These are great value, especially if you don’t have gaming in mind and want something like a low power nas or other network device. I bought a 5070 with i3 9100, the wattage draw on idle is silly low like 8 watts which is ideal for stuff that’s on 24/7

Great vid. I've been buying these Optiplex machines for a few years now, always second hand, and they're great for pretty much everything - even gaming. I have a 7050MT, upgraded the original 240W PSU to an original platinum rated Dell 360 Watts PSU of the same size, added 32GB DDR4 RAM, i7 7700 and an RX 570 right now, but will upgrade to an Nvidia Rtx A2000 (75 Watts) or 3050 (115 Watts, 6 Pin) in the future when prices go down. The upgraded PSU has a 6 pin power connector, and these proprietary power supplies are usually of really high quality. Tbh, I'm shocked by how modern pc gamers nowadays are totally ok with 500-1000 Watt pc systems, which I find crazy from a power usage and thermal point of view. Anyway, Optiplex = Cheap, super performant, reliable, runs great with Ubuntu Linux, great for gaming.
@Erikcleric

Gamers today are not "totally ok" with power needs and usage going up more and more. I dont think anyone is. I certainly am not. But as games get more demanding/complex and GPU's getting stronger, what can you do, you gotta adapt to it. I certainly hope more low TDP cards will be the norm and more power efficient cards overall but im not an engineer or an electrician, i cant really stand behind what i think. But honestly, i think it's a mixed bag, at times we got middle range cards that are way more power efficient than their counterparts a decade ago but i wont deny that i find 4090's 450W TDP to be ludicrous, ive never been excited about the Ultra-tier cards anyway since there is so little difference, gain between gaming at high or ultra settings.
@andystech101
@andystech101 Жыл бұрын
Yes totally agree, it’s all got a bit silly on the highend for such a small percentage of gamers, I mean you only have to look at the steam hardware survey to see what people actually want! I think the GTX1650 is the most common used gpu with 3090/4090s not even in the 1%. I mean I sell gaming PC’s for a living and my best market is £350/£400 with £1000 builds sitting on the shelf for weeks on end. Really appreciate the comment and i’m glad i’m not alone 😎

That’s an interesting PSU upgrade! I’ll have to do a little research on that as it would make a lot of sense. I think I’ve managed to get a 1660super to run undervolted with the total system power draw at 190/200w but that’s still a little close for me so we’ll see in time if the PSU last 😅
@Alexander-ix2jp
@Alexander-ix2jp Жыл бұрын
@@Erikcleric Yeah, good point, but tbh, I force myself to stick to the low or reasonabley powered GPU cards completely on purpose. If a game that I want to play doesn't run well on a mid-range card with low to mid tdp, I just don't play it. Don't get me wrong, I have been a gamer all my life and very much enjoy it even today, but I won't break a leg over it anymore. For example, D4 has a monetization strategy that I'm not ok with, so I'm skipping it. New graphic card prices have been super high in recent years, and while everyone else is gladly paying the new standard price, I am still holding onto my old Rx 570, and will upgrade as mentioned above when it's cheap enough to do so second hand. If everything else fails I can still get myself a console where price / performance / optimization / stability / power usage is well balanced and meant to last at least a decade. So all in all, imo we always have choice, the question therefore is; where do you draw the line?
@Erikcleric

@@andystech101 Those steam surveys, well i dont think the stuff most commonly used is always what people want. it seems to be now what they afford. :) The mid high tier, like 3050,3060, those decent 1440p cards, those im sure people definitely want and did get, i got a 3060ti. But i noticed that alot of todays young gamers or emerging pc builders seem to have no money whatsoever, they seem to scramble to get any sort of rig, even refurbed workstations. I think honestly they dont save enough cash. or maybe its the sign they just dont got a job? But yeah, apart from that, the craze for the ULTRA tier is nuts, its stupid, its a chase that never ends.

I'm happy with my DELL SFF 7070. It has an i5-8500 CPU, 32 GB ram, Samsung NVMe 980 PRO 500GB, 1T HDD, and an AMD Radeon RX 6400 graphics card. I have the 1T HDD physically disabled, but it still contains the basic Win11 installation. So if the overall Win11 OS on the Samsung NVMe 980 PRO crashed big time, I can have the computer up and going again in just a few minutes by switching on over the Win11 OS on the HDD. The HDD is normally disconnected, all to prevent it too from being possibly corrupted. The computer did not come with a case fan, but fortunately it has some smarts, and so if the GPU is getting hot, the CPU fan also increases speed and thus acts like a case fan blowing hot air out the back of the case. So when I tested just the GPU, while in the process leaving the CPU at about a low 37 degrees celsius, as soon as the GPU got hot, the CPU fan kicked into higher speeds to keep the inside case air at the best minimum temperature, and do so even though the CPU itself was still cool. The Cinebench R23 results were 5,747 pts.

@@andystech101 Giving it the full GPU test, the max GPU temperature in my DELL 7070 rig is 81 degrees Celsius. As I said, the DELL 7070 does not come with a case fan. But I did add one even though there were no further fan sockets on the MOBO. I purchased a slow quiet fan for the case, and connected that to the CPU Fan socket, but did so with a fan splitter cable. The other side of the splitter is connected to the CPU fan, but with the RPM sensor disconnected. This sped up the CPU fan a bit, and of course got a little more case air flow going. Meanwhile, under normal use, everything is still quiet enough not to be heard, and the GPU fan is off most of the time, which is what happens whenever the GPU temp is below 60 degrees Celsius.

Haha for the price you can just buy another one! Tbh these are pretty reliable units and spares are easy to come by on eBay etc. I’ve seen bare bones with no cpu, ram, storage etc go for as little as £30 so that’s cheap for a spare PSU and mobo 🤩 in perspective a new H310 motherboard is about £60 at the moment.
