cooling capacity that is equivalent to 100 to over 150 ft.² depending on what you are using it for. heating is around 150 to 250 ft.². Now this is not by any means a replacement to a standard portable or window units that are designed to cool down a small room. I can see this being very handy if you’re going camping, cooling that one hot room that does not get cool enough or if you want that extra comfort. I’m an HVAC tech. so this unit is very interesting to me and one I will definitely try out.

The expansion valve is the black piece at the bottom middle at 4:18 with the wires running to it. It is an electronically actuated expansion valve. Further the reversing valve does not further compression in any way rather changes the path that refrigerant is allowed to flow. Fun fact: basically any gas can be used as a refrigerant! R-290 is actually just refrigerant grade propane!

Usually you can get a two-duct variant, which is the same thing plus an additional plastic cover and duckt for the indoming airflow for the radiator. If you use one-duckt portable unit, it will dump hot air outside. But the dumped air need to be replaced from somewhere, so it comes from outside hot air into the room . If you ha two-duct system it gets air from outside and dumps aid outside direcly. So it is a bit more efficient. But otherwise, it uses much more power than the fixed indalled split system. And it is noisy.

Like someone else already said, this comes with 3 hoses. 1 hose for the air intake, 1 hose for waste heat to be dumped outside, and one hose to pipe the cooled air to a location of your choosing. This way it can be fully hidden from the space that it is conditioning. Pretty neat.

I'm sure if they made it a little bit larger, they could have the thing be 2 seperate units, have an internal coil of cable and an unspool mechanism, so you could stick the hose out the window to get an even more efficient unit. Or just make it dual hose unit. You could even make it a single hose with one inside the other with just a bit of insulation between the two so you're not exchanging heat between intake and exhaust. Would probably require a bit more energy usage for higher air pressures, but would probably outweigh the efficiency gained by not sucking in outside air to the space from it being a single hose unit.

Edit: Hey Zack... apparently you forgot to show us the most important feature of this unit for efficiency. Just ONCE I'd like to see one of these "standalone" A/C units have both an intake and exhaust for the condenser coil's airflow. ALL These style devices exhaust the same air you're trying to cool/heat, which causes a pressure differential making the climate controlled space draw in outside air.
