In a musical partnership that would last barely 5 years, Morrissey, Johnny Marr , Andy Rourke & Mike Joyce- THE SMITHS - would forge a body of work that was entirely unique, and defied the norms of their contemporaries. With 70 original songs, Manchester's The Smiths created a poetic post-punk romantic soundtrack for the 1980s. They leaned into sensitive poetry and jangling guitars at a moment when drum machines and synths were king. So why did this incredible band break up, right at the peak of their powers and popularity? In this video we delve into the early creative influences of Morrissey and Johnny Marr, their meeting, the prolific career of The Smiths, and what brought everything crashing down.

Of the copious letters that Morrissey wrote to the music papers when he was young, one became unintentionally hilarious: in response to their cover of Bowie's "John I'm Only Dancing" he said that if the Polecats had any imagination, they would shoot themselves. Polecats guitarist Boz Boorer later became Morrissey's longest-running collaborator and musical director.

@@user-lo5qm5tu8m Yep, and I'll do you one better. It was Moz's voice fed thru an Eventide harmonizer which pitched his vocal up to sound like the female soul singers of his favorite 50s and 60s songs. Credited on the album as "backing vocals by Ann Coates" which is a cheeky reference to an area of the Smiths hometown of Manchester called Ancoats.

@@rocdocsI'm getting into the Morrissey albums like Your Arsenal and Bona Drag albums these days. I'll be ordering those cds tomorrow and get the others as well later. I'm a Smiths fan but during Morrissey early years, I got into the Rave Techno genre(89-92) . I didn't appreciate Moz even though my friend Joey was so idolizing him. Now I'm liking and appreciating those records.

Infact I did all the opposite: with my rock band we used to take the p1ss on vegans ... my point of view was: if you like meat eat it, don't pretend you don't want to! I never liked meat and so I stopped eating it. Simple as that!
